Hi Lars, You have a very calm presentation style ;-) I'm looking for a sub for my Dynaudio Confidence C1 (first generation) bookshelf speakers and the Sub 6 with the presets really appeals. I just wanted to check the compatibility with my Octave 70se amp. Looking at the Octave manual it's rather basic on connecting a sub on the rear panel connections. Am I correct in concluding that one plugs into the preamp sockets with left and right RCA's? Should I use "so called" dedicate subwoofer cables?

Hello, thanks for your questions! Regarding your first one, the answer is yes! Regarding your second, there is in principle no difference between a standard RCA cable and a “subwoofer” cable. However, it is important that the cable has good shielding, which you can expect from a cable labelled as a “subwoofer” cable, whereas a standard stereo cable might not be. Also, some “subwoofer” cables have a separate ground connector, which may or may not be a benefit. You could argue that some cable manufacturers would make different design decisions based on improving high-frequency response, which would obviously not be relevant. Sometimes it is the same cable, just packaged differently. In short, as long as the signal cable has good shielding, whether it is in fact labelled as a “subwoofer” cable is less important. Hope this helps :)

I have Sub 6, connected to McIntosh MA252 amp via a dedicated sub mono output. However, in this case, there's no crossover engaged on the main speakers (Special Forty in my case). Am I getting full potential from the subwoofer?

The short answer is yes. I took a quick look in the manual for the MA252, and it states that the subwoofer output is full range. In other words, it is just a summed version of a stereo pre-out. This type of setup is exactly what the presets in the Sub 6 is designed for. When you select the Special Forty preset in the Sub 6, it inserts a filter to align with the roll-off of the speakers,. You still need to check the phase setting (which will vary depending on the placement of the subwoofer), as well as adjust the volume control. The only way to improve the integration between subwoofer and speaker would be to significantly change your setup, to provide a crossover option before the amplifier, which may or may not be a compromise in other areas. /Otto, Dynaudio Academy

Great explanation. However, I'm still not sure how to seperate the frequencies so that the lows go to the subwoofer and the higher freq go to the main speakers? It's for a rock band using a desk, 2 main speakers and 2 subs. Do I need to buy a crossover device to separate the signal?

The Dynaudio 18s subwoofer for example has a menu where you dial in the fow end frequency of your other speakers and you plug in those speakers into the sub, so it basically takes care of who gets what.

Yes you will need a speaker DSP system of some kind. You don't need to spend half a home on it, but you need something with a proper selection of crossover slopes and time alignment. If on a budget, get the DBX DriveRack PA2 If you tell me what speakers you have, I can probably give you a starting point in terms of settings. Getting a basic setup is not hard, it just takes a bit of patience.

Thanks for the answers to questions which were quite basic tbh. Here is a more specific one. I am very happy with my Heritage Specials in my 24 sqm living room. But, of course, there's always the suspicion of the sound getting better with a sub. So I have been looking at the Sub 6, the 18 and the KEF kc62. A big selling point for the 18 would be if I could use the Sub 6 firmware. Is that possible? Or is there at least a selectable speaker on the 18 which matches the HS? Thanks for you advise 😊

Hi Lars. It is not possible to use the Sub 6 firmware for the 18S. The 18S is meant for use with our studio monitors only. Regarding the questions being basic - we are all in different stages of knowledge. Feel free to feed any questions into the Ask The Expert channel, and we will do our best to answer as much as possible. Better questions make better answers 🙂

I'm in the same position now to add a sub to my HS. What did you end up with? And how is the result?

@@CedricRachmad I experimented with a Monitor Audio sub just for a day... and decided a sub is not needed 😁 It might be possible to dial in a better sub to support the sound quality of the HS but I believe it takes quite a while to do so without muddying the bass.

@@CedricRachmad Actually, the first thing I did, was buying a UMIK microphone to figure out the actual frequency situation in the room. It turned out that I had/have a pretty big mode in the 40 Hz region. Surprisingly, it got much better by counterintuitivley moving the speakers "towards" the wall. It also told me that without any kind of room correction I would have a hard time to get the sub tuned it right. My setup currently does not allow a high pass / low pass filter - so, a sub would have to go on the preout of the integrated amp. The chance to get that room mode ironed out in this situation is pretty slim. Now, my plan is to first change my setup to include a Minidsp - but that opens a whole can of worms 😂 Good luck with your quest 🍀

@@larssteckenA fellow tipped me to look at Acourate by Audiovero....according to him it is the best out there beating Dirac and a like. I think you don't need hardware other then a mic for the measurements. You create convolution filters which you can use with Roon or other EQ software. But not sure. THey offer a lot of packages which is quite confusing.

One thing I will never understand is why manufactures of subwoofers do such a poor job of emphasizing the importance of stereo subs. The excuse is always that you can't hear the placement. Sure, maybe not below 30 hz, but from 40 hz and up, a single sub is incredibly noticeable and difficult to integrate unless your room is abnormally devoid of room modes and the sub is placed between the speakers and far enough back to account for time alignment.
Analogue vs digital crossovers, which one is better?
