What is it like to fast during Ramadan as a pro footballer? Players and devout muslims like Mo Salah, Riyad Mahrez and Sadio Mané have done much to elevate the visibility of Islam in modern football. But during the holy month of Ramadan competing at the elite level can get difficult. How is it possible? We talk to Dynamo Dresden’s Ahmet Arslan who has been banging in goals for fun in German football. He tells us about the challenges of practicing his faith and how to stay away from drinking water during daylight hours. Arslan feels support from his club and finds inner peace through fasting, though Ramadan is not without its attendant difficulties in Europe and Germany…

Fasting is about feeling what poor people that don’t have food feel, compassion and discipline. “Self inflicted” is a statement from someone that has none of the above
