It's interesting how difficult finding a good IEM rig is. Still half of the time I see them used is just a singer ripping them out after 5 min of performing.

Keep in mind, it's not just about the IEMs themselves but also the system you use to drive them. If you have a gun of an audio guy who manages your mix beautifully, then you're in luck but that's rarely the case for the vast majority of us. You'll want your own mixer in your rig and you can make that as simple or as complex as necessary. For the smaller gigs, sound guys rarely give you more than two feeds and on some occasions, I have been stuck with just one (what a dick). Nevertheless, if you get at least two feeds, then you can have something like I do: guitars on one channel and bass+vocals on the other channel. Feeding that into my Sennheiser EW300 G3 IEM unit, I can then run my beltpack in Focus mode and control the mix of those two feeds myself. Again, just two feeds isn't ideal but it's a helluva lot better than a single feed and I have yet to play a gig with those two feeds alone being problematic. The point being quality IEMs are one thing but getting the right balance of that audio is what really makes it work or break.

I agree on the driver situation. I just ordered my UE 5’s from Ultimate Ears that are only 2 drivers. After testing their lineup, it honestly made more sense to me to get these than the ones with more drives that were also tuned o specific things. I play guitar and sing, but I want an all around good mix with the IEMS, and having ones with boosted low end for bass players or boosted mids for guitars, vocals just didn’t feel right. Great video, sir.

I know it’s years later but figured I’d try lol. How do you like your UE 5’s? I’m torn between that and UE 7. I play lead guitar for a rock/post hardcore band. Also, did you order yours with the ambient feature?
@nickemacio9794
@nickemacio9794 2 ай бұрын
@@johnlawless2365no worries on the timing! It's actually better now that I can give a solid review. The 5's are definitely for folks that want a balanced mix in their IEM's in a band setting and they are all around amazing for music listening. I personally listen to them almost daily and still hear little production elements in songs that I had missed before and I'm a very critical listener. I had been using Bose QC over ear headphones before (which I thought were great)-I have barely touched my Bose headphones since then except for occasional plane rides-of which the seal of UE's customs is far more than adequate on an airplane. With the 7's or any of the other "specifically tuned" ones, I could see them being beneficial in a live setting if you'd like to hear specific frequencies pop more for your guitar or vocals. However, having tried the 7's specific drivers without the custom molds-they are only great for that-guitarist/vocalist IEM's. For music listening you'd have to use an EQ with a streaming service or whatnot to tame the upper mids. I'd recommend the 5's as most IEM rigs are using one of those digital mixers and you can dial in the frequencies very nicely to still have your guitar/vocals pop. Sure, you could go with a ton more drivers and other companies that are far more expensive, but how good is your hearing really? A triple driver would be awesome with a bass/mids/highs crossover, but I doubt most folks would register the difference (especially musicians with our hearing loss, ha!). It all comes down to taste, but you really can't go wrong with the 5's. My rep even told me a lot of big bands use the 5's because they prefer them over the specifically tuned ones. As far as the $2k model-more drivers=more headroom. However, I feel like that defeats the purpose of using IEM's at lower volume to save our hearing on stage. Happy hunting! Hopefully this was helpful. PS I didn't get the ambient feature as I still feel it's beneficial to have a few mics at the edge of the stage for crowd noise or a talk back mic somewhere near the drummer.

I too prefer the A6T and N8’s after demoing every single 64 audio product like you did. I prefer the discontinued JH audio JH13v1’s tho. They are also a 6 driver pair. Something about 6 drivers for me just works for me. I am a monitor engineer and love having a band choose their IEMs themselves during a IEM demo session. Makes my life easier if the guy who loves bass has the bass heavy pair, etc etc. but when in doubt if I can’t get the band a demo session I order them each a pair of the discontinued JH 13v1’s.

Do these protect your ears as well. I have tinnitus and I'm kind of worried about my guitar in my ear especially when I hit the louder solo channel. I basically have my own floor monitor set louder just for me and use hearos earplugs to protect my hearing. Plus I play dive bars too so there's that lol.

I play acoustic guitar, sing vocals along with a drum machine in bars and restaurants. My guitar tone is very similar to the classic Neil Young MTV Unplugged gig. I have zero experience working with in ears. I'm looking at the ambient Westone AM 30 & the isolating ProX 30 though I'm totally undecided about which would be better for me, meaning isolating VS ambient. I wanna shut out distractions from guys hooting and hollering at the games on the widescreen BUT I don't wanna feel weird and awkward from total isolation OR maybe I do wanna feel strange in this way. I just don't know..??? Could you tell me which would be the better choice? Great video, thank you!!!

Is there an iem that's perfect for listening to music and using it on stage? Part of me wants so badly to believe that my current favorite pair (Seeaudio Yume with the Zeos Render eartips and the BTR5) does so well with my music library, surely it could double as a musician's set? I mean i could hear just about everything in a track even if the technicalities are plain average (i guess things go to crap when a song gets super busy but that's forgivable), but most of the iems for musicians that I've seen have less of that vibrancy in the mids and highs that i prefer to have or they lack the punchy dynamics of bass guitar (I'm a funk-metalhead). The CTM CE110 would be great for drummers and bassists like myself, but the general consensus in youtube reviews is that it wouldn't work both ways because of its tuning.

My band has been using IEMs for years, and using them on the road all summer has been an absolute lifesaver. There were two gigs where we couldn’t use it and my ears were ringing even while wearing erasers. Having a properly mixed signal and having full control over the mix will save your ears and make the gig that much more enjoyable. This was a great video as I am looking into getting custom molds and switching over from generic Shure ears.
