This doesnt actually explain anything eg. Transference is often falling in love with a therapist. What does this tell the therapist.

What do you think of the idea of "reverse-projection?" For example, someone says something about themself, like "wow, I'm an idiot, but they subconsciously have that perception about another person in the room. I randomly thought of that.

That might be more along the lines of reaction formation, where a consciously formed impulse is generated against the unconscious one. "You are an idiot" is forbidden and is then countered with "You are smart" and translated verbally as "I am dumb."
