It goes back to the 12th century when kings would marry French princesses and kept speaking it, it crept into the English language a lot more, the higher class people would speak French and so a lot of words come from that time and still exist today. History is interesting and important but US only teaches American History so you only go back 200/300 years

Some of these are French, and the British tried to replicate the French pronunciation. Coup de grace was right, charcuterie was OK. (I would not press the vowel between t and r so hard, it's practically nonexistent: shar-küt-ri.) But foyer is actually not "foyé" but more like "foáyé". The "foá" in the beginning is pronounced similarly to the French word moi, except with an f rather than an m.

What’s crazy is we don’t pronounce Lieutenant wrong on purpose. So it’s not common. I have heard the British way, but I thought they were separate. If you go to translate, they pronounce it as lieutenant as well. So it’s not our fault. Also we don’t say foyer, we say foye as well. Especially as a realtor I never pronounced it as Foyer.

4/6 of these are French or have French origin. Fym "English words" 🤨 maybe don't use words from a different language and then act suprised when English speakers confuse or bastardize the pronunciation (whether on purpose or accidentally). This always bugs me about these kinds of videos. We need to stop copying French's homework. Anyways I also got em all right, knowing that some crazy wrong people say "lef-tenant" which... I'm like 90% sure is not how you say it according to the original (French) pronunciation, but go off ig.

Indeed, the French way to pronounce lieutenant is really different, no idea where the 'f' sound come from. The French prononciation use a phoneme that doesn't exist in UK English, /ø/ , but they could have done better since it's quite close from the /ɜ/, the sound of the 'i' in 'bird' for exemple.
