How does pay in the military work? |
This is definitely a common question amongst those who are considering the military. Pay!
Like many other organizations in this world, the military bases pay off of a paid short or pay scale. The way it works is the higher you go on the pay scale, the more money you make. But on the same note, the longer you are in the military total, the more money you will make within that same rank and over time.
There are other factors when it comes to your total pay as well such as :
- Special Duty Assignment (SDA) pay (Recruiters, Drill instructors, Combat Instructors, Marine security guard, etc),
- Basic allowance for housing (BAH) For those who are married (this varies based off your duty station zip code)
- Special pay: Jump wings, dive bubbles, etc
- Language pay: Depending on the language and if it’s being used in your duties etc.
These are the main ways you can get paid in addition to your normal paycheck. Now again this is not everything, when you deploy you rate things such as hazard duty pay, families separations pay if you’re married, COLA depending on where you live overseas, etc so there are other ways, but some aren’t always common.
Lastly we get paid every two weeks (1st and 15th) No matter what! It doesn’t matter if there is a pandemic or a recession or something going on in the world that has the potential to affect civilians and their pay, your pay in the military will always be guaranteed!

When I was in the Marine Corps as a Corporal I was paid 4k a month but when I questioned it I was told to keep my mouth shut 😮

Can’t wait to get my DD214, private sector pays more for my field, but the good thing is their is always a 18 year old who doesn’t know better. Also, HM quotas are garbage.

Yeah you’re definitely right. The PS absolutely pays more. Most people stay in not for the money, but for the comradery and structure. Agreed with quotas being garbage but as you leave someone must replace you. Best of luck in the civilian world 🤙🏼🔥

No. Reserves is part time so you only get paid when you work (on orders aka working your weekend each month) When you’re not working/on orders , you don’t get paid. Active duty gets paid 2x per month since this is our primary Job

They would get the same base pay as anyone else holding the same rank but I’m sure they earn some sort of special pay such as dive, jump if they’re qualified and hazard while deployed.

Yes. Your pay is your rank. Hours and job does not matter, which is why it is important to find something you will not mind getting up everyday and doing

Idk what to choose. Army or marine. I’m indecisive and it’s hard bc if I go marine I get the title of marine and I get to look nice in a uniform but have no real way to take care of my family if I go army I might get a bonus depending what Job I choose how long I stay in and I can take care of my family (my mom and stuff) I just idk honestly and I over think
