I guess important to mention, that for most people the 'practice' is enough (for physiological benefits). The actual state will spontaneously occur (in stages) when you finally let go of attachment to an outcome beyond the practice.

So true ...we don't do meditation, we become meditation. By defining the focus of the breath in the morning, I find the unconscious breathing becomes conscious , then everything else unfolds from there... after all, this is what we do 24/7 💞

The part you said about living morally and truthfully can't be emphasized enough especially in this day and age. It's been my experience that unless one has cleaned up their lives on all levels and makes true, consistent and proper effort with sustained enthusiasm in their spiritual practice and sitting, one will not deepen their samadhi and enter the jhanas...but with the right conditions and foundations set up, (such as proper sila) and consistent practice of stillness(sitting in silence) samadhi can naturally deepen and one can enter the jhanas because we're finally allowing ourselves too...

Nice. thank you. With meditation...it is usually not one size fits all. For example in Vedanta we have 21 methods divided in 4 main parts: Concentration methods, Observation methods, Contemplative methods, and Devotional methods. Some people are stronger and/or weaker in these 4 methods. Jai!

Thank you, Sifu. When cultivating the posture, is it correct to make the alignment of the spine the object of meditation? Or would it be more correct to focus on stillness first and allow releasing to bring the spine into better and better alignment?

Thank you Sifu Adam for these additional insights on meditation. I've been practicing your basic teachings as best I can with my nomadic life style and personal development stage. The question I have is regarding focusing thought and suppressing thought. I noticed that although you mention about thought suppression as a skill, it doesn't seem to be one of your steps and instead focus thought is towards the beginning. Can you clarify? Should one practice thought suppression progressively as an exercise or perhaps that's unnecessary if the steps you teach are followed? I'd like to know the what and why if possible. Thank you for your teachings Sifu 🙏

@Discover Taiji Thank you so much for your teaching and this video! The object that I am most drawn to and have affection is the subtle body/felt sense of beingness/or another way I can describe it is visceral aliveness. It's hard to describe in words. Do you believe this is an "object" that can be used for absorption to then enter Jhana? Thank you so much 🙏

If you could practice with other people as much as you want, with the right enviroment of peace and silence, wouldnt it be enought fulfilling? Maybe you would only sit down just to rest and enjoy watching others practice? I spend a lot of time sitting in the floor, but never focus on the breath. Instead i write, and that makes my thoughts something pleasant to live with. I also draw and do a lot of grip work while sitting, but focus on the breath, never. I just never saw the point of doing it.

If you want to use your own idiosyncratic definition for 'meditation' as a teacher, that's fine. But if you're going to equate it with how the pali suttas use the term 'jhāna', then you're way off base here. In the suttas, the four jhānas are heightened states of mind that have singular focus, active processes that are totally compatible and can be done concurrently with taiji quan. They most certainly are not frozen states of stupor that result from mental "development".
@DiscoverTaiji
@DiscoverTaiji 3 жыл бұрын
Certainly not stupor. Still, I don't agree with your view on this. best to you
@Tjsr111
@Tjsr111 3 жыл бұрын
@@DiscoverTaiji , you don't have to agree, but as a member of civilized society, it's best to stick with conventional meanings of words whenever possible. 'Meditation' is a vague enough word that it's reasonable for you to say, "in my system, this is how I'm defining 'meditation'." But 'jhāna' in the pali buddhist suttas has a well defined incontrovertible meaning. The way you've interpreted 'jhana' in some of the videos I've seen, it's much closer to Ajahn Brahm's [erroneous] redefinition of jhāna, which is based on Late Theravada and visuddhimagga's redefinition of 'jhana'. Take a look at how the 4 jhanas work in MN 111 and AN 9.36, just to name 2 prominent suttas where it's obvious Ajahn Brahm's frozen jhana absolutely has no resemblance to the Buddha's definition of 4 jhanas. If your perception of body disappears, you're no longer in the 4 jhanas. If you proceed from that formless attainment and go into a frozen state absorbed on a kasina, where perception of time has stopped, one has no volition until after that predetermined state ends, that's not the four jhanas, at least not how the Buddha taught in the suttas. If you are going to use Visuddhimagga's redefinition of jhana, you should state clearly that's the definition of jhana you're referring to, but understand if you do that, you're going to confuse Buddhists who take the early Buddhist suttas as the authoritative definition of 'jhana'.

@@Tjsr111 My early training was in the same tradition, and some under Ajahn Brahm in those days, so there you go. What is important is that any student understands what their teacher is referring to when using any given term. Thanks for your input.

I recently read something quite engaging, that the "mind is the hand caught in a pickle jar and the thoughts are the pickle. Release the thought, slip free. So hard irl though" as the "monkey mind" just loves the taste of rightious indignation.

To cultivate an affection towards the object is the hardest thing. Thats why buddhists developed their own cult, cult of Buddha. They love Buddha and consiquently they love what he did - sitting with crossed legs and focusing on the breathing. There is no dhyana without a religion, without a bhakti.
