Vacuum Breaker Valve:
The Vacuum Breaker is designed to open fully and allow air to
re-enter the pipeline or system during critical vacuum conditions in the pipe or tank caused by power failure or rapid draining of the piping system.
The vacuum breaker will not allow air to escape from the pipeline. An optional air release valve can be piped to the side of the valve to release trapped air during pipeline operation.When equipped with an Air Release Valve, the Air Release Valve is used to slowly exhaust the air that was admitted to the pipeline. The slow release of air prevents the sudden
rejoining of separated columns in a pipeline and the associated pressure surges or water hammer.
The vacuum breaker is ruggedly constructed with bronze or
stainless steel trim to give years of trouble free operation.

Nice video, one small correction at 2:40, it should say elongate the spring*, not compress.

The surface that the spring compresses against isn’t shown in the moving diagram at 2:40, but you can see it in the diagram at 1:10.

Pressure/vacuum relief valves are protection devices which are typically mounted on a nozzle opening on the top of a fixed roof atmospheric storage tank. Their primary purpose is to protect the tank against rupturing or imploding. Without an opening or a controlled opening, a fixed roof atmospheric tank would rupture under increasing pressure caused by pumping liquid into the tank or as a result of vapor pressure changes caused by severe thermal changes. Imploding, or the collapsing of a tank, occurs during the pumping out procedure or thermal changes. As the liquid level lowers, the vapor space pressure is reduced to below atmospheric pressure. This vacuum condition must be controlled by allowing atmospheric air to flow into the tank. In short, the tank needs to breathe in order to eliminate the possibility of rupturing or imploding. Because of its primary function, a pressure/vacuum valve is commonly referred to as a “breather valve.”

@@TECHNICALPIPING thats a perfect reply. Completely understood. But when the líquid is reducing level during pumping out nas vaccum being formed , if the atmospheric air gets in touch with the cargo still inside the tank, cant it get ignition / explosion in case cargo is flammable??

Column separation refers to the breaking of liquid columns in fully filled pipelines. This may occur in a water hammer event when the pressure drops to the vapor pressure at specific locations such as closed ends, high points or knees (changes in pipe slope).
