@JeanEDeaux There are city-to-city high-speed passenger trains (operated by Eurostar), and also the car trains which operate only in the tunnel itself, being too tall for normal train tracks (operated by EuroTunnel).

Prices went up and service went down. Pro tip: don't book anywhere near peak times, and don't miss the trip or you don't get a refund. Get an air quality monitor down there and be scared to breathe. (I worked for them)

I have a friend who helped build the tunnel. Said they regularly stole tools to buy new ones at inflated prices and someone pocketed the cash in between. They would also smoke ''fat ones'' down there...

Yes, there are several types of trains : Eurostar high-speed trains running from Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, etc. to and from London. They run at 300kph outside the tunnel (186mph) and up to 160kph (100mph) in the tunnel. Eurotunnel "le Shuttle" trains for cars, RV's, busses, etc. These ones are gigantic, half mile long trains, and only run between the two terminals on each side of the Channel. Eurotunnel lorry shuttles, just as long as the car trains, they carry semi trucks, lorries, etc. They also only run between the two Eurotunnel terminals. And finally, freight trains that run between the UK and continental Europe. In fact, there are 3 tunnels, the 2 main ones each having one railway track for each direction ; and between them is the smaller service tunnel for evacuations and maintenance. A road tunnel would have been a safety nightmare... Plus, the unpredictability of the human behavior at such depth would make a road tunnel impossible to operate. It would also have needed several lanes in each direction to barely even remotely approach the capacity of one single track rail tunnel. The tunnels being dug in a very specific soil layer, they aren't straight at all : they turn, twist, dive and climb continuously. You barely feel it in the trains, but drivers would panic if they were at the wheel.

The car inside a train going underground is a pretty cool, however, here in NYC we have about three underground water tunnels so it’s not a big deal.

Eurotunnel supposedly cost over £20 billion in today's money to build. Imagine if they wouldn't have put a rigorous safety control measure in place. Consider an accident, a collision, emergency rescue, congestions, a vehicle explosion inside the eurotunnel and ciao hasta la vista baby👋 By using the train the like hood of any of that happening while parked inside the train/engines off, pretty much that risk seize to exist
