Very informative video, Jay. Seeing the wood boiler in action is cool , but the exchanger and zone set up is "where the magic happens". Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for explaining that Jay. I'm a new wood boiler user. I thought that the wood was always burning with flame, but I quickly found out that's not the case. When the damper is closed, the wood is just smoldering. It is only burning with flames when the damper opens. I figured out that when the water temp reaches 180 the damper closes and when it drops below 170 it opens. When it is heating inside the house the heat exchanger is taking heat off the water and dropping the water temp. My water seems to circulate at an average temp of about 167. When the water temp gets to below 170 the damper opens and the wood actively burns to maintain the heat level. When the temp. inside the house reaches the thermostat set point the heat isn't being taken off the circulating water by the blower through the exchanger and so the water temp. climbs back to 180, the damper closes, and the burning goes from active flames to smoldering coals/wood to maintain the 180 degrees.

Hey Gerry! This is debated over and over on youtube from other owners lol from what I was told by the central boiler shop locally as long as the PH and inhibitor amounts are within range and the water looks good then its fine. I havent changed mine since we had it. I may do it next season since it will be its 13th season running (half life). Its all about the PH and corrosion inhibitor amounts for sure, thats whats important!

I got a 5068 for free this fall the out side water jet rusted and was thin and was leaking I scraped all the spray foam off and welded it all up I ended up having to cut out a 2 square foot peace. out of it, it was so thin. I got it plumed into my shop now and it works great next year i'm going run a line to the house.
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Hudson! I think I would do everything I could in my power to have mine repaired or weld in a new firebox because I do not like the new gasification boilers. I think they are over complicated and the fact you cant burn pine/soft wood is dumb because 70% of my lot is soft woods and I love the ability to burn any wood! Lets hope we dont have to worry about mine going for a while! Knock on wood! Thanks for chatting!

Jay, Doesn’t that machine have a separate ash door under the main door? Since I didn’t see one, I assume you have to let the fire go out before emptying the ashes. Am I right or did I miss something?
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Denny! No secondary burn on these models. This machine is not a gasification style boiler so when I do an ash clean out yes I do let the fire burn down a bit and usually push it back or to one side at a time! Any more questions just ask!

What's the longest you can go between loading it ?
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 6 ай бұрын
Depends on outside temp, heat load in the house, species of wood, dryness of the wood, etc. packing these full burns more wood in the long run but it will last longer between loads. I’ve gotten 24hours+ with it loaded but it’s not as efficient. I do about 1/3 load and toss a log in here and there during the day.
@patrickdunne1150
@patrickdunne1150 3 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering why you don't fill the boiler up with wood and eliminate your trip out at midnight to re-load? Looks like you had a ton of room to add more.
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 3 жыл бұрын
It burns more wood that way. I may make a video on it! All it does is heat the water up faster but I feel half load with 50/50 pine hardwood is perfect.

@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay Жыл бұрын
I dont know how an indirect works but im assuming if the indirect water tanks pulls hot water from the oil burner, if you have a heat exchanger that then heats the water flowing through the oil furnance you should be good. However, im not super familiar with your setup. Ive seen guys do side arms for certain cases.
