Solar Superstorms is a major new production that takes viewers into the tangle of magnetic fields and superhot plasma that vent the Sun’s rage in dramatic flares, violent solar tornadoes, and the largest eruptions in the solar system: Coronal Mass Ejections. What’s driving these strange phenomena? How will they affect planet Earth? Find the answers as we venture into the seething interior of our star.

Not really. Humanity can't comprehend how unbelievably insignificant it really is, and how small of a time we will be around in this Universe. By the time we go extinct (which will happen MUCH sooner than we think) and the Universe dies from entropy, we'll have only been around for 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of the Universe's existence. We seriously don't matter. And no, that percentage isn't an exaggeration. Even if we are around for a billion years, that's nothing but a fart in the wind to the Universe...

Better documentary than most on the complexities of solar storms, concentrating on coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Better might've been to create a primer for people to understand when they hear on the news about the oft reported or talked about "solar flare" eruption, as they are different events than CMEs, and the size of one doesn't always correspond with the size of the other. The large CME from the 2012 solar storm, as the documentary somewhat glanced over, occurred during a period of heightened sun activity but wasn't precipitated by a major flare, but rather a strong M-class one on that day (if one at all, this seems somewhat debated). This is an important distinction as the media could misrepresent the power of a solar storm based on its flare class, as M-class flares occur somewhat often but can still precipitate catastrophic CMEs. Likewise, because of several factors, a major X-class flare does not inherently mean a major geomagnetic storm will hit earth. The X-28+ flare from November 4, 2003, for example, bombarded earth with x-rays and fast protons, but because of the storm's location on the western limb of the sun and the slower movement of plasma clouds, the associated CME mostly missed earth.
@bodombeastmode
@bodombeastmode 6 жыл бұрын
Ed McMurty Yeah, flares can cause damage to satalites mostly, but CME's are the true danger. They often happen together, but as you said not always. We are going to be hit by a bad one eventually and will be without electricity for months if not years. It will be a cataclysm of proportions we haven't seen since the black death.

@ilovespore
@ilovespore 2 жыл бұрын
thing about cme's is there is a very narrow target window for them to actually effect us. Just recently we were hit back to back but levels low enough to barely affect the northern lights. Most satellites will go into protection mode and they will be fine for most of the cme's. Our detection and space weather prediction has greatly improved over last few years. Even our power/energy infrastructure can be shut down to protect it from CME's. This day and time and political climate, I am more concerned with a purposeful EMP that would cripple us.. But that is just my opinion. Now this is for the typical cme. Carrington event level cme's are another story. Even with them, with enough notice using SOHO, Hinode (Sunrise /SolarB) and the other solar space observatories we will have some notice. Roll of the dice really....

Excellent explanations, for thoses looking to understand how the sun works. With Earth's own magnetic fields weakening it's more important now than ever. I'm afraid of what's to come to our way of life when we are stuck by another Carrington because of this. I wish the press would cover it more. Everyone needs this information and should a certain level of preparation. If a CME is powerful enough we could literally lose power for years.

More like "take technology" from us. Unless you meant the boiling of all Earth's oceans and the end of all life on Earth in 0.85 to 1 billion years due to the Sun's increasing brightness. I imagine this could be averted via a huge array of space mirrors (assuming we survive that long), but I don't think anything could be done about the subsequent transformation of the Sun into a red giant. Theoretically both the Earth and Mars could be gradually pulled into a wider orbit to be "parked" right before Jupiter where they should be safe - at least until the Sun sheds its outer layers and turns into a white dwarf and everything freezes :)

If the Sun is a ball of gas how can it have a core? some days the sun is lighter and in other days its darker how come? And no one knows what the inside of the sun looks like only because it's too hot to get even near... these questions are actually from my granddaughter LOL she's 10 years old I just happy that she's asking questions about science

I'm surprised you got this ootage from the iss, of the norther lights, I downloaded the space station app, I noticed every time it gets near to the aurora they cut the feed, every single time, it's definitly deliberate, I wonder why they don't want us to see what they see

Question: If the electricity from grid was shut off, (outside shut off switch) would it burn the electrical lines in the home. If an electrical generator in the home that can generate solar power, can it be ruined by an electrical storm, and if so , is there a way to protect it so that it will not happen?

From my knowledge of solar activity/mechanisms,we are more prone to a carrington event more than ever in recorded history. Observations of the smoothed sunspot numbers are the lowest for a long long time. And these events are more likely to happen on the uptake of sunspots part of the cycle. Time to build Faraday Cages for our electronic equipment! And with a stroke of luck,take out the human monitoring starlink system. Five jee linked. VK X XXX,radio ham.
