Who Are We?
We are starting Empowerment Church on the Westbank of New Orleans with the hopes that members of this community can find their people, develop their potential, and discover their purpose.
Growing up, my home wasn’t always the most stable place in the world. My siblings and I were definitely loved by our parents, but their marriage was always “on the rocks,” which meant that home a lot of times was very unstable. The one place that always provided consistency, comfort, and dependability was our church. Even to this day, my life-long friendships are with the other people who were in my youth group. That church is where we found our people.
We did things like TNT, which stood for “teen ‘n talent,” where we would sing, dance, rap, mime, and do poetry. We had a “quiz bowl” style competition called “Bible Bowl” where we studied a book of the Bible (my favorite was Acts). The church became a place of stability and exploration in a safe and secure environment. That church is where we developed our potential.
My sister (Tamara Jade) won first place at TNT singing. She recently finished in the top 9 on NBC’s The Voice. I always did really well at Bible Bowl. The study habits that I employed to learn the Bible for Bible Bowl are the same ones that I used to finish near the top of my college class with a major in Chemistry. It also sparked a life-long love of the Word that has led me to the place where I am today. That church was the place where we found our purpose.
Every step of the way, we had people cheering us on. People who made a lasting impact on my life were right there at that church. We believe that Empowerment Church can be that place for this community, and we believe that you can be one of those people that has a positive impact on someone else’s life.
