How do I pick my faction? It’s a gut call based on their narrative I have two 40K armies I’ve played orks since 2nd edition and I started dark angels in 5th edition I chose Orks as after my demo game in my local GW store the staff member showed me the Ork codex and i fell in love with the idea of the shokkattack gun, smasha cannon, tractor cannon and splatter cannon. I knew this was the army for me. For dark angels what made me want to collect them was a short line from a short story within their 5th edition codex. The line was from an interrogator chaplain speaking to a captured fallen. “Fear not brother, for I shall save your soul, even if it costs you your life, I will save your soul” And I was like this is the chapter for me.

I got into space marines in 1998 I used to make fun of the guys at the game store playing with toys. I watched them as I'd walk through to hang out with friends as they played d and d. Lol I fell in love. Got my first tax return of 800, the store manager had an ultramarine army box. I bought the Armageddon codex. I saw the salamanders and I went home built and paintwd 2000 points of salamanders and showed up ready to play. I've been an addict ever since.

for me it was first looks/model range, and a consideration to play style with my low understanding of it. Lore was only learned after and while I was interested it was a non consideration. Opportunity always played a huge role though. I started warhammer with kill team when my friends tried it. randomly picked some necrons as one of groups they didn't have and I enjoyed their asthetic. then when expanding I decided to get eldar in general so I could soup it later when jumping up to full 40k. Immediately decided not to continue harliquin with their tiny model range. Then when I had about 2k craftworld and drukhari and 9th dropped indomitous which ment expanding my necrons kill teams to full army incredibly convenient. I decided to stop collecting craftworld as I didn't have the capacity to collect/paint/play 3 armies. for AoS I kit bashed my durkhari mandrakes using the idoneth/tree revenent method which left me with 2 units of sylvaneth from alternate build. The sylvaneth also sang to me as a gorgous hobby project army that could look good with not a tone of effort a rapid release of deal boxes for them fueled their start when i decided to try out the game. hobby wise it gave an excuse for a "pretty army" change from grimdark future schemes. And now with start of 4th AoS I am jumping on a phenomenal deal of flesh eater courts. I wouldn't call them my favorite asthetic of the system (maybe middle), but I used them to kit bash drukhari so it gives me a minor expansion to that army at the same time.

Dude, I literally just picked up Kruleboyz to try AoS as well because Im not happy with the 40k Game Devs. I got the Dominion box foe $100. Love the aesthetic of the army. Lots of swamp monsters.

It's a shame I couldn't attend this one, I'd have had quite a bit to say. More about AoS than 40K though. So. . . I'll just share the full story anyway. My "first" army ever and what got me into the hobby was Gloomspite Gitz, it was a tossup between them and Skaven, but once I learned how listbuilding Skaven in 2nd edition worked I gave it a hard pass. Their old as dirt models didn't help their case either. My decision at the time was mostly an aesthetic one. I like Goblins and the idea of having an army of tricky little buggers was cool to me, I also liked the Spiderfang stuff despite its age. I also liked how hard their current rules could lean into debuffing the enemy. But while Gitz were the army I started with, I consider my first *real* army to be Stormcast Eternals. They were what made me truly fall in love with Age of Sigmar. Listening to their stories in The Realmgate Wars books really invested me into the lore and setting in a way the Gitz simply didn't. The day when Dominion's full contents were announced and I agreed to split it with a friend who wanted the Kruelboyz, my life was changed forever. For a while after the start of 3rd, I primarily picked armies based on their general gameplay style over anything else. Even if models did play a role in my decisions. Heres my primary example: I was always interested in collecting Nighthaunt not long after starting Gitz, but their rules in 2nd edition were trash, so I never committed until their 3rd edition update. While I valued rules primarily for a while, eventually, I decided to weigh other factors more than rules or general gameplay style. I wasn't into all the different little rules you needed to memorize in order to play Lumineth, and I DEFINITELY wasnt a fan of how samey their lists were at the time. But I started collecting them because I felt very passionate about their lore, and I loved the gorgeous models. Lore and model range, I'd say, are now the primary factors I use when deciding to collect an army. I can't say I rate one over the other. They'll swap value in my eyes, or it might vary from army to army. Granted, gameplay is still a factor, but all it boils down to is "Will I like how this plays on the tabletop?" That's primarily my criteria for AoS at least. With 40K, it's somewhat different. I only have a few small armies, and most I've collected based on lore or gameplay. Only Thousand Sons somewhat break the trend because even if magical Tzeentch shinanigans are fun, I think Rubrics and Scarabs look sick as hell, and that's the main reason I invested in them. Hopefully you enjoyed reading my hobby life story. I know it was. . . Just a bit long. But there's alot of armies(mostly in AoS) I like for alot of reasons, and as I've progressed in the hobby I find it's important to talk about how my criteria for picking factions has changed over time.

I got into tau because I’ve always liked their aesthetic and the new Farsight model literally got me back into the hobby after 10 years off. I’m getting into Sylvaneth for similar reasons. I pick what looks cool and figure out how they play later

In response to luc, question about the bra boy. I guess it’s similar to gynaecology some women prefer having a male gynaecologist because they’re just more comfortable being touched by a man instead of another woman. It’s a little bit weird but people do have their preferences.
