It's also worth mentioning that the zones don't apply to busses, these are just a flat rate. You can also catch two busses for the price of one if you change within one hour.

That pretty much sums it up. Excellent explanation - as always. I was born in what is now Zone 4 and grew up in Zone 5. That said, any visitor to London, with enough time, should check out the outer Zones. Also, check out the rest of the UK, money and time allowing.

I commented this a few days ago but I think it got deleted for some reason: I thought it would be awesome if you could do a video talking about the Overground, how it works, and how it differs from The Tube. My sister and I ran into trouble when we were in London for study abroad last year because we weren't aware of how the Zones worked as far as if you leave London you need to buy a ticket, you can't just use your Oyster card. Seems so obvious now, but I feel like it's something people might overlook if they don't know how the system works. As always, thank you for what you do & for all of the fab info Jess xx

Hi, Your previous video about the Oyster Card was just great. I`ve been to London 2 weeks ago, and the daily limit workes just fine. :) However, I wondered, why you (or any "Tips for London"-youtuber) mentioned, that the older 5-Pond-Notes will no longer be accepted next month. (I, personally, preffered the older ones, since a) they were the first I got in my hands, and b) they look way better, than the newer ones.
@CuriousPavel
@CuriousPavel 7 жыл бұрын
I agree, Benjamin. The old ones really do look better. But that is like every other new thing- you just get used to it. You do not have a choice. If you have an old banknote just dont look at it for a month and you will forget about it ;) as to not accepting- I do not think this will happen just like that. They will start taking them out of currency little (I think).

I preferred using my Amex card - as long as your card is in pounds (not Euros or dollars, for example) it’s exactly the same price (or cheaper, if you hit the weekly cap!), but I still get a student discount until next April, and you can only get that on Oyster cards not contactless.
@marebear875

I don't know if you've done one of these already, but I think it'd be cool to make a video talking about the Overground and how that differs/works. When my sister and I were on our study abroad semester last year we ran into some trouble with it because we weren't aware of how the zones work and that you need to buy tickets for traveling out of London on the train. We were lucky that we didn't get fined and everyone was very helpful and understanding, but we did feel a little silly. I feel like it's something that can be overlooked or confusing for people not used to how the system works. We didn't think about it because we'd traveled into Waterloo from Barnes and we could use our Oyster cards for that since it was all still within in London so we just didn't think about going from Barnes station (our station) to somewhere outside London (we went to Guilford). I hope that all makes sense lol Basically if you haven't already I'd love to see a video talking about the Overground system. As always, thanks for all your fabulous info Jess 😊

I think I remember, in another video, you said the Oyster Card has a daily cap on the fares it will charge. Am I remembering this correctly, and does the cap apply if I travel through several zones?
@loveandlondon

Yes if you pay with Oyster or contactless card the daily cap applies, and the more zones you travel through, the higher the cap

A London-based rail fan has at least 1 video where he taps in on certain platforms so the system recognizes that he’s not traveling through Zone 1, and therefore is charged less. Perhaps some clarification on that would be helpful.

It's not super common to run into for tourists but it's pretty easy, there are signs telling you when you need to do that, but it's never when changing from tube to tube.

Anyway, in NYC, luckily there are no Zones, the Subway takes us everywhere at one price. Amazing how the London Tubes charge for Zones.
@jas88cam
@jas88cam 6 жыл бұрын
No, “double tapping” is if you touch in/out twice, which upsets the system (it looks as if you might be sharing your card, letting two people through the barrier on one), which triggers a penalty fare! As Jess says, it doesn’t matter which bit of the card you touch with - it’s done by short range radio, the system can’t even tell how you’re holding the card!

Ok, here's a question I can't get my head around: Let's say I start the day in Zone 3 (Tottenham Hale) and find a bus that takes me to zone 2 (Finsbury Park). There I get on the underground and stay in Zone 1+2 the rest of the day...not returning to zone 3 at all. Would it give me the peak of Zones 1/2 or 1-3 for that day?? Since buses are not counted as Zones and I am using an Oyster Card, would my Oyster card still "notice" that I started in Zone 3?
@loveandlondon
@loveandlondon 5 жыл бұрын
Buses aren't part of the zones so you're right, it's zone 1+2 for the day. You got it!
