How does a Rocket Oven Work?

permies.com/ovens The core of the rocket oven is the same as the core of a j-tube style rocket mass heater. A super insulated wood feed, burn tunnel and heat riser. This pushes the temperatures over 1500 degrees farenheit which burns the smoke and creosote completely - so now the smoke and creosote are bonus fuels. We can now heat the oven with less fuel and the exhaust will be mostly steam and carbon dioxide.
The "white oven" area is a simple, metal container which conducts heat from the exhaust into the area where the food cooks. So the exhaust never touches the food. And the fire never touches the metal of the inner oven.
The outside of the rocket oven is insulated to force the heat exchange with the inner chamber rather than ambient air.
The heat is extracted from the hot gasses leaving behind cooler gasses. The warmer gasses rise to the top of the outer chamber, thus forcing the cooler gasses to the bottom. The vertical exhaust at the back of the oven is warmer than ambient air, so a thermosiphon is created - pulling the cooler gasses out.
To preheat the oven, prime the riser with a small bit of fire under the riser. Then start the full fire with a lot of small sticks which will burn fast and hot. The rocket oven should heat up faster than any other oven. Put your pizza in. Put bigger wood into the feed. Smaller wood makes for a hotter oven. Check the temperature every five to ten minutes. As you get more skilled at using the rocket oven, you won't need to check the temperature as often.

Hey Paul! Good stuff man! Thanks for sharing. I'm from S.Africa, and we have this pain in our backsides called 'load shedding'. Our power supply gets cut quite often on a rotational grid basis due to... well, S.African crap. I've seen a video on homesteaders that made a rocket oven before, not much indept tech, but thats just enough to get me hooked. They had the same barrel with a 2" / 50mm spacing between oven and insulation. If I remember correctly, it heated to 350F / 180C in 15mins! Oh, the insulation was grog. Mixture of clay and hay! Looked so cool and rustic man. Now I know from your explanation, that rocket science is achievable from just a curious pipe fitter like myself! 😉👌👏👏👏

Hi Paul, thanks for sharing this video with us. I actually toyed with the idea of kiln-cum-oven that could be usable for baking with less firewod being fed and therefore less intense heat, but my worry was about the chemicals produced by the burning process that would enter the "bell" of the oven - as far as I have seen they cause color changes in pottery and I suspect they would not be good for food items either. Now I wonder whether it'd be possible to make an enclosed ceramic "bell" - have you guys ever tried something of this kind?
@paulwheaton
@paulwheaton 6 жыл бұрын
what you are describing is "white oven" vs "black oven". We have a kiln here that is black, like what you describe. The rocket ovens we have here are white. I have not yet explored the idea of a white kiln.
@IgorLarine
@IgorLarine 6 жыл бұрын
speaking of this white oven you demonstrate - what kind of metal are you using for the inner chamber? looks like standard barrel to me, doesn't it release toxic stuff off the walls when heated? I would think a stainless steel barrel'd do the trick but it also drive the cost of the oven quite high.
@paulwheaton
@paulwheaton 6 жыл бұрын
in this vid: mild steel. A **LOT** of detail on that in the upcoming dvd. As for stainless: keep in mind that stainless does not conduct heat very well.

So currently in our farm building we use a traditional wood firebox/stove. Inside this stove we have a special heating coil that heats our water. If I built this rocket oven stove and placed a similar heating coil and placed it on the outside of the barrel where the heat, soot etc circulates to heat the oven, I assume I should get temperatures around 1000- 1500 degrees to heat the water that passes through this coil? Then I can heat my water while baking.

So it is a termosyphon natural draft biomass gasifier and producer gas burner in one ?
@EKWisner
@EKWisner 6 жыл бұрын
Thermosiphon means that heated fluids (air, exhaust, or even water) rising up will draw some other warm (or cool) fluids to follow them, even if it means bringing a hot gas downward briefly to feed the upward movement. It's what allows the fire to burn upside-down and sideways in the firebox, and also helps us heat the oven evenly by where we locate the chimney outlet. All natural fuel fires burn the off-gas products and tiny particulates, not the solid parts, of the fuel. You can call a clean-burning fire by fancy names; but basically, it's a virtually smoke-free fire that does an efficient job at turning wood (and creosote) into heat. We are finding we can usually bake more pounds of food than we used pounds of wood; it's that efficient.

There doesn't seem to be two oven type tubes that would have an air flow between them. Maybe I misunderstand but it looks like the insulation is the heat exchange. Depending on the kind of insulation that might not be good. Can you clarify?
@paulwheaton

Insulation is to prevent heat exchange.

Hi Paul, How do you control the the temperature?
@EKWisner
@EKWisner 6 жыл бұрын
After a couple of practice sessions, we are finding the oven holds nicely at 350 if we just add wood about 2 small sticks at a time. (1 to 2" wood, most people would call it big kindling.) We use a brick or cover to reduce the air intake, so it matches this smaller volume of wood.
