Since Stef mentioned the cover on the Pitot Tube…. If you’ve ever wondered why pilots say “airspeed is alive” early in the take off roll, it’s because you need a certain amount of air flowing into the Pitot (more than taxi speed) before the airspeed indicator works. If the pitot tube is blocked (e.g. because the cover was left on it) you won’t get any reading at all no matter how fast you’re going. So it’s important to confirm early, because a lot of decisions the pilot makes in the next few seconds of the take off depend on having an accurate airspeed indication, but you don't know that the airspeed indicator is working at all until you've started the takeoff roll and gained some speed.

5:21 - I've always called them Pitot covers. Going forward, they will be referred to as "Pitot socks". Actually makes way more sense, and they look like socks. 5:38 - This is a favorite location for CFI's to place colored removable tape over it, to make sure we're paying attention to preflight.

I’d love to know the approximate cost of converting to a glass cockpit like this - $10k? $50k? $100k? A fully-integrated stack like this would be my dream aircraft!
@eugene4981
@eugene4981 Жыл бұрын
You wouldn’t get any change out of $100k. The 10.6in G500 display is $21,545US each, $11,295US each for the GTN650’s, $4,195US for the Gi275. That’s $100kAU straight up plus any other parts like magnometer, adapters etc, then add the labor and wiring looms, easy $150k AU would be my guess

Stef, Do you use a normal computer monitor spray and cleaning cloth for cleaning the displays of the Garmin units or do you use something else which works much better?. How easy is it to update the NAV ARINC databases on the Garmin? Do you use an on-going paid subscription to Garmin or organisations like ARINC or Jeppesen for navigational data & for your iPad app & Garmin glass system?. Does your Garmin setup also allow you to fly in say greater Asia, EU, US & also include their additional databases & approach plates or is that an additional paid subscription?. My only concern of your Garmin glass setup is the battery runtime of your standby instrument & was wondering if Garmin offered additional battery packs. Love the Cirrus range of aircraft but if they had 3 extra features I'd wished they would be: a) Rubber boots on the leading edge instead of de-icing fluid which could deplete if forced to stay above the clouds in known icing conditions b) A compressor to allow limitless flow of pressurised oxygen in the cabin with a standby O2 bottle in case one needs an emergency descent c) They improved the layout of the nose gear as if you were in extreme crosswind it seems possible to damage it due to lateral movement & its perceived inability of the nose gear to swivel

Hi Stefan, love your videos. Am not a pilot but say aviation geek. Fly regularly low cost airlines without displays and would really like to follow my flight. Have been looking at Garmin watches, but not sure that as a passenger they really give you much information. Google Maps and app like flyover too limited with info. Any advice you (or anyone on the channel) can give?

I wonder though how they keep the plane level because gyros will always drift over time. I guess it correlates the GPS movements with the G sensor and slowly susses out the direction of gravity. Because there is no direct way to measure gravity in a vehicle that can accelerate. That might also mean that a loss of GPS will make the gyro drift. Maybe something sloppy can be hacked together with compass data that's good enough. With computerized ATC we wouldn't need to write stuff down on paper or confirm back. Or even talk to ATC at all. And most would be direct. Can the main display should synthetic vision only? remove all the clutter.
