I watch all these wood workers use festool and Laguna and all these fancy machines and this guy comes and transports us to medieval Europe. Love the channel

I literally just picked up what looks to be the exact same draw knife yesterday! I’ve been a woodworker for a long time, but never really used hand tools like this much. And then today, this video shows up in my feed. I’m now super excited to try it, as I most definitely would have first tried it upside down. Thanks!

When I was In High School, our wood shop had a Drawknife made from an old plainer knife with rebar welded to each end for handles. It worked, but not well...

So you’re saying, I’ve been using a draw knife wrong on the last three projects. Thank you I now own one of each style that you showed in your video in two different lengths. Now I know how to use them properly.

Have you used the Scandinavian style draw knife that have two bevels? Curious what you think of those and their inline handles.

While I don't really like the modern style of many hand tools just mentioning a DIN standard they're made by but it's impossible to find out what that DIN standard actually means, I do have to admit that it's still a huge upgrade to whatever wild west tools used to be 😅
@robertdavis1714 ай бұрын
I guess I always held the draw knife wrong so the bevel was up. Slightly uncomfortable, but it worked well at my shaving horse that I patterned after your plans.

It's all about the *handle*
@Hellsong894 ай бұрын
Yeah cool, but what do you actually use it on shop. Debarking is clear one, but on projects the use seems bit limited, considering tools available.

I have one that was my dad’s from decades ago. I didn’t even know what it was called until just now! What is the typical use for them?

What are the differences between the bevel-down draw knife and the bevel-up draw knife? Serious question, in which situation would you use one over the other? I'm assuming that one is curved for a reason but I'm more than a noob at this. Sorry if it's a dumb question.

Or even a thick leather apron is better than nothing
@nicmasterdude4 ай бұрын
An apron or some other stop can't hurt, but draw knives are inherently very safe. You are much more likely to be cut if you let go with one hand than you ever are by using them correctly. The body mechanics of using a draw knife make it very difficult to bring the blade all the way to your body. Essentially your arms will hit your ribs before the blade ever does. And if you are trying to muscle through things too much, it's time to sharpen, take smaller bites, or both!

What's a little bit of engineering you could get the handles to rotate slightly, independently of the blade.
