After a long 2 year battle with illness my wife is finally back on her feet and helping me tend our avocado grove. We grow all kinds of tropical fruit such as avocado, mango, mamey, sapodilla, caimito, and monstera deliciosa. We had a great day working in the avocado farm!

Thank you Nena. It was a double whammy because she became ill at the same time we were living in a hotel because we'd been burned out of the house. One day everything is normal then a minute later you're saying to yourself dang this is what it feels like to watch your house burn down then a month later we're rushing to the hospital. Anyhow, enough doom and gloom from me 🤣 I always look forward to your comments.

Abe, thanks for the comment. I don't think we mentioned it in any videos. Not that we were trying to hide it or anything...more of a stiff upper lip kind of reaction to the difficulty...we also had a fire displace us from our house for 7 months so she had to spend the first 6 months of her illness in a cramped hotel that we were living in until they fixed the house. The channel and working in the farm served as an escape for us.

Pierre, we will. Covid did damage to her vagus nerve and it took about 20 months for the doctors to discover it and another 4 for the medication to do it's job. I'm not saying the doctors missed anything, rather that it took that long for the medical community to learn the virus caused this kind of damage.

@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. Each variety has a season. The season last about 90 days and we picked them from biggest to smallest. They hit their max size in that season. For example, once my chow cats at 3 pounds they’re pretty much done they’re not gonna grow to four. But if I wait too long, then they’re out of season and they taste sour. For that reason we pick each variety within its designated time of the year.

Hi Tom great video been watching your channel for some time. I need to try your Florida avocados. I’m a hobbyist Avo farmer with about 50 trees in San Jose CA east Foothills and 20 trees at my parents place in Vista North San Diego county. My main question is can anybody in Florida get avocados to produce year round? For us the combination Hass-Reed-Fuerte is unbeatable for year round Harvest. If you add in Lamb and Mexicola Grande you get an even more robust year round harvest. But I’m Super interested in trying what you grow as it is a totally foreign world to me the West Indian race avocados. I grow 18 varieties but mainly the standard production varieties work the best so I stick with them.

Hello Tom, I just bought an avocado tree and I want to plant it inside my raised bed. The raised bed is kinda deep but I’m trying to use the bed for a couple of fruit trees. Will the roots reach the ground if I don’t plant really deep? Thank you
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
Hi Lovie, congratulations on your tree. You'll be fine with the raised bed and you never have to worry about roots, they find their way wherever they wanna go 😝. my only recommendation would be to not overcrowd the trees, they need a lot of space and you don't want them competing for nutrients from the ground.

farmers need to be good in math too huh. How do you measure the size for the avocados that are way up in the sky? What kind of sickness did your wife has if you dont mind me asking ( you dont have to answer if it is too private)? I am glad she feels better now. Farming is labor intensive kind of work, it takes a while to get adjusted.
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
Hi JKBC, we do the bulk of our picking from the bucket of a cherry picker so we can use the tester before we pick...also later in the season just about all the fruit are big enough so you really only use the sizer if one looks small. My wife was one of the people who were hospitalized for Covid. It almost killed her and then the subsequent recover took two years...she'd make progress then regress and go back into the hospital. It's behind her now.

Is there a tool that can help with removing the avocado meat out of the thinner varieties?
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
I usually peel the skin by hand which is not the solution you're looking for. My preferred method is to cut in wedges and eat it right out of the skin. I'm not aware of a tool. Sometimes I'll scrape one out with a small soup spoon.

Oh Whaaaat? Picking schedule? I had no idea that even existed, and you get told what of your OWN fruit you are allowed to pick? That's shocking omg!

Tom, get a fake wicker clothes hamper and put back straps on it, like a backpack. Measure, cut and drop it in the basket over the shoulder and into the basket/ backpack. Please, don’t think I’m trying to be a Monday morning quarterback. I suffer from a bad back, all that bending down would kill me.

Tony, thank you for the suggestion. My goal is to own a cherry picker by this time next year.
@SleepyLizard

Kerri, that's actually to protect us farmers. It keeps immature fruit from going to market. If somebody picked a bunch of Monroe in the summer for example the consumer would be none the wiser but when they bought them and took them home the fruit would never ripen, it just goes sour on the counter. If I or a backyard grower want to pick an avocado and eat it ourselves that's perfectly fine although if you don't adhere to the schedule the fruit would be inedible. The schedule actually tells us when the fruit is ready...as does the size.

Ignorant question--when unripe and very hard they are apparently NOT prone to bruising at all? I cringe a bit seeing them dropped a couple feet into bins or whatever.
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
Bo, they are like billiard balls. You should see how hard they slam down from a cherry picker. The only risk is that you nick the skin of you graze the edge of the bin or if you accidentally dig a chunk out if you swipe it with your fingernail. But yeah they are hard as rock.

@@SleepyLizard Great to know that, I've seen others treat them that way too so figured as much but I'm always so delicate with them no matter what. There is NO WAY I would let the GOVERNMENT tell me when to pick fruit! Even if the advice is GOOD, AND EVEN IF I follow their ADVICE... I STILL reserve the RIGHT to pick fruit any way I want to!
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
It's not regulatory it's scientific. In other words, they test the fruit and the schedule tells us when it's ready. we have many different varieties that ripen at different times of year. without the schedule consumers would be getting fruit in June that will never ripen because it needs to be on the tree until August. This ain't a "don't tread on me" thing. I'm free to pick and eat whatever I want anytime I want but none of us want to be sending September fruit to market in June. 😂

@@SleepyLizard I'd rather consult people who know from real time experience than the USDA, but then I'm pretty much a confederate... But I definitely would want to know all there is to know about the fruit before any of my trees ever come to that point... I have 2 [relatively] large fruited trees, and the rest are common HAAS... My mother likes the strong flavored haas, but I prefer the milder large fruits [no idea what the name of the cultivar is]. I like them large and mild.
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
@@hunnybunnysheavymetalmusic6542 The experts are the ones who put the schedule together. it comes from the growers association which is the farmers ourselves. If you go by their schedule you can't go wrong. The milder large fruits you like are not a particular cultivar per se....theres like 60 or so that are the large green skinned varieties we grow here in florida and each has it's own flavor, texture, and other qualities. there's a lot of variety
