Modern nuclear submarines are a pinnacle of weapon systems engineering. And their most powerful weapon is stealth. So what makes them hard to find? What ways are there to make them very quiet? Watch and find out!

Really good overview of the history of stealth technology in submarines. What I'm curious about now, though, is how important a little less sound is. What sort of ranges would we expect a Victor sub at 400m depth to be detected vs. a Thresher sub at 400m with an approximately typical passive sonar detector? If they almost always can't detect you to begin with, a 10% power reduction might not be worth it to be more quiet and vice versa.

What makes subs silent? Sean Connery, of course. His thick Russian highlander accent cancels out most of the noise from the propellers.

Sad that the modern diesels never got mentioned. Older diesels had limitations which are limited speed underwater & loud as hell when snorkeling or surfaced to recharge batteries, but modern diesels with AIP propulsion systems (e.g. the Swedish Gotland & German 212A) with Stirling & Fuel cell technology allowed higher & longer submerged running speed yet being even more quiet they nuclear counterparts.

How a modern naval battle between two superpowers would be fought today? With all the new long range tecnology of today I can't understand how and engagement could be: the average distance between the fleets, most important weapon systems used, average fleet composition and so on. I think a video about this could be very informative.

constant stalemates. both sides would launch anti ship missiles that would get intercepted immediately by naval sam and submarines would get lost tryna stay undetected and forget to attack. Eventually admirals would rock paper scissors it and go home.

What do submarines do after a nuclear war? If there is no higher chain of command, do they just surface and find somewhere to hunker down, or do they have an order in place for that scenario?

The Sock Puppet has joined the silent service, I live just about 30 min drive from the U.S Navy's Sub School. New London, CT, the ship yard there has been building and sending submarines to sea for a good 100 years now. Kidding aside Binkov you present excellent work. With the Sub's what to do actually know about them, there is a whole lot that remains unknown to us arm chair admirals. and for good reason, never mind to keep our eye out on our Soviet-Russian friends, we wired the Ocean for sound when that came out, I just shook my head, I would have never thought of that!

So glad this scenario is coming. Pretty much know what the outcome is, but would like to see what surprises India may invoke since their last encounter with the Chinese. India has no chance of being the aggressor, but they have a much more and secretive defense system than may be perceived. This should be good.

I think Alfas operated regularly down to 800-900m and some dived even to 1200m 688s were limited to 250m due to thiner steel..necesary to keep weight under control..in theory they could dive to 300 with crush arround 400 but usually 250 was the limit.. that fact was not well known until late 90s

A small correction about cavitation. It isn't waterless voids. Cavitation is caused by an area of low pressure forming on the leading edge of the screw's blade, which in turn causes water to boil in this low pressure area. These bubbles of water vapor quickly collapse, and the collapse is what creates the noise.

Would an even number of powertrains tuned to similar frequencies cancel out the noise enough? If the oscillations were similar enough and tuned to be one cycle different then the sounds would destructively interfere, but I don't think the sounds of the engines could be tuned to be similar enough.

what about german submarines? some wikipedia article The German Type 212 class, also Italian Todaro class,[7] is a highly advanced design of non-nuclear submarine developed by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG (HDW) for the German and Italian navies. It features diesel propulsion and an additional air-independent propulsion (AIP) system using Siemens proton exchange membrane (PEM) compressed hydrogen fuel cells. The submarines can operate at high speed on diesel power or switch to the AIP system for silent slow cruising, staying submerged for up to three weeks without surfacing and with little exhaust heat. The system is also said to be vibration-free, extremely quiet and virtually undetectable.
