To be clear, in the United States, a multiple compartment or "chambered" Septic Tank is NOT divided into equal parts... nor should it be. Typically, the 1st Compartment or Primary Chamber, is the biggest, because it's where the majority of the solids will separate from the liquid. The 2nd Compartment is usually where an Aeration Treatment Unit (ATU) or Aerobic Bacterial Generator (ABG) would be installed... basically an Air Pump, which oxygenates the Effluent. The 3rd Compartment or 3rd Chamber, which is usually the smallest, is where an Effluent Filter would be installed in the Outlet Baffle. The idea of a filter in the Outlet Baffle is to capture or trap any suspended particulates before they exit the tank, and flow to the Leaching Field or "soakaway" as you call it. The bottom line is the longer the wastewater stays in the tank, the better settling or separation between solids and liquids. In other words, it improves pretreatment of the Effluent, which can help the Leachfield or Drainfield last longer. In my opinion, multiple compartment tanks are a good idea, and having an Effluent Filter in the Outlet Baffle of the 3rd Compartment or 3rd Chamber, is usually not a problem, because it could take 3 or 4 years before it will need cleaning, and by then it's time to pump out the tank anyway. However, pumping a multiple compartment tank does cost more money, because it's more work and ultimately, a greater volume of wastewater that's pumped out, or extracted from each of the Septic Tanks compartments a.k.a. chambers.

Thanks Craig i have a little bit to decipher what you posted im completely in the dark with septic system's but learning as much ad possible, my question is when its pumped yearly or whenever what and why do we pump them out Is it left over crap gunl that didn't degrade or shouldn't have been sent down there ? THANKS YOUR POST WAS A HUGE HELP IN MY CRASH COURSE IN THIS INTERESTING SYSTEM, im a chemical operator and understand the workings of lots of different systems like filtering and so on. 😉👍🏻👏🏻🇺🇸💩👈🏻

@@dawngregory6549 To be clear, I'm in the Northeast United States... New England. Specifically, I live and work in the State of New Hampshire, and I've been a Licensed Septic Professional for about 20 years. Obviously, in the Northeastern part of the US, we have lots of cold weather and more than a little snow. As a result, Concrete Septic Tanks are very common and still the most popular here in the New England area. I think it's probably because we know that Concrete Septic Tanks can easily last 50, 60, or even 70 years. That being said, proper care and maintenance of a Septic System requires pumping out your Septic Tank every 3 to 5 years, depending on the number of full time occupants living in the home. The reason for this, is because not all of the solid waste will be broken down or digested by the bacterial action in the tank. In other words, a Septic Tank is a bacterial environment, and the microbial activity in the tank essentially eats up and breaks down the poop and the paper, which creates sludge that accumulates in the bottom of the Septic Tank. As a result, the sludge needs to be removed by pumping the tank every few years, which allows the tank to return to it's full liquid volume... whatever that may be. Typically, it's at least a 1000 gallons, and frequently could be as much as 1500 gallons. The size of the tank is dictated by the number of bedrooms, because bedrooms dictate occupancy. In my state of New Hampshire, a 2 bedroom home requires a thousand gallon tank. Nevertheless, I'm a big fan of 2 Compartment Tanks or 2 Separate Tanks, because I believe the longer the wastewater or EFFLUENT, can be contained in the tank, the better separation of the solids. In addition, longer retention time allows the bacteria to break down the waste better, which can also improve the overall function of the system. Here in New Hampshire, 2 Compartment Septic Tanks and even 3 Compartment Septic Tanks have become very popular in the past decade or so, and I think it's the way to go, and it doesn't really have a big impact on the cost of a New Septic System either.

Cheers Craig, I am currently constructing our home septic tank. Still in its primitive stages. Excavation works and you've just confirmed to me the ideal size of the tank and its longevity if maintained regularly. I have plans to develop our home into a double storey and the measurements of our septic tank is 3 metres length and 3 metres wide and 3 metres depth with 3 compartments. From Fiji. Vinaka!

@alipatetuberi7726 Good Morning and thank you... I'm glad some of the information I've shared has been helpful. To be fair, I'm obviously in the United States, and we do things differently than in the United Kingdom. We even do things differently from state to state and county to county because the geology changes. In other words, soil conditions and groundwater conditions are different from one location to another. As a result, in my state of New Hampshire, the environmental rules and regulations are specific to the typical or most common conditions we encounter in the Granite State. With this in mind, I don't know what you're facing for challenges wherever you are, but in my opinion, a 2 Compartment or 3 Compartment Septic Tank is never a bad idea. Again, the longer you can retain wastewater in the Septic Tank, the better your system should work. It improves Pretreatment of the Effluent, which means the solids or suspended particulates should separate and sink to the bottom of the tank. It also enhances bacterial action by allowing more time for the microbes to do their job. Remember, a Septic Tank is a bacterial environment, and without microbial activity, the system won't work. So, be kind to your Septic System, and make sure you always check labels when you shop, and only buy Septic Safe cleaning products... Alright?

who knew there would be a septic tank TV, let alone I'd be here watching my 5th video! As far as septic tanks go this is fantastic. I've been thinking about a self build in the middle of nowhere. A few hours on here and I feel primed! This got me thinking I could use the same strategy to filter raid / grey water too.

@NomadicHooker
@NomadicHooker 10 ай бұрын
Soakaway is just where the liquid fluids as in water leave the 3 chamber system and exits to the rock, gravel or what is used or if used and into the soil. The soil absorbs the clean water, clean as in free of poo, tissue and debris, not clean as in drinking water. That's the whole purpose of the system. The 3 chambers trap all the debris so what is left is debris free clean water that is "soakedaway" by the soil. The soil soaks it up as like a paper towel does a spill on your kitchen table. If you left that paper towel there long enough, it would eventually dry out and can be used again to wipe up another spill. In the case of a septic system, the soil around the septic tank is likely to stay wet and damp and usually why you'll see much greener grass around your septic system.

75 gals per head. 75x5=375 gals Volume= 1.125+0.75x375gals=282.37 say 283 gals convert it to cubic meter 1cum=264gals 283 divide to 264=1.07 cum total discharge to get length Length=total volume divided by width x 1.20m depth. So you have 3 chambers. The first chamber would be 1.0 length x1.0m width x 1.20+(0.30m for air space to accommodate aerobic bacteria. The 1.20m depth is for anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria are essential for the breakdown and processing for waste material.) 2nd chamber is 0.5mL x 1.0mW x 1.20D+ 0.30m air space 3rd chamber would be the same size as the 2nd chamber. You total depth would be 1.50m. Thickness of walls are not included in this dimensions. To avoid grease going into the tank, use multiple chambered grease trap below your kitchen sink.

There seems to be a huge piece of missing information. Why don't the solids in chamber one keep building up until they are above the connection to chamber 2? For that matter, why doesn't the entire thing fill with solid waste and become overwhelmed?
@silvenepistola
@silvenepistola 2 жыл бұрын
Bacteria and enzymes inside the septic tank break down the waste. That's the reason a properly sized tank is needed, so the tank can hold the solid waste first long enough for the bacteria to break them down before they get filled up.

It really depends on what type of detergents or soap that you use. For example "antibacterial" soap can and will kill bacteria in a Septic System. BLEACH is terrible for Septic Systems, so the bottom line is you need to check labels on all cleaning products when you shop. Make sure you only buy Septic Safe cleaning products, and the good news in America, is that the information is on the package... if you look for it.

The reason could be that, the successive outlets from one chamber to the next are all in the same level hence no sediments settling in the previous chamber. This allows fats, poo and scam to freely move to the next chamber, and that's a poor design.

it's a natural bacteria that comes from our own feces. Called "Aerobic bacteria", said bacteria will grow overtime and naturally help breakdown solid materials in liquid waste. It's a fully natural process. Aerobic bacteria needs oxygen to grow and be active hence the septic tank's design to allow sufficient ventilation.

Although Septic tanks are good and they work effectively, l think we should reconsider our whole premise of whether to use Septic tanks at all because it is expensive to purchase but more over it is a waste of value resources in terms of compost. Poo and urine make excellent compost and a way should rather be found to utilize this valuable commodity which essentially is recycling which is the woke buzzword nowadays apart from the term "Global Warming" which they discovered is not true so they changed the term to socalled "Climate Change" which is a better bullshit term because it can mean anything. When it's a hot summer they can say it's because of Climate Change and when it is a cold winter it's because of Climate Change. You can't ever be wrong. These wokes are very smart people.

It would be smart to construct an integrated wastewater treatment plant for 50 houses instead of doing all this huge separate individual nonsense. Of course, the wastewater treatment plant can be designed with the future development plan in mind. Say, after 10 or 20 years, a sewage treatment plant can be modified to a sewage treatment plant for 200 or 1000 houses, and so on. Waste of time and money and hugely negative impact on Mother Nature.
