My baby’s name is also Luna. I think we have to say goodbye to her today. She’s only almost three years old but had to suffer through 2 surgeries in just one week. After the second surgery, we thought she would be fine, but she started bleeding profusely again. I don’t want her to suffer any longer. This is the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make.

@@elsamanaloto it is horrible. It’s as if there is a feeling of guilt, along with the terrible sadness. Very few people seem to fully understand it. They are our companions, we do a lot of things with them, and we love them. It helped me to talk about it.

Had to say goodbye to my little guy only a few hours ago....he was the best, loving, funny dog ever. A little king charles cavalier who lived to about 13 1/2 years old and I'm grateful for all of the happy memories he gave us and that we've had together. We all knew it was going to be difficult to say goodbye but giving him peace and a path away from his suffering at the end brought some peace to the moment. Remember, pets may only be a part of our lives but to them, we're their whole lives. Be with them when it matters most.

I’m so so sorry. I truly feel your pain as I said good bye to my 17 yr old baby in august. I don’t have human kids so she truly was like my child. It’s so surreal isn’t it? I’m lucky as I’m 43 and never dealt with loss like this. I hope you’re hanging in there and trying to focus on all of the amazing memories you had with your sweet Bella. That’s all we can do. I still cry almost every day but because of the love and joy my fur baby brought to my life, I will eventually adopt another pup, maybe even a senior who is overlooked at the shelter. Maybe eventually you’ll feel ready to do the same but until then just take good care of yourself so you can be a doggie mom again one day💜

Another important piece of advice is to try your best to not show emotion until the pet has passed. They react to your emotions and the calmer you are the calmer they will be as they pass on. I know this can be difficult, however, we should try our best to at least limit our distress as mush as possible during the procedure for the benefit of our pet.

I had a senior cat (16), and the vet recommended we put her down at 15, but a year later she was still going... She was very weak, but always happy because I was there. Then one night it all went downhill. She slumped down, and just waited to die. I sat with her, giving her pets, but she was just too weak to even purr. Eventually about an hour later I could feel her stop breathing, and it made me so very sad. I pet her some more to ease the realisation that she's gone. I then put her in a box with a towel, took her to the emergency pet care (only place open) and just by walking in with a box and no pet, they could understand what happened. I got to the desk and they said "do you want to cremate her", and I said yes, but I asked them to take out the towels as they were sentimental to me. I now have her ashes in my room, to forever remember her. This was four and a half months ago.

I am dealing with this today. My dog has advanced Cushing Syndrome and his hind leg muscles have atrophied where he can't even stand let alone walk. He looks at me and I struggle not knowing if he is asking me for help or to end this and to let him be free. This is a pain I wish on no one but as sad and as much sorrow as this brings, it doesn't come close to matching the amount of joy and fun Jake and I had through his 12.5 years. The clock is my enemy as I have just over 90 more minutes before I must take him to the vet for this one final appointment. I have been an emotional mess all day and I am going to miss him tremendously.

I am also feeling immense guilt and struggling to make the decision. My 12.5 year old girl still comes on walks with me, still eats, and has sporadic bursts of energy. But she's slowed down a lot in the last couple of months and she was diagnosed with Cushing's disease 2 years ago. She's become very lethargic and she seems confused sometimes. She struggles to stay awake for more than a few minutes when she's comfortably sitting down, and her head is unsteady on her neck. Additionally, she's had extremely frequenty UTIs for the last couple of years, and she had a seizure a month ago. She lost control over her bladder overnight earlier this week. She doesn't have the same spark for life that she used to, and seems depressed. I feel terrible because despite her mounting health issues and 4 medications, she still has the energy and life to do most of her normal activities, though much more slowly and with less energy. I can't help feeling that it's too early, but I spent several hours today closely tuning into her and I got the feeling that it is time. I know that Cushing's is terminal and that she will continue to decline, not improve, over time. Still, I feel absolutely horrible and guilty about it, and I fear I always will.

I had to do this two days ago. I still feel guilty. She was 14 years and 8 months. Her mama died while she was only 5 weeks old. Mine was a very small dog so they aren't weaned as fast as bigger dogs. I had to feed her and a sister with a syringe trying to get them to feed on their own. It was a week or more. The sister was given to a good home. But man, those eyes who completely trusted me brings me guilt. She could barely see with her cataracts but she looked my direction all the time. The whole last year she just wanted yo sleep behind my chair. Her health had declined. But she loved her food. I noticed her stools would sometimes smell like something rotting and she was having accidents. I had to lift her up and down the majority of the time. She no longer sat on my lap or enjoyed being outside. I knew it was time but I'm still heartbroken and feel so guilty.

one of the best advice videos I've seen... been so distracted by letting our cat go a week ago, watched videos before and after... but a key piece of info is in this video: you are the decider, and that will make you feel guilty, but don't do that as you have taken care of this animal as you have done its whole life. And it is a truth. Still doesn't make it easier, but it is a truth.

Took my 14-year-old Australian Shepard (Standard) for a 1.5-mile walk today, not as long as we have done before since he is no longer able to make those walks we use to bike on and he ran in those days. I had to carry him home on my shoulders (it embarrassed him and he let me know it). He has to be on a leash now (cataracts and hearing loss) and I keep him close, we live in the country. He never lets me out of his sight, forever on watch, guarding the entrance to any room I am in while in the house and if I am working in the yard he sets up a secure perimeter and watches over me, usually with his back towards me and guarding for threats. I know that day will come one day but damm it has been a good run. He does not appear to be in any pain so we are coasting into the Silver Years, both of us. A time of transition for both of us.

This was exactly how I came to the difficult decision yesterday about My cat Maggie she was thirteen years old and had renal kidney failure and when I woke up yesterday I had no idea that by the time I went to bed lastnight Maggie would be at peace I just somehow knew instinctively that her quality of life was going away and she was depressed and probably in pain she tried to be her usual self at time but she slowly was not eating ,grooming socializing etc. and was extremely under weight. I miss her yes but I am relieved she is not suffering and I did not prolong her life for me instead I gave her the gift of no more pain. Thanks for telling us not to feel guilty because I did feeling like she was still quite coherent and still used her cat box but other than this she was not healthy or happy.

Most people wait too long. Sometimes you feel it’s early but it is not. It is also a pocketbook decision. Just the tests and the vet visit can cost many hundreds of dollars with multiple issues. If a bunch of issues at the same time, it’s probably time and forget about the tests because the quality of life with the multiple med side effects wont be good. Finally children don’t get a say in the decision. It is what it is. We do what’s best for the pet, not what the kid wants. Quality of life over quantity.

Thank you for this video. We had a very hard time deciding if our 12 year old German Shepherd Dog should cross the rainbow bridge. She was barely eating for the past two weeks. She lost substantial weight and was quite skinny. Her enthusiasm dropped considerably. She was so tired. We realized it was time to say goodbye before she suffered. It's such a tough decision, but being reaffirmed from others makes it so much more comforting. Again, thank you for the video.

sorry to reopen old wounds but scrolling through comments I saw yours I am in the same boat. My Idefix was diagnosed with neuroblastoma about a year ago and we tried everything. He was operated once and 2 days after he was like a new dog but the tumor regrew after only a month. We did a second surgery and radioteraphy and he was somewhat fine for 5 months but it is back since about two weeks. Right now he cant really use his back legs and pee on his own. Vet gave some steroids that potentially could give him some time but even though he is eating, drinking, I see that he would like to be with me I also see how he is in pain. But the guilt is killing me thinking it is to early because he has good moments but he is not walking anymore, his spine is hurting (i can tell when I touch it he makes that pain sounds), but at the same time I dont think that me or him want to see this going even worse in this next weeks...

I was so sure I made the right decision when I put my 18 yo cat down, but now 3 weeks later, I start to doubt myself again. These videos really help me to reassure myself I made the right decision. When I made the decision, it was completely selfless, i did it for her, to end her pain and suffering. I did not consider how much suffering I would experience after her passing (she was my childhood kitty, I grew up with her). I’ve been thinking about her EVERYDAY since she left and I’m in so so much pain. I guess this is why I’m doubting myself again because I can’t live without her 😢😢 (Funny thing I noticed, this vet looks like a blond Jimmy Kimmel 😆)

@@fvnt0miix953 thank you for your kind words. It was actually my dog I had to put to sleep. My sister and I bred our dogs because we both wanted a pup and so did a family member and friends. The mama dog died from cushings disease the pups were 5 weeks old so we had to train them to eat food. (They were little dogs so they take longer to wean than bigger breeds). When she was around 5 years old, I got really sick with an autoimmune condition. My children had just left the home and my husband drove truck over the road, so my dog was my support and companion. There's a lot more about the stuff I went through, but she was always there. I didn't realize how much she was a emotional support animal until she was gone. Now I understand why people have emotional support animals. That being said, 10 days before I had the appointment for my dog, my cat who was 9 died unexpectedly. He was a rescued feral kitty when I got him with an underlying health condition. The vet originally suggested putting him to sleep as a kitty but he pulled through the initial rough spot and treatment. The life expectancy for him was around 5 with that condition but he lived to a little over 9. He played with my dog. They would chase each other around, hide and jump out at each other making me laugh when my dog was younger. Both slept with me and were devoted to me. So I lost 2 pets within 10 days. I was and am going through a rough patch. I want to wait before I get another cat because I don't want to be replacing the one who's gone and expect the same personality. It wouldn't be fair. Thank you again.

@@cathyann6835 Oh gosh, I can’t imagine losing 2 beloved pets in 10 days! You’re definitely going thru a tough time and I totally agree with your decision to not get a pet right away, I think it’s too early as well. I believe the emotional support you received from your dog was mutual, you saved her life and the spiritual connection that you have built together will last forever. You seem like a great loving person with a kind heart and I’m sure you gave both your dog and cat the best you could, so please don’t feel guilty. I know you probably feel like you could’ve done certain things differently, but we can’t change the past no matter how much we would like to, so try to forgive yourself. The first few weeks after loosing my cat were painful, but it was the most beautiful spiritual journey for me. She visited me a lot in my dreams and she even came to tell me she’s okay on the 2nd night after she passed away. It was the most surreal experience, one that I’ll cherish forever ❤️. That night, I saw her sitting there looking at me and then a big pair of hands carried her up gently. Right as she disappeared, I felt a strong and calming energy wave flowing down my body from head to toe, filling every blood vessel. I received 3 messages: I’m safe, don’t cry too much, don’t blame yourself. There was no sound, I guess telepathy would be the best way to describe it. The energy wave was so strong that it paralyzed me, but I also didn’t want to move because how calm it made me feel. When I woke up again a few hours later, that energy was still in my body. Some people can say it’s just a dream, but I’ve never had a “dream” this powerful and detailed. All this to tell you, your babies are in a safe place free from pain and agony now. They are running and playing together in their new home and everything is okay now ❤️

I am absolutely going through it right now. My best friend, my boy who is a Golden retriever mixed with a Pomeranian who we rescued back in February 2012 is not doing so good. Last April he had kidney failure, and he got a dialysis which saved his life then, but that's around the time we found out he has cancer. My boy is at the point where he isn't really going for walks anymore, but he is still drinking water but is not eating that much. I haven't been able to see him in the mornings but in the afternoon and evenings is when I see him, and I spend time with him and that's when he will try to eat a little of food. My mother just told me this evening that I think they are planning on putting him down tomorrow or Wednesday and I have been literally battling with myself telling myself and them that it's too early and he is still fighting and still has some life in him. I keep hoping that my boy can hold off long enough until I get the money that is needed for him to get his surgery to make an attempt to save him from the cancer but that is me just hoping there is a chance that I can save him. I know my parents are probably right that it is time for him to pass the rainbow bridge but I am just not ready for him to go yet. This really is the hardest decision, but I just hope my parents don't do this behind my back and take him to get put down when I am not there because that will really crush me, and the worst part is my Birthday is literally this weekend.

I knew I had to make the decision and it was so hard but I know he was starting to suffer and the vet told me "we can try and do these treatments and it's not going to be comfortable for him but I can't force you one way or the other." I thought about it, I prayed about it, and I got to have one last night with him before I took him in and he and I just bonded and I was so sad but when I took him in I knew it was the right thing to do. I would prolong his life just for MY sake and it wouldn't be right for him. I'm glad you mentioned guilt because I feel guilty knowing there was a treatment on the table to try but putting him through all that wouldn't be a way to live....... he died with dignity. I really do appreciate your kind response. You're right. I was looking through old photos and videos of him and I had not really realized exactly how bad his health had declined these past 6 months. To me, I knew he was losing weight and everything but I would just be optimistic and feed him 3x's a day with the canned food and he was eating the dry food whenever he wanted. Looking at pictures from even 2 years ago, I knew he wasn't the same. I know he was holding on as long as he could as well, but when a cat starts to go hide and he starts to sleep a lot more than usual I know those are the signs of a cat who's sick and dying. I really really miss him and I love him but I know I did him the best thing someone can do for the animal that they love.. the ability to die with dignity and grace. The vet sent me a card saying how sorry they were and I'm going to donate the rest of the cat stuf that I have to them.. I'm sure they can use something from it.

Yeah. It's been a month now and I still think about him a lot. It's hard losing a constant companion. Whenever I'd come home from work he'd be there waiting for me on the stairs right in front of the door or he'd be looking out the window as I went to get the mail first and he'd go greet me... I just miss him so much. Especially late nights like tonight when he and I used to spend a lot of time together. Whenever I see a cat I think about getting another one but I feel like I would just be replacing him and I really don't want to look at this in morbid terms like this but in the end in another 10-15 years I'd have to go through this all over again. I really think he's going ot be the last cat I ever have. I really can't get emotionally attached to another animal and lose them like my little Chaos. I talked to my councillor about it and told him I felt guilty knowing threre was an option on the table and if I did it who knows what may or may not happen but the vet didn't seem to be optomistic about it and he put me in this position of pay this extrodinary amount of money up front and for the rest of his life he'd require treatments but they were not sure what was wrong. First they said it was his kidneys, then they said his liver, then they said he had diabeties... and they were basing it off of a very limited blood panel that I could barely afford and if I did submit to this treatment plan it would be 350 every 2 weeks and once they had the meds straightened out it would be 300 every 6 weeks. I know I couldn't pay that. I was put in an impossible situation.. mmy councillor told me "well there you go, you had no choice... don't put so much pressure or blame on yourself. The vet could have made other payment arrangments or taken your financial situation into consideration for the benefit for the cat's wellbeing but I don't think he saw a good prognosis so you did the right thing by not subjecting your cat to a rigerous round of treatment after treatment just for the sake of holding on." So I am starting to believe that. I still miss him terribly and wish he was here, but that's how life goes..

I talked to a friend about not knowing when I should let him go, and my friend told me I would know when it was time, and he was right. I came home from work last Tuesday and I suddenly felt in my heart that ti was time to let him go, and later that day he let me know I was right, as he looked up at me with his tired eyes almost to tell me it was his time and I had to let him go. I know his soul is finally happy and free again, although I did feel initial guilt, I still know it was the best thing for him. My point being you will know in your heart, and maybe your poor pup will tell you too, when it's the right time, and there will be little doubt.

He slowly couldn't eat dry food only wet and didn't bark anymore. If he ate too much he sometimes threw up and barely went out and was lethargic. When we took him the vet agreed it was best. He wasnt in serious pain yet but his quality of life went downhill in the past month. We felt guilty thinking if there was anything we could do differently. But when we saw what he was doing the past 2 weeks and my wife said he had that look of "I am tired and can't anymore" she knew.

Thank you. It's been nerve-wrecking thinking and deliberating about this for my nineteen-year old tortie with mouth cancer. You bring clarity and comfort to the situation. I appreciate it.

I believe I needed to hear this. Thanks alot. Tomorrow my 14 year old baby boy, will ne put to sleep. This is the hardest decision of my life, your minds constantly asks, is it too early? Does he have more to live but I am deciding to take it way. Our vet said that will be the best decision, as he is having great pain, for one week he cant walk and get out. The worst part is, I am away and my mom tells he cant stand pain any more.. I hope this will be easier by time.. but I will never stop loving him…❤

One of the thing doctors say is of it's possible to stay with your pet.Mostly they know it's time to go and they look for you with there eyes in the office.I bbn promised all my cats that I'll be there holding their paws as they cross over(if I have to make the decicion)..I wanna rock them as I would rock my child and tell them I'll be with them when the pass through the rainbow bridge.

I have to do this tomorrow to my dog of 16 years, and I've tried everything I can think of to keep her as long as possible, but nothing worked. Worst part of owning an animal is saying goodbye

This is the best "when is it time" videos I've seen. I like the questions, is he interacting? Eating?interested in going outside? I keep saying to myself "it's okay for him to be old, he's allowed to be old, I can let him be old, I can take care of him so it's okay" if he loses the interaction, eating, interest or is painful or uncomfortable then yes, it's time.

2:53 My beloved, faithful and trustworthy 15 yr old GS will be euthanized at home 5 days. She needs assistance in getting up, tremendous weakness in her hind legs when trying to walk, & losing bowel control. Had as a 16 week old pup…. She’s given and taught me SO MANY life lessons. I can’t imagine my life without her. Feeling. So. Much. Loss. & Pain.

My cat is 21 years old. Within the past week she is having problems so I am taking her to the vet in a couple of days. She eats, drinks, urinates, etc. Sleeps with me - gives me kitty kisses. My husband dies suddenly last year. She keeps herself clean. All my friends tells me that I am a good cat mommy to her. Which I have to remember I have done everything that I can for her. I will wait and see see what the vet says.

I still feel guilty for putting my dog down. He was diagnosed with lung cancer and the vet was sure it had spread to other parts of his body. However Charlie would still eat in fact he was wanting food all the time, and drinking lots of water. Even though he was eating I could start to feel his bones and knew he wasn't doing well. His breathing was getting worse too. That day on 8/6/18 when he didn't want to go for his walk I knew it was time. What kills me is even that day he was still eating, drinking, and going outside to pee. But I could tell he was in pain and I knew it wasn't fair to keep him suffering. I was with him the whole time and felt him take his last breath. I miss him dearly. I love you Charlie..

It sounds like you did the right thing and relieved his suffering. You have to remember that you have provided so much love and care for your dog throughout its whole life. Try not to let this become the sum total of your feelings about a lifetime with your pet. Celebrate this special animal that shared a part of your life and that you gave so much of yourself too! Wishing you all the best :) - The HCFP Team

Please don't beat yourself up, when you saw your friend unable to do the things he loved to do , you made sure he wouldn't suffer any longer. So people and animals eat right up until the end. Still eating is not the only gauge of being healthy or happy. You did the best thing for your best friend

I hope you have continued to find peace in your decision. Animals are great at hiding that something is wrong and just trying to do their normal routine. Seems more so when diagnosed with a terminal issue, not just dying of old age. It really messes with your head as their caretaker. You did the right thing. Pro-longed suffering in an animal is gut-wrenching to witness and will haunt you longer than the choice you made.

I have a dog with kidney disease, arthritis, incontinence (including fecal at times), some dementia, deaf, that paces back and forth all the time she is awake and that has a random sleeping pattern. Sometimes I have to help her lie down or get up. She can still go for a walk though. What the heck are good days? What are bad days? They're almost indistinguishable. Sometimes I think if we are also not allowing an animal to just be old.
