I'm still running a Barcus Berry pickup I bought in 1972 or '73 on a student quality acoustic violin. I've been in quite a few very loud shows and have not suffered feedback. I like the extra grunt that digging in creates, as I'm looking for more of an electric guitar sound rather than an amplified acoustic violin sound. On some occasions I also strap a De Armond surface mount pickup to the instrument, and run it through different effects than the Barcus Berry. There's lots of room for experimentation here.

Really a great vidéo dude! I don't anymore play a lot of electric violin (I préfer my Guarneri 🎻 😁😂 !) , but some of your tips works olso for piezzo pickup on an acoustic violin :-). If i had this vidéo 20 Years ago I could have save a lot of Time of research ! But I did the road by myself, did a lot of mistake, and arrived to the same conclusion . Thanks a lot to share all of this content, free, for the new electric violin players ;-) !!

Great advice! Very informative! Just placed an order for your Gewa Novita 3.0! Can't wait to play it! I've been playing Irish Fiddle and I have a couple of nice acoustic fiddles, but as a multi-instrumentalist I am so ready to explore and expand! Thank You! Subbed!

I just got my Fortevio feather from the evs(thanks for the handwritten note!) And this video is a real golden nugget 😍 It's a bit challenging at the moment but I already got some good tones out of it. My first try was a Fender fv1 years ago 😂 took me some times to consider playing electric again 😂

My physics teacher brought in a violin during my senior yr in high school hooked it up,to an oscilloscope to demonstrate asynchronous waves. I thin I’m remembering that right? Anyway I always thought it would be cool to play violin since I tried it then. ❤

In my experience, people love talking about their gear. If you're curious what a given artist uses, shoot them a note. They'll almost always tell you.

Wow. An electric violin that sounded good! Waaay too many players--sometimes fantastic players that are icons of mine--seem to have the "oh well whatever it's just an electric violin, so what do you expect?". And they literally do zero to their violin tone plugged in. One of my favorite players recorded an entire album (back in the 90s) by plugging his new solid body electric straight into the board at the studio and did absolutely nothing to it! Of course, it sounds like a bumble bee with a pituitary problem. I'm like, "dude!".

Thanks for the video, it's great! A little bit off, but I bought my first electric because it became hard to find practice time during the day, so now I'm practicing on my electric 6 sometimes 7 days a week. Maybe I'm wrong, but my acoustic after a week without playing sounds worst than before, something is missing from the sound. I know, that I have to play on a violin to keep it in shape, but I thought it needs years to lose its tone. Any recommendation? I'm not sure that I'm right, maybe I just have to traint my ears back to the acoustic one? Thanks for the answer

Great video Matt, one of your best. Thing I don't get (as I'm sure I'm not alone) is how a number like 90kΩ defines an impedance mismatch. Don't we need two numbers that don't match each other? And does that 90kΩ represent the output of the violin or the input of the amp or pedal?
@ElectricViolinShop
@ElectricViolinShop 4 ай бұрын
So an electric violin is going to have an impedance in the 1-10 mega ohm region. 90 kilo ohm impedance on what you're plugging into would be a tremendous mismatch.

@@ElectricViolinShopthanks for the clarification. I guess you are assuming the signal source is piezoelectric. So my magnetic EV can plug straight into a Fender Twin Reverb no problem.

nobody out there going directly to the board through some of the 'big' preamp/fx units like the kemper or axefx? it'd be interesting to see some of their signal chains, especially the IR's they choose. Though honestly said if you start playing around and use your computer through whatever asio box you got available it's a pretty cheap way to play around with effects, getting somewhere is a whole different matter though hahah.

So, should you check the manuel on your electric violin to see if the impedence match the impedence on your pre-amp?! How does that work?! does the impedence on your pre-amp have to be the same or higher?!
@ElectricViolinShop
@ElectricViolinShop Жыл бұрын
Most electric violins don't come with a manual. If you have a passive electric violin (no battery), just assume the impedance is over 1 MOhm. If it's active (it has a battery), it's considerably less. As always, just trust your ears. Your audience doesn't have a meter or anything. They can just hear what it sounds like.

Higher impedance seems to knock the sound down a couple of octaves 😮
@matthew.wilson
@matthew.wilson Жыл бұрын
It's funny how we hear it like that, isn't it? But it's not changing the pitch at all, it's just that lower frequencies don't punch through an impedance mismatch and so you're left with only the higher harmonics and none of the original body of the sound - you're essentially adding a filter that cuts out any lower frequencies.

I'm researching about 7 string violin. But what string should I use?? Sensicore is almost out of stock I can't find one selling. So I thought option1. using octave violin string which is rare than option2. Option2. using cello string or something maybe flatwound guitar string. Is it possible to do these things??
