While the M1A1 does use the German 120mm smoothbore main gun, the M1IP used the British/US hybrid M68A1 105mm rifled main gun and we most certainly fired sabots with great effectiveness. One correctly pronounces the word "sabot" as: sa•BO. It is the root of the abstract noun "sabotage" (sa•bo•TAHZH), from the practice of workers going on strike to protest poor pay, then inserting one's shoe (the sole made of hardwood) into the gearing of factory machinery to disrupt a manufacturing process.

Yeah and ninety-nine percent of it is incorrect of course. There's no explosives in those shells they're not made of tungsten they don't fracture as they go through they don't blow up with a cone-shaped explosion. They're made from depleted uranium which is spent nuclear fuel and it's four times heavier than tungsten, the reason for the sabo is to get super high velocity no other reason. And when depleted uranium hits the air it starts blaming when it hits armor it melts a hole through the tank. Nothing blows up nothing fragments from the arrow. What kills the men inside the tank is the f****** s*** of molten metal spraying all over everyone. And this is how a tungsten shell works I'm not talking about any other kind before somebody brings up world War II solid steel shot or something stupid like that.

Look at the moment where he explains sabot, the animation in the background shows a rifled barrel, that cant be apfsds, anyone with a little bit of understanding this matter will know that an APFSDS is fired out of a smooth gun because the rifiling itruduces tooo much friction. Later he says that "it has fins at the back for flight stability" wich is correct, so i dont get why he showd us a rifled barrel. The rail gun "fires" APFSDS rounds. The sabot is there to catch the electromagnetic charge, instead of the chemical propellant, but the concept is almost identical, little uranium spear = hard to throw, so wrap it in something while accelerating, fins for accuracy after. 🤷‍♂️

That depends on the material. The Depleted Uranium alloys is unlike anything Tungsten alloys can do. The DU sabots actually self-sharpens as pieces break off upon penetration, and hitting additional layers/materials (especially the new US segmented DU sabot round). *Against armour at/near its penetration limit,* the DU sabot works more like the cutting action of a HEAT warhead. Rather than on pure kinetic energy overmatch capability, like old school AP and the new Explosively Formed Penetrators.

The word sabot is pronounced " say-bo". APFSDS is an acroynm for Armor Piercing Fin Stabalized Discarding Sabot. It requires a smoothbore gun on the tank rather than a rifled one to fire. It generally replaced the prevous type of primary ammo to knock out armored vebicles, the High Explosive Squash Head "HESH". That type of ammo used explosve force rather than penetration to do damage, and is not as good against displacing/reactive armor. The good thing about hesh is that it doesn't require those rare heavy metals that apfsds does. And can also be fired out of a rifled tank bore.
@TheByQQ
@TheByQQ 8 ай бұрын
HESH was mostly used by British tanks, others used HEAT
@shadow9774
@shadow9774 8 ай бұрын
@TheByQQ HESH was designed by the Brittish during WWII. During that time the US used solid shot and HEAT. The US used HESH during the cold War and is still used by the US for the destruction of structures by the Abrams. For AP applications, the APFSDS is used. The Brittish use a rifled tank bore, so they can't use APFSDS. Instead, they stick to HESH primarily.

This is my favorite ammo type in War Thunder, it penetrates any rank as long as you hit the weak spot. These things aren’t going to magically penetrate any tank you shoot at, you need to hit the tanks weak spot to get the kill

We used the depleted uranium rounds when I was part of Abrams tank battalion in the Army. These types of round are effective against thick armor even with reactive blast plate on exterior. The uranium did a much better job of "self sharpening" compared to tungsten as it drilled into thick armor spraying the interior with molten radioactive metal into the crew compartment from a range of 2-4 miles away.

When these things penetrate a tank, those inside the tank are liquefied due to the pressure, when the round exits the vehicle, anything inside is sucked through the hole.

It's a tungsten or depleted uranium dart projectile encased in a wad if one can call it that and is used like any standard main gun tank munition the velocity of these rounds is so great they can hit moving helicopters if aimed properly obviously they negate deflecting on slanted armour at greater distances aswell well rounded but you need to hit vital components on the enemy tank

Depleted uranium does not "work" by being hard and dense. It works by having a low specific heat capacity which means that the deformation caused by impact partially converts the uranium to plasma, allowing it to melt it's way through the target.

Ummm I dont think thats how it works ? DU is a very dense metal, which is why its both used as protection plates/armor and for ammunition, since it can store a lot of energy. DU is also self-sharpening (not literally but it maintains a sharp-like pointed end unlike other metals) which helps penetrating the armor, it also tends to break into shrapnel more than other metals too iirc.

yeah, first it discards the sabot, then it's stabilized by fins, then it pierces armor. so basically backwards from the description.

This is closer to a dart that an arrow as it dose not flex or spin (at least modern ones dont) also the diagram is pretty old and features a soft matal ring around the sabbot but modern tanks are smooth bore meaning that there is no need for that ring as its meant to interact with the rifling of the barrle and make it spin

Little known fact: when a sabot round goes through a tank making that hole, everything in that tank that isn't bolted down or strapped down gets sucked out through that 6 - 8 in. diameter hole.

USA have depleted uranium rounds because it can "self sharpen" for increased armor penetration compared to tungsten rounds. EU NATO tank can have have larger/stronger main guns; but, USA Abrams uses a more deadly round that needs less power to kill at the same or higher rate. USA doesn't care about radioactive ground/water poisoning since all round fired are going to be on foreign soil.

@mrgold3591
@mrgold3591 4 ай бұрын
The USA depleted uranium round is self sharpening and it turn molten at contact spraying the interior with debris and white hot metal. Depending on target, the round can sometimes travel out the other end because it is so effective. Similar to getting hit with 12.7mm/.50 cal round in the chest. No need for HEAT.
