Nearly 12 million Chinese high school students took part in this year's National College Entrance Examination, commonly known as the "gaokao", on June 7 ad 8. As one of the hardest exams in the world, which puts great pressure on the students, the gaokao has been the subject of wide discussion over education in China. How does China's education system work? What are some of the problems? What changes could we see in the future?

Flora was reading a script at the very beginning. Then she mentioned that because she read the Dream of a Red Chamber before so she could “ easily write an essay about that”. Did she study the question properly? Some of her comments and fake smiles really put me off!

It seems like Flora came to this show as a salesperson to promote her business. According to what she mentioned, of course, her students will be accepted by the US universities because they are prepared according to the Preferred requirements of the US universities by her, but then again getting in and excelling in their studies are quite a different thing. I won't be surprised if I learned that she is working for the US government. To my understanding, the main objective of Gaokou is to make every student put effort into their studies and select the best and the brightest ones, and prepare them for the well-being of the country. As for those unlucky ones who didn't succeed it is not all lost, at least they have enlightened themselves during this process. The success and achievement of our students in the top US universities have already proven the value or the importance of Kaokou. As for David, after spending 30 years in China he still didn't fully understand or grasp the mindset and culture of the Chinese people, instead, he was trying to make the Chinese think like him. He should know that the Chinese take things quite differently than the Westerners, for the Chinese, the most important thing is the result. Freedom, workload, pressure, relaxation, hardship, pain, etc are not measured in the same way as every individual or culturally.

Students need to remember they are learning for themselves, it is ultimately their knowledge and skills, now one will be interested in their final mark one year after they left varsity. As a professor once said after 7 years of varsity "you now have the books, it's up to you to use and learn lifes skills"

"I've read the book so I can write an essay about that"?! 40/35 years ago, when I was going to school in Portugal, to write an essay I needed to read the book and a lot of other books about it, in order to write about the published opinions of the others and say why and why not it is so in my opinion. As she puts it, it seems that an essay nowadays is just to make a sum up of a book.

China nationwide exam system is to give the poor equal chance to enter university and move up in society through their merits. USA nationwide exam system initially was to select students who failed to meet the mark to be drafted to fight war in Vietnam so that smart and especially rich kids do not have to risk their lives.

Improving, promoting and raising the standard of technical/vocational schools is imperative for all societies. Not all children have the desire and some do not have the ability to attend normal universities but all societies need experts in all fields who know what they are doing and do a good job. For example, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and so on! Vocational/Technical Institutions would train these experts and a Certificate obtained from these Institutions should be recognized and valued by All, be they corporations or private citizens. In general, I believe European nations have good vocation/technical institutions so their graduates are reliable in being able to do their job well and competently. In the US and Canada, this is not so and there are many who are good "handymen" but most have not had professional training, so the quality of work is not always reliable or good. Very often, you do not realize the mistakes made until after they have completed a job in your home. Therefore, I was pleased to hear that China intends to raise the standard/prestige of their vocational/technical institutions and link them with major corporations. Those that would like to have their own business could also do so as they would have the proper training and professional knowhow learned from these vocational institutions.

We should look at education not just the pressure and exams, but also what happens to students if did not achieve top 10% during gao kao. There should be better vocational streaming to ensure everyone, or as many as possible reach their ambition.

How many students after 5 years of leaving varsity are working at a job they studied for, maybe varsity which is, in the west used as a school tie access to jobs, this should be studied and looked at, so that job satisfaction is found.

I think the body that regulates the Chinese education system has alot if work to do in regards to students physical health and transformation as much as the intellectual transformation. May be this is stemming from extreme desire to succeed as the Chinese nation. That's too much . On the children .

It appears that China's education system is being affected by two important events. The first is the "Merit System" and the second is the societal transformation from a "Farm -Agricultural to Industrial economic system". The Central Government's 10 to 20 years economic plans for the country puts pressure on the educational system to be ready for those plans that are in process and to be sure there is a successful outcome. Of course not having the Universities to meet this educational demand is going to be a problem for China. Sending China's students to foreign universities to aid in the governments goal can help, but there is an added burden on the student to learn the language he will be educated.

Popularization of technical vocational courses inspired by Germany should be made, but overcoming stereotypes about it needs to be done.

I can't believe David places any faith in students' statement of purpose. He must be being diplomatic. If foreign universities still evaluate the kids this way, they deserve what they get ... copied templates ... purchased essays ... and the output of free AI APPS.

Looking at how well China’s economy and international relations have improved over the decades, it’s folly to discount their education systems positive influence. That they continue to improve upon it with frequent revisions speaks to not only their dedication to improve the quality of life for all, but to their humility.

With huge population, how could you find suitable education for everyone to fit his innate ability? The objective is to offer everyone a fair chance to move upward based on his/her ability. It is certainly not perfect but the present mode seems fair enough. It works as seen by the outcome of China's progress in nearly every aspect of her society. Though some US State Governors simply resolve their political agenda by declaring that their State education system should be twisted simply to get their votes! Such policy will simply end up with a population unable to compete in the 21st Century. It will be interesting to see the outcome of such policy for its workforce soon!

My understanding is that the problem seems to be the 'ONE standard test'. That is, it does not matter the 'major' you WILL enroll in, everyone have the SAME test. That is why 'Flora Liu' was complaining about 'math preparation' ... for someone who was NOT going for Engineering. And, imagine Engineering candidates need to A's Shakespeare for top tier score. Though, American system is a poor model to compare to.

It looks to me, chinese (asians in general) lean to overfocusing and overstreatch in every action you do. When I was a kid, preparing a University entrance exam, we take it easy, 3 weeks of more intense study which ment about 4 hours per day studiing. Pretty normal way of study was, get a girl and go to a nearby lake, take sunbath and read some papers. When professor Llinzhao, talk about survey of percentage ration sport vs hard study, ... well I see the greatest danger of this system. People dont know why to live. People loose idea what is the happines. You often talk about creativity and freash ideas, thesee thing comes when brain gets DIFFERENT inputs from VARIOUS sources about various things. Then spark happens. Most classic is a rumour story about Issac Newton dreaming under tree, when was hit by an apple so he invented gravity law. Could this happen to a chineese student ? Overworked, sleep deprivated , stressed out student ? Could a Chinese student daydream under an apple tree ? It looks to me you are creating a system of bio-robots. Not a system of innovators and artists.

@gg KZfaq I’d disagree having traveled thru China twice (summers of 2008 and 2010) and having met many Chinese people and experience their “society” I would say you are wrong. I find Americans are the ones clueless to what values life is about. Americans are violent, angry, hostile, drug users, resentful, bitter, envious, greedy, selfish, spoiled, entitled, delusional and consumed in momentary selfish indulgence, without having to actually invest any effort or sacrifice for their goals. Americans expect it all “entitled” to them. Where as the Chinese are taught to compete and effort for your goals. Which explains why they’re where they are today in today’s world. As for creativity as an artist I can say creativity requires skills, talents, discipline, intelligence, life experience. As for scores and human beings, the effort and dedication to proceed to the next level is in itself a human quality that is earned and not just handed to them based on other things. Working your way thru challenges and merit are the greatest human being determinations of a human character. This video seems to be bias and discrediting to the Chinese culture. In the end look at the end results: the US is a violent, self absorbed, spoiled, ignorant, criminal, unskilled, and ill prepared for a 21st century globalized technological world that will require intelligence, skills, capabilities, discipline, and responsibility. China understands reality and the challenges of it. As for recreation and fun, I’d say the Chinese know more about having fun without it requiring it being crazy of doing stupid things like in the US

I suggest you ACTUALLY go to China and see the real life of Chinese. My experiences there only showed me its Americans that the ignorant clueless stressed out anxiety filled people which is why the US is “infested” with crime, violence, drugs, homeless, anger, bitterness, resentment, volatility, unhappiness, blaming, and crazy nuts. As a civilization society I’ll take China over the US any day. Children in school , elderly in church, employees at work, people in public don’t have to worry about being murdered by snapped idiots as happens in the US weekly.
