Started at age 58. Just wanted to carry a knife. Did a little research and got a Rat 1 in aus8 and figured that was that. Well, five years later, 120+ knives, 18k+ spent, here I am. Am at the point where I'm starting to look at entry level customs. Family and friends are bewildered by it. I blame KZfaq. But I love it.

At the age 62, I needed a knee replacement(titanium) but I had a costly Havana cigar addiction. I also needed to give up cigars to get the operation. I found a cure - An 7A Emerson folder that gave me something to do with my hands. Quite soon my wife observed that I had a new addiction. As you correctly observed, there is only one way to go - up. Today I am into Medford and Chavez knives and any knife that catches my eye. I live in SoCal where the cutlery shops are rare and screwball plentiful. By the age of 79 I learned basic sharpening and honing techniques along with a great hobby. Today I'm waiting for my Chavez Sangre. While I employ careful carry, I will not replace the skull clip. I really enjoyed this video.

I've recently evolved my addiction to sharpening. It took a similar trajectory to knives. Started out with a pull through. Garbage. Got a fixed angle with 2 stones from Wal-Mart. Better but not great. Upgraded to hand sharpening on a stone that costs more than a lot of my knives. Cool but I wanted one of those mirror polished custom edges. Had to get an expensive fixed angle system plus stones to use. Its a sickness. A beautiful, mirror edged, shaving sharp sickness.

I got into it around 7, with a orange camo, buck back lock. Around 9, I hit my, “that’s amazing” phase and bought a few low quality, but not quite mall ninja knives at a gun show. After that, I didn’t buy anything, except for one, glorious tool, I will never give up. The exact same Batman, dual bladed, hot mess you had. I was on amazon and started laughing when I saw it, and figured “this is hilarious, I need it”. Now, I like to think I’ve gotten better in my buying. I bought a para 3 lightweight, and recently bought a kershaw launch 1. My wishlist is quickly out pacing my budget. I’m currently 14 btw.

Just like you mentioned, I got my first pocket knife (swiss army knife) when I was in Cub Scouts, and have always had a fascination and love for pocket knives. Only recently have I had a bit of disposable income now that I'm wrapping up schooling, and I purchased a plain S30V Para 3 thinking that'd be all I need for an EDC knife. Now, just a few months later I'm starting to go down the rabbit hole😂

How it was for me? I’ve always like knives. But I never gave them any thought. I just used whatever. Well I landed myself in prison for 11 years. 11 years of a deprived life. I believe it turned me ocd in many ways. I’m now ocd about everything. It was bicycles, woodwork, and disc golf. Then I ended up with a Tenacious as I was trying to spend a free $15 Amazon credit. Now many thousands of dollars later I’m obsessed with knives. I think a drug habit would be cheaper. Lol. I’ve never had a drug habit but it HAS to be better than the hundreds of hours a month I spend thinking of knives and watching KZfaq videos on knives. It’s like a damn disease.

Ive often contemplated why we start are kids off on cheap slip joints. After some thought I don't think there is a better choice. For a couple reasons 1. The blades tend to dull pretty fast, so hopefully by the time carelessness sets in its not going to do to much damage. 2. Even with a dull blade, they tend to have thin enough blade stock to be useful 3. Slip joint will help build safe cutting habits that will last a life time 4. Cheaper steel is great to learn how to maintain your knife. Gives good fast feed back when sharpening, I mean you know if your not doing something right pretty fast and can adjust accordingly. Plus there's a good chance it won't be stainless, so you have to learn to properly clean your knife after use

Great storytelling! I can hear the little boy, and teenage personas coming out in your descriptions of the knives. Very fun to listen to! Funny enough, I was introduced to the knife hobby sideways. My boss gave me a Spyderco Southard to open all the boxes for gear we needed. Told me "knives don't get much better than that". I said.. yeah okay and opened some boxes. He showed me a Chris Reeves sabenza to demonstrate where the lock mechanism came from. Etc.... Now I'm watching through all of your videos, Nick Shabazz, some others to catch up. The first knife I thought was really cool was the Jerry Moen Mongoose. That got me looking into knives. Didn't buy one though lol. Ordered a Herman Ishtar 61 though for my christmas present. Very excited!

Wow, my early progression was nearly the same. I had several slip joints, SAKs and backlock knives as a kid. I also had my fair share of ridiculous blades as a teenager. Kershaw, Buck and SOG were my go-to brands for years when it came to camping knives. Then I bought a Benchmade and it completely changed my standards for knives. Odd twist though, I've come full circle and have recently become obsessed with traditional slipjoints, particularly collecting GEC knives. I think my GECs now make up nearly 50% of my knife collection. I didn't see that one coming, but it's been a fun journey.

I’m 14, starting to get into knives, I live in the US. But my first knife I bought in Switzerland, I remember looking at the Spyderco knives and thinking, oh those look ugly, and ended up buying some random brand knife that fell apart after a couple months of hard work, now I look back and I want a Spyderco. But here I am with about 15 knives and a new Smith & Wesson OTF on the way. I remember every time we went to tractor supply when I was young and looking at the knife cases wishing I had them. I would even “borrow” my parents pocket knives for an extended amount of time to just look at them and be fascinated by the designs when I was younger. Started getting into steels and it sucked me in. All I can say is I’m glad to be here. And there is no turning back.

I grew up in a very violent area of Los Angeles California and I carried knives as long as I can remember. Literally probably around 5 years old on. I've had a knife and or gun on me every day since (26 now). I had always seen them as defensive weapons made to stick people. Now as an adult who has guns and lives in a very safe place, I have begun seeing the artistic side of knives. I genuinely see them now as tools and frankly art you can carry. your channel and knife guys like you really changed all that for me. So thanks man Anyway that's my story. Thanks for reading of ya did. Take care.

got a gerber folding knife for my 10th birthday. my grandpas almost always had a knife with them. so I was around knives as a kid, nothing high end, but I liked them. that first Gerber knife the pocket clip broke on it and I stoped carrying a knife for awhile until I bought a 5 dollar crappy thrift store flipper knife. sometime after that I somehow got sucked into the world of EDC gear and knives on youtube, and OMG I am completely addicted. my first "real" knife was the bug out and that really hooked me and now I'm seriously think about spending 300$ on a knife. that is something I never thought I would do, but I know who to blame. as a small modest knife enthusiast thats mostly just collected whatever my dad gave me for my birthdays, im also a master barber of 30yrs exp & with u speaking of "price" ill just say, it would blow peoples minds to know what a professional barber will/can spend on a quality shear (or scissors as theyre commonly referred to) with japanese sourced steel being in the upper echelon ...for example, a pair of mitsutanis can run ya between $1,500 & $3,000 range ...but at the sallys corner beauty supply store u can get the equivalent of the gas station knife... usually in some sorta rainbow colors & made outta cheap steel thats not go na hold an edge... but the "goldie locks zone" is usually within the $300 to $500 buck range... & in that range, cared for properly, they can last ur entire career ...ive got a pair of centrix that ive had for 30 years & a pair of my fathers barber series jowel shears that are even older than that, & still cut like they were brand new... so it just kinda funny how parallel these worlds run... always enjoy ur videos man, & on these types of videos i always learn something, so thank u sir!

I will say though I still like the 200ish blades as well the spyderco Yojumbo and benchmade super freek are still on my list so ill still find happy in the 200$ knifes but it probably won't be like the experience I had handling my first really expensive knife had the jack about a month and im still in awe of it cant wait to see what the higher tiers have to offer

I've always collected and used knives, but they were always cheap Walmart knives like Gerber and Smith & Wesson and Schrade. It wasn't until I saw the crkt CEO and the civivi elementum that I started opening my eyes to the different possibilities of what is out there. Since then, I have been completely hooked, probably buying anywhere from 1 to 5 knives per week and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon😂😂 and channels like metal complex and Neeves knives have been so invaluable and informative and I don't think that this journey would be even half as fun without them and the amazing knife community.

Funny, I just didn't worry about knifes. I had a cheap boy scout knife when young, but was a PITA to open, I never really used it much. Then my next was a Spyderco Police model when I was at the sheriff dept, and just used those, it was a backup and used quite a bit for everything. Worked great for wiring stuff as well, with the spyderedge was great wire stripper. BTW when they say, don't use your knives for prying they mean it. I was on my 2nd police model after breaking the first one. Fast forward 23ish years and on a vacation with the wife away from the kids, we both went shopping, she was looking at stuff and I went into a knife store, that was a mistake. The most costly vacation ever that hasn't stopped. I jumped pretty quick to the middle of your stack, but I am going the auto route mostly and not folding, there are so many different types of folders. I am right now doing budget folders, but high end autos, getting ready for a custom or two. 👍🤠

I started with the cheap cheap and fantasy knives all my friends were into em and had a bunch of 20$ mall knives 😂 but after a while I came to appreciate good knives when I final got some in my hands, at first I found an Ontario rat knife and I loved that thing then I got a Emerson style knife can’t remember what it was but after that I was hooked but at this point I was young no job and in school so I was just fantasizing all over KZfaq just buying stuff like the lightning otf but I finally chose to go big or quit so I chose my favorite type ‘otf’ and I just went for the best and it landed me on a microtech ultratech I had just impulsively spent pretty much a whole check on it but man that’s what did it for me now I’m 1500$ deep but I wouldn’t have it any other way, I do not regret the knives I’ve picked cause over the years of just checking every brand and every KZfaqr with knive reviews I fully knew what I was asking for and they just go above and beyond expectations. Long story short, do your research and know what you would want. Start low $ then jump with both feet and if it’s not what you were hoping for then this world isn’t for you

I had the money to spend at the same time that Demko dropped a bunch of the excess stock from Blade Show 2024. I just happened upon it too. I had no idea that there was a drop. They made a lot of them this time because KnifeJoy had them in stock for several days. All the colors sold out in the first 24 hours except the camo and tan. They might still have a few of those.

How about a video where you talk and explain about the differences between the types of locks and styles of knives, like assisted, slip joint, etc. A lot of this still sounds like a foreign language to me. My journey didn't go as I thought it would. For 20 years I just carried a SAK or my Gerber multitool. Couple years ago I kinda discovered high end knives when I took a job selling knives. And I dove in head-first. Got a bunch of leathermans and a Vic multitool, and a bunch of keychain tools. The mini grip was my first real nice knife, and I learned how nice it was having a one-handed knife. Spent about $1500 in rapid-fire, got lots of classics like a couple elementums, a couple bugouts, some spydercos, a north fork, picked up some rare goodies like solid silver Uiygur knives, etc. Got a couple of them customized like a para 3 LW with an acid stonewashed blade and bronzed hardware that's just gorgeous. Then I decided to try out a BM 940-1 to see what all the fuss was about... And my collecting ended. That was it. That's the knife I carried ever since and I never bought another knife. I guess I was never a collector in the first place. I was just looking for MY knife.

I still have knives from when i started collecting like the esee 5 that is just a beast of a knife that I have no need for but is just too fun to ever sell. Our collections tell stories no doubt

You described my journey exactly, except i only stuck with the fantasy stuff for half a year. I'm still a teenager so i haven't made it much farther than zt and spyderco but within the next few years i hope to own an arius or a whippersnapper.

Awesome video. Seeing First Blood. As a kid the Jimmy Lile Rambo knife was the coolest knife I had ever seen! SOG, Benchmade, and Cold Steel were cool brands when I was a kid. I’ve collected pocket knives for over 30 years and I’m still addicted to collecting pocket knives. It’s amazing how new and fresh the hobby feels with the amazing blade shapes and exotic materials being used today. My two favorite makers today are Todd Begg, and Kirby Lambert. Knife collecting is an awesome hobby. Thank you for an outstanding video!

“If you gain control of your obsession”. Loved that line. Very well put. I can totally relate to that as well as the rest of this video. Very well done. I loved all 34:10 of it. Great job. It made me laugh out loud several times.

I started with Boy Scouts, having a couples of knives similar to the first one in your lineup here I'd buy at camp shops and cut twine and whittle with. I stayed in the two lower-tiers for a while, until I got a SOG Trident in desert camo for Christmas one year and managed to replace the mall ninja phase with the tactical camo phase. Nowadays, I've got tiers of folders and fixies all over the place. As I write this, I'm waiting for an XM-24 to arrive in the mail. Definitely approaching solid collection territory nowadays.

My collection has honestly gotten out of hand since the pandemic hit. Too much free time without much else to do besides watch videos on knives that I don’t need, and one thing leads to another.

Odd how you forgot about the infamous CRK phase. The “if your a real collector you have to have a Sebenza of some sort” I am on my 3rd one and I still don’t get it. I have been collecting and using for 7 years. I am sure in its time it was the best of the best but now there is a lot out there that rivals it in a much lower price range. I am down to about 50 knives that range from $75 all the way to $450. As you said in the beginning I started collecting with a K bar Dozier moved up to Kershaw and my first over $100 knife was a Kaiser SLT. It has been a roller coaster ride but at this point I have become a steel snob because I do my own sharpening so I am no longer interested in budget knives. At one point I had over 200 knives And I am looking to reduce the number I have now to 30 or below And move up in price to stuff like the AD20 And Arius. The roller coaster continues but it’s a lot of fun.

I walked the same path and also settled back to that $400-$600ish mark. I am definitely more comfortable with my purchases in that area for what you get for what you spent, and you don't price yourself out of being able to flip it easily when I'm ready to get something new. I have gotten myself to an overall investment in my knives and typically stay around that amount and usually something new means something sold. I think that "holy trinity" arena is the all around best value of the hobby.

I remember being interested in knifes ever since i was little and started with piece of crap knives& wallhangers like that dragon knife in this video, knowing nothing about quality brands or steels or anything. But over the years ive researched and knowledge&collection has expanded quite a lot. Same with other of my fun hobbies like gemstones, games, insects, airguns

Followed the same path in the beginning, except I had an extra step - cheap fixed blades (aka Rambo knife) added in there while I was a kid. Over the last couple years I’ve progressed to the bench made/spyderco/zt area and just set up camp. While I love the looks and reviews of hinderer/Chris reeves.... I will just probably never go there. With our financial situation... That’s just a no-go zone. I could save for a couple months... but I just don’t really want more expensive knives. I’m fine sticking in the 150-300 range.

My first knife is a swiss army type slipjoint multitool. Then yeah, like fantasy knife and imagining im kind of an ancient warrior and escalates to tactical knives but wasnt really durable at all. Then i started to watch DocP91b and metal complex and thats when i was starting to educate my self with the knife world. Here in the Philippines, high end durable knives are very rare but i managed to have a few. Thanks for this vid. Such nostalgia.

I spent most of my teens in the slipjoint/lockback phase. Then in sophomore year I somehow jumped from a standard Link in 420 to a Blur in S30V to a Bugout I spent $60 customizing. Now I've been eying a couple ZT's. Your progression is spot on

Is so nice to hear I'm not the only one who has all the same justifications & questions as to why & I too am far past any rational explanation. I enjoyed it so much that I think I'm going to reward myself with a new "tool" & you will be pleased to know you have inspired me . For me, I always had one knife. It was about “it’s a tool” . Then I got a good knife. So started look at nicer knifes. To me it’s about am I willing to use the knife as a tool. This has slowed my progression. I will top out with a couple of ZT’s. But to meet my sweet spot the bulk of my knifes will live in the 100 to 140 price range. As I want to be comfortable using it. All my folding knifes are from 4 companies.

I blame my uncle for giving me my Kershaw Leek (Model 1660 Silver Snap On Edition in 14C28N) 10 years ago. A couple years ago I got one in carbon fiber and CPM154... Now I have a 3V Black DLC Demko AD20.5, titanium scales, and a backspacer in my cart... The slope is potentially YEARS long, but one way or another you're headed down. I couldn't be happier.

I can relate somewhat. my first knife at 8 years old was a slipjoint (a victorinox). At 13 years, I got a $15 chinese buck knife from Walmart, and started carrying it. Then, I wanted something a little higher quality but cooler, so I got a $30 black tanto assisted Kershaw. Now, at 15, after breaking the spring on the Kershaw, I currently carry a standard Benchmade Griptilian, currently my most expensive knife.

I'm late to the party here. But since so many others have, I'll share my journey as well. My dad gave me my first knife at 10. It was a Case lockback, about 5 inches overall. He was always buying new cheap knives, $10-$20 because he sucked at sharpening and refused to admit it to anyone, I'm currently trying to learn this skill better than I already am. I was also a Boy Scout, so I had to have a swiss army knife, well in my case it was a Camillus because it had the BSA emblem and endorsement. I hated that knife and quickly got a Victorinox which was way better. I knew nothing about knife steels and am trying to learn that better as well. Then for the next 27ish years my Victorinox knives served me well. Then I decided to go down to a single Victorinox, the Pioneer X Alox. Man I loved that one. But I lost it somewhere and no clue where... After I lost it, I purchased a Kershaw Cryo 2 and thought it was great. I retired it last summer when I got a Civivi Ortis and got hooked hard on Civivi. I did learn quite a bit over the next few months. Just a few weeks ago I purchased a Hogue RSK mini, and I absolutely love it to pieces. I don't see the point of me moving further up the food chain as I am quite content here.

I was just born a weirdo. Ever since I was a small child I was obsessed with knives and folding knives in particular. Back then I didn’t even know about dedicated folders, so I was into Swiss army knives. There was no process of discovery or adjacent interests such as guns or bushcrafting. There was no flashpoint such as reaching a certain age or getting a certain knife as a gift. It’s just been as long as I can remember.

Excellent video. I can recognize myself in some parts, I skipped the fantasy stuff though and I stopped somewhere in the middle, going horizontally from there instead of further upwards, having many really good knives from a lot of brands and in many different designs but non that costs more than 200$. I did the same thing with photo stuff (apart from some Leicas) some years ago. With cameras and lenses it‘s pretty much the same development, just that each item is five times as expensive: entry lenses 125$ instead of 25, good ones 250 instead of 50 and the elite versions 3000 instead of 600. It‘s nice that knives are less expensive, so I can collect even more of them compared to lenses. ;)

I really appreciate your videos, idk why but before I saw your video that was live, when you drank the hot sauce, I thought you would be a geeky looking dude with black hair and just looked like he is all just about knives and nothing else. But you’re actually just a normal looking guy that has an interest in knives. I don’t know if this makes sense but I really appreciate you and your vid’s. I currently own the Spyderco PM2 and BM Infidel, Kershaw Lucha, Launch 11 and BM 176BK Dagger. Looking into the BM Bugout, Spydie Para3 probably in Maxamet due to watching your vids, and possibly a Microtech OTF. Thanks for all you do.

If you was never that kid that loved pocket knifes, Rambo knifes lol you'll never understand... still remember my mom taking us to Academy to get shoes and clothes back in the 80's and everytime I'd go right to the knifes got my first survival knife there thought it was the best thing ever!! God help me when i find that one hobby that goes endlessly down the rabbit hole though lol
