why not just directly checking the second part of the byte? Anyways we only consider the last bit if its 0 or 1

On example 5 you showed the MAC address represented as 1111.1111.1111… but this is not accurate because the binary represention of FF is a total of 8 numbers. Your example is either wrong or confusing. So many bad teachers out there.
