In a given #sprint, the #developmentteam will meet at the beginning of the #sprintplanning session to determine what work will be taken into the #sprintbacklog and estimate how many points that work is worth.
In #scrum, the development team do not try an estimate how long it will take to complete a given #backlogitem, they will instead determine how much work is required to complete the task and assign a value to that work in the form of points.
Doing so empowers the team to work out how much work they can complete in a given sprint, determine a sprint goal, and create a record of how much work they are completing in each sprint to help inform future sprint goals and objectives.
As the experts, the development team are best equipped to make decisions around which work is ready for the upcoming sprint and also to decide how the specific backlog items are going to be completed.
The #scrummaster, however, is in a unique position to help the team make great decisions about the backlog items they take on and helps facilitate conversation and discussion around each backlog item to make sure the team have a great understanding of what work is being taken on, why it matters, and how they aim to accomplish the work.
So how does a scrum master do that effectively?
In this short video, John McFadyen walks us through how a scrum master can help a development team effectively estimate backlog items.
John McFadyen has worked on some of the most high-performing scrum teams in the world as both a scrum master and agile coach. He has also worked at the coalface of some of the UK and Europe's largest, most complex #agile transformations so he knows a thing or two about working with teams effectively.
