Hey Peeps! Seriously?! How do I have so many patterns for a garment I barely wear? I do think most of these can be tweaked to work for my preferences and I promise to be extra picky if I think about buying a new top pattern. What do you think about my choices?

My thoughts on pattern collecting: Patterns can be the best snapshots of fashion. I have chosen to keep some patterns just because they remind me of what was fashionable when I bought them. Now, there are some patterns that were never really fashionable and I have decided I would never wear them. Those I let go.

I think you need a "Tops to be dressified" category in your collection. That way you have all of those grouped together when you're in the mood to tackle the pattern hacking. It would also make it clearer what you have that you specifically intend to use only as tops. (And that for somebody who doesn't wear tops often, you have a completely reasonable amount of top patterns - whatever that means. 😉) I like the idea of turning tops into dresses because I often see tops I'd love as dress bodices, but nobody makes the corresponding dress. And as sewists, we can fix that! ❤

You'll have so much fun hacking the tops into dresses, and then also being able to wear them under skirts or pinafores, so keep all the ones you love and explore every option that suits your preferred way of dressing 😊

Right before I saw this video I was looking at my dress patterns seeing which ones I was able to make tops out of, it all how you look at them.

You've inspired me! Making tops into dresses is brilliant! I recently went through my patterns and realized that due to my own preferences, I have a lot of similar looking patterns. So, I went through them again and started looking at the pattern details and writing them down. I put all of the ones that look similar together, then noted if I liked the bodice, sleeves, collar, etc on them. I'm going to trace out the different elements of each that I like, and then create a "Frankenstein" pattern envelope for each, with a sketch of the base and variations. My goal for 2024 is to make up each "Frankenstein" iteration. I think I will have over 52 different things I can make out of what will be 4-6 "patterns", and then I can sell the patterns I have. Also, I've been pinning a lot of "add on" collar and cuff options in Pinterest lately. Some of the options I like would easily be made as just collars or cuffs that I could make as plain or embellished as I'd like them to be. Beads, embroidery, or lace insertion would be so simple and easy!❤❤❤

Keeping in mind that you have said that you don't like to sew solids, what about doing the fake top and skirt thing? That would let you do the patterned fabric top and pair it with the solid bottom AND have it be a dress. Also, new emotes:

Some lovely patterns there Sian. Great ideas for adapting the older patterns to newer styles. I have been making a few patterns that came with a 1980 series of sewing magazines that are similar to some more recent patterns and currently working on a 1960 ish pinafore style from my mum’s large stash of older patterns. This dress can be made with lower scooped back which the pattern calls an After six dress! Cocktails 🍸

Top patterns are my go to makes for the most part. I have tons! I've made both the Butterick 6731 and Simplicity 8607 and they are staples in my summer wardrobe. Both made in stripes. I get compliments on them all the time.

6457 top for the dress where you love the skirt but dislike the top. I don't remember the # but hopefully you can understand

I have the Airelle, and I've recently come to the realization that it's just a little too "ingenue" for my personal style, so it's going to be my contribution to an upcoming pattern swap party. I've made the Belcarra, and it's cute and breezy for a hot summer day, but somehow the size I chose fit fine when I made it from muslin, but was an absolute tent with a gaping neck in the rayon crepe I used for the "real" version. (It won't even shrink in the wash--what's up with that?) I just need to hack it apart and adjust it, but I dread alterations.

I like dresses but wear more separates. If you aren’t using it, destash it. Makes more room for fabric!
