Do you want to try shooting a bare bow instinctive? Whats the secret in the sauce? Is it super calculations at the speed of light in your subconscious? Or is it simpler than that? Here is my theory on how your shot lines up without conscious effort on your part.
Shooting a Striker stinger custom takedown longbow. 60" Bow drawing 44# at 28", shooting a 525 grain (total weight) GT Hunter XT 500 spine, 100 grain brass insert, 175 grain heads. Split finger with a glove.

You did an excellent job on this video sir. You did a great job describing the way you draw and focus on the target to help get the distance. I really enjoyed the stuffed animals in the floor of the hallway. I totally agree on the low shots, a person is trying to score the target before the arrow has even made it there, causes low shots every time. Follow Through is so important. I have never hunted ELK, it is on my wish list one day. I am sorry to hear about your two shots on the two you had with in 21 yards. These arrows are screaming by, I do need to put the chrono up and see what my striker bow is shooting them at. Be fun to see the difference. I couldn't see your little yellow tape from the 30 yards, after you shot and took us to the target, I could see it. Nicely done especially for 30 yards. I thought it was yellow duck tape, you just said it is a piece of a leaf. I use tennis balls a lot. nicely done on the 30 yard shooting with 2 blade grizzly Love love love the looks of this bow you have. I am a fan of the green and it looks sweet. Thanks for sharing and keep up the fun videos. Fun story for you, I love dual sport motorcycles, I am currently looking for another one, not sure what I will end up with, I am only saying this since you have some dirt bike videos as well. My other channel is a dual sport channel. Keep up the fun videos and have a blessed week Dale

I'm new to archery and I'm using an Olympic bare-bow at 36#. I'm trying instinctive. I find that the better my form (anchor & release consistency is my issue atm), the more accurate I am. I'm not really aiming, just focusing on the target. The brain is a smart machine. I figure my cerebellum will sort out the really fine motor movement and pathways the more practice I do, ensuring my form matches my desire to hit the mark. Keep it simple stupid, so to say.

I lately started to use a bowstring since my coach told me to try it. I also shoot traditional, Hoyt Satori with 43lbs at my draw length. My anchor is lower, i put the thumb down towards the point where it touches the palm at the pinky joint. I use thethumb joint edge and put it right at the edge of the jaw under the ear. That gives me a constant anchor, but almost at the position where olympics shoot. Since i place the string shadow on the left edge of the upper limb, i get very good horizontal alignment. Especially since i use a plunger button and a arrow rest (not shooting over the bow shoulder anymore). The bowsling allows me to let the bow and the arrow move freely during the release and follow through, before i shoot i press the bow arm towards the target, that allows me to get into back tension easier than concentrating on the draw arm. I keep holding the bow longer after the shot, i get more consistent improvement in the vertical alignment. I have a olympic coach since three weeks (i shoot for two years now), we focus on form, the results on the target are not that important at the moment. There‘s a lot to unlearn first after two years of self teaching. It‘s great to have someone experienced looking at your shooting and give feedback. Also he finds other ways to approach problems. Like the back tension, instead of focusing on the draw arm, focus on the bow arm. If you press two pounds the other arm has to pull two pounds. My problem will be the vertical alignment. Since i anchor low compared to „fingertip at the corner of the mouth“, i can‘t use the arrow tip as a reference point (at 50yards target it starts to work, before that i‘m in the vegetables with the point). Also my riser is all rounded, so no reference points there. I tried the higher anchor, it feels like the arrow point would help, but the anchor feels to „soft“ there‘s no hard point to place my hand against, so it feels like i don‘t get a consistent draw length. But i might be wrong, i didn‘t try very often. The farmer sticks to what he knows, like we say here. I most likely stick to my low anchor, keep eliminating horizontal inconsistency. Vertically i pretty much have to shoot intuitively. Maybe that‘s alright with me, it‘s always a fight to want better scores, and accepting that there‘s some parts where it stays intuitive. I‘ll shoot a lot. Hoping on muscle memory. My goal is to shoot 3D tournaments in 2022. bowhunter limited. Form comes first, consistency before accuracy when training. Eliminate as many weak and soft points in the form. Deal with the points that can‘t be changed. The aim will follow (i hope). Having a coach changed priorities in learning, i concentrate less on hitting and more on the feeling in the shot cicle. If the shot feels right, the arrow will often go where you wish. 3 weeks with a coach (3 lessons) and i feel very motivated and like i learned more that in half a year of self teaching. Anither thing i learned when shooting uphill or downhill. Always hold lower than your instinct tells you. This is counterintuitive but it‘s the way to go. The vertical arrow drop due to gravity (gravity is real🤣) is lower compared to the shooting distance when shooting uphill or downhill. Greetings from Switzerland

Great video. I've been only shooting traditional/instinctive archery for about 3 months. After shooting every other day for a solid month my accuracy really improved. Then I started worrying about my form and over analyzing my technique. My accuracy started to become very inconsistent and I started to become frustrated with my results. You make a great point about focusing on the target and less on technique. Yes, my release is my main area of concern but I don't pluck the string nearly as much when I commit to the target. Very much appreciated!!

Glad you are having a good time at it, focusing on form can distract you from focusing on the target! Both are important, but it sounds like you’re learning how to harmonize the two!

Changing to a bow that is a few pounds lighter to draw, and changing to an anchor that’s a little bit longer and causes the fletching to touch my upper lip, has really increased my consistency. Shooting at 46 pound bow versus a 50 pound bow doesn’t sound like a big difference, but it has changed how steady my bow arm is at full draw. I would say I’m typically just as accurate with a heavier draw weight recurve, but my consistency isn’t quite the same- I am consistent with a heavier bow, but when I throw a shot off, it’s worse than when I throw a shot off with the lighter weight bow

Great shooting man I also love traditional instinctive shooting nothing like watching the arrow fly exactly where your looking. I've transitioned from compounds myself. Somthing that has improved my groupings and consistency greatly and I reccomend is a limb clicker I was hesitant at first but glad I tried it.

Great consistency from 30 yds, well done. I'm with you - Ive lately tried sights on my bow, gap shooting with the point, point on arrow with a fixed crawl. They are all horrible. I have to start trying guess the distances, then I have to close my right eye and squint my left to try and find the arrow point. The funny thing is - I am much more accurate (out to 30 meters), with pure instinctive - just like you. Also, I enjoy it so much more. All that squinting and guessing and calculating screws with my head and takes the fun out of it. If you keep practicing you can get really accurate with pure instinctive. Great video!

My Suspicion as to why I’m usually better at 30 yards and more consistent is it causes me to focus on the target more than up close.

So just watched your vid. I am on a similar path. Shot compound bows for 35 years and I really want to learn instinctive shooting. The way I see it, it just gets rid of all the extra stuff to deal with, releases, sights, distance judging, etc.. Just pull and shoot. So much more elegant. I just finished building my first take down recurve and have been shooting daily for about 8 days now. You are right, when starting out you have to think about so many things. What I started doing yesterday was just closing my eyes and shooting in to the hillside for the sole purpose of getting the feel of a correct anchor/release without having to focus on the target as well. I did that for 60 shots, and near the end I was starting to get a more consistent feel for the shot. So my question to you is this... how long in time or how long as in # of arrows shot did it take for you to get where you felt comfortable shooting at an animal within 20 yards instinctive shooting?

I started shooting trad bows in 2010, and within months I sold my compound and bought a custom bow. I think it was within 6 months I felt confident I could make a clean shot hunting. But there have been little discoveries along the way that have increased my confidence and consistency. At this point I feel so comfortable with this Striker bow in hand I feel like I can't miss.

If you are off left to right its a tuning or form issue as you alluded to. You should only have to calculate vertical. Instinctive is a myth though, they put an instinctive shooter in a pitch black room and had him try to shoot a laser dot on a wall, he was not able to hit it because he could not see the bow or arrow, which he was using to aim with subconsciously. Instinctive shooters are subconscious gap shooters. I cant find the video but its here on youtube somewhere. If you ask any competent gap shooter they will tell you they focus on the target, not the tip of the arrow. But they are mindful of where the tip is and how it corresponds to the target. Hope you continue to enjoy your progression and discovery of archery as a whole.

Good video! I've shot instinctive all my life, first as a kid with an all fiberglass bow , then later with composite recurves and longbows. Had mixed results, usually due to a form issue or plucking or pulling a shot. Recently have changed my anchor to a 2 point reference and my shooting has improved greatly. Found that using a 2 point anchor reference has improved my consistency.

Similar experience here, I recently (after making this video) changed to have the corner of the mouth with my middle finger AND the fletching to my lip. Very consistent and very accurate that way. Also gained some draw length and a more stable release. This bow is lighter than I am used to but with that 2 point anchor I think I shoot it better than the others now and having gained an inch of draw length I haven’t given up much poundage now.

@@Bowstringdotcom I 've heard a phase that I think summerise "aiming" in instictive archery. The phrase is "Point don't aim" point at tyhe target with your bow holding hand than your brain sort out the rest
@BooDamnHoo

That is a real nice looking bow. I do what I can "gapstinctual" based on what the dude at the 3D archery channel called it. It is sort of a semiconscious mix of gap and instinctive. I find that the more I try to actively aim, the worst my shots are but if I do a quick look down my arrow shaft to see that it's lined up with the target and then focused on the target and go (it happens quick) the better my shot is. I am trying to get to more instinctive as it is. I do know that with my 50lb recurve, if I actually aim by placing the tip of my arrow on the bullseye at about 45 yds, the arrow will hit at that point on the target (I call that my dead on aim distance given my bow, anchor point, and arrow weight) so it's harder for me to get good hits between 25 to 40 yds than to get an accurate shot at 45-ish yds. I also do well at 20 yds or closer mostly instinctive. It takes a lot of practice to get good with instinctive and I think you lose it if you change limbs to another weight.
@Bowstringdotcom

I have a few bows I shoot and switch back and forth from. This one is 46# @29” with a 525 gr arrow. I can swap to a 48# @ 28.5” and a 52# @ 28.5” (recurves- I draw the longbow 1/2” further). And I shoot a 600 gr arrrow from the recurves. I don’t change anything and they all group the same. If I hit my anchor point each one lands dead on at a given distance, the only change is the faster recurves with a heavier arrow can land accurate at 45 yards and the slower lighter poundage longbow with a lighter arrow past 35 yards no longer hits where I look. So the only limit or change I see between each is effective range where instinctive lines up the shot without conscious effort.

You want to make sure your compound cams can handle finger shooting. Otherwise, one day your gonna have a catastrophic fail. Deep groove cams and coincidently older compounds are better suited to this style. I’d be interested to hear what arrow rest you use, probably a whisker biscuit, right?

I'm not an editing pro, I just use the iMovie editor on my Apple laptop and its been simple enough that I've figured out how to use it. Whatever is working, keep it up, consistency in form and shot cycle (especially an anchor point with a consistent release) seems to be what gives consistent results. For me, that means 1- "pick a spot". 2-Draw smooth 3- hit full draw where there is a repeatable anchor (for me fletching to the lip, finger to the corner of the mouth) 4- keep focus on the spot, 5- let er rip!

That’s a very favorable review ! I really enjoy shooting these bows. I’m happily one of the many addicts of the sport and think that it is simpler than we typically believe. I have grappled with how to describe the “why it works” of an instinctive shot for years and this has been the best I can do to theorize it. I truly think ANY bow is capable of near perfect accuracy if we can simplify it, eliminate the mental voodoo and anxiety and just shoot it ( with a consistent and steady shot cycle) thanks for the thoughts !

Practice practice practice I hold the anchor at my cheek bone and look down the shaft. But you must adjust. The height. And compensate for the right angle depending on how. Far you are from your target. And there is no easy way you must practice till you know it like the back of your hand,,, I'm part native American. And I started shooting a bow at the age of 6 years old,,,

For your reference only. I am also "estimating" the distance by stepping it off. It doesn't matter if its 12, 18, 24, 32. You sound like you may be one of the "instinctive isn't real" fellows. Enjoy. There's plenty of us that know otherwise, I don't feel like its worth my time to try and prove anything to the guys that are stone walls about it. If I've misunderstood you then I apologize, but I dont have any need to make you a special video at unknown random distances. I shot plenty of stumps last week hunting for elk at unknown distance and hit the spot I was looking, that's enough to know that distance is irrelevant.
