I am really excited to share with you how do early stage startups get their first 10 customers. Now, your first 10 customers may not seem like a lot, but when you’re starting, and you have zero customers, 10 customers is a huge number.
Over the past five years, I’ve worked directly with over one hundred early stage startups CEOs. Some of these CEOs have successfully scaled their startups, while others have struggled to scale.
It’s become clear to me, based on my experience, there are five customer acquisition concepts successful early stage startups master to gain their first ten customers. Then they keep scaling. The fifth concept is crucial because it’s the key to making the other four concepts work.

Hi Brett, It is brief and to the point and from real experience. I like it. One question for you. I have a MVP. I plan to talk to a potential customer. If it is okay, I am willing to give them a few devices for a free trial. The intention is to get feedback from the potential customer through an interview and a trial. I thought that the free trial deal could make the customer more willing to accept the interview request and provide feedbacks. So I wonder your suggestion to start charging customer could mean the startup already passed MVP stage. The product is mature enough and ready for sale? Thanks in advance for your answer.

Hi Phil, Yes, you can give a few devices away for free. This was a strategy we used, and it worked quite well for us. The key in our case was customers needed a lot more than a few devices when they went to production.

For a software or an app, it's not easy to make users to pay but Worth trying.

You're right, Chaofeng. But the point is that you need customers to pay at some point, and you shouldn't shy away from it.

I think if your app is addictive and helpful for people than you just have to make people realise they can't live without it and then it just matter of time.
