How Do I Tell Who Sent An Email?

☀️ It's extremely unlikely. I'll walk you through why that is and one way you might get lucky.
☀️ Who sent that email?
Identifying the real sender of an email, including their name, location, or phone number, is highly unlikely without the help of law enforcement. Any information you can access can easily be faked. Some data is protected for everyone’s privacy, making it nearly impossible for the average person to trace the true origin of an email.

Even with a court order for an ISP to turn over information, that might fall short if the ISP is not in your country.

I used to receive spoof e-mails from E-Bay, PayPal, and Amazon; I quickly learned I could identify a spoof e-mail by opening up the headers and examining the Received headers, tracing back to the origin. While this would not tell me who actually sent the e-mail, it would tell me who DIDN'T send it. Not surprisingly, some of the IP addresses were in Russia.

Time they made email accounts that are only given out to verified users, using a verified ID & that will only accept emails from other verified accounts. Anonymity fuels criminality.

There of course comes the next question of verified by *who*. You can secure emails by signing or even encrypting them with either S/MIME or PGP, but you have to have a way to verify the public key of the other party. So it just works between peer groups that trust each other and have a way to communicate their keys in private. If you roll it out to a broader audience it would lead to the same problems that https has for the web, that it might be spoofed when of of the thousands of certificate authority becomes compromised or is bribed. And then there is of course the possibility of an entire "parallel" e-mail network. In Germany for example there is de-mail, which is a way to send certified legally binding documents between parties electronically that participate in it, that was created as part of an EU directive. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De-Mail But that never really took of. Most businesses just use normal emails, which works 99.99% of the time, and when there is a problem they fall back to a certified letter in the paper mail.

@@askleonotenboom can you do a video about how best to give safe and secure access to one’s family in the event of one’s demise? I really worry about personal stuff not being found or accessible if it’s all online or on ones laptop or phone.. I had a pension co try to force me to register online for all my statements and correspondence- but I’d rather communicate by post both to have a physical trail (if I’m not around) and to limit the risk of scamming which is more likely if all comms are online. Thoughts welcome? Thanks

When I get a suspicious email, I click "View source" and look for some plain text that I can recognize in the body of the message. If there is no text that I'm interested in, I delete the email without opening it.

The IP could give you geolocation info. For example if the header had the ip address of the sender, some do. I can tell what town they are from. Now if they are using a VPN, for example. That kills that.

Not at all reliable. My IP shows me as being about 50 miles from where I actually am. Completely different town.

@@askleonotenboom didn't say it was too your house. And besides depends on whose geo location service you ask. Sometimes Comcast shows I'm Denver, where they are headquarted. Other times Atlanta. I think where one of their NOCs is at. Then others will get real close.

The From: line can be spoofed, and even left blank. It's meaningless when it comes to spam.

So, why not post a sample IP address on the screen and point out that the numbers show do not have any correlation to a physical address.

Gmail has a setting where you can set the email address in the from: field to whatever you want. It’s not even a secret , it’s right there in the settings.

Not quite. Gmail requires access to the account in order to send from the account. What I'm talking about requires nothing at all.

Dislike. Guess you heard of the email headers? It is TRUE that you can show whatever you want in the FROM field, but it is also true that ALL e-mail services will NOT send emails without authenticating the sending user. So, the email headers would have the Id of the sender! Of course that you can make your own rogue mail server, but you STILL need the TRUST of the multiple SMTP email servers that would route or receive such email!

"...but it is also true that ALL e-mail services will NOT send emails without authenticating the sending user." You wrote that it is true, on the internet, so it has to be true. By the way... the Earth is flat. EVERYONE knows that. Note that since capitalized "EVERYONE", then that makes it even more true.

Email headers are useless in most cases of spam these days, since they;re generally being sent by a botnet distributed across thousands of compromised machines. Tells you nothing about the real origin.

@@askleonotenboomLet's be honest: SMTP goes back about 50 years and the "S" stands for simple. The concept of "spam" didn't exist in these days so it's not part of the protocol. Someone mentioned it above as well but it urgently needs a serious upgrade. And there will run into some serious problems. Upgrading the protocol is one thing but to implement it on billions (?) of mail servers and clients is quite a challenge. You can't do it all at once so you'll have hybrid "backward compatible" versions at least for a decade or so. So you said it all in the first few seconds: "You can't"
