How Does The Music Industry Work? And What Should YOU focus on with your music?

When explaining how the music industry works, I really like to focus on the biggest struggles for independent musicians:
The biggest challenges when it comes to the music industry are making an income from your music, growing your audience and fanbase, and lastly, accomplishing all this without getting lost, frustrated, and discouraged by the process.
In this video, I set the stage for how I approach my career in music. For my own career, I've simplified the music industry into three main categories that I focus on: Audience Growth, Music Monetization, and the Technical Nuts and Bolts of the music industry.
Thinking of it in these three categories helps me find clarity, and direction as to what actually matters. If you don't have an audience, then you don't have any traction. Once you have traction, you need to build your revenue streams. And lastly, there is a technological and strategic skillset that is required in order to complete the circle of success.
Whether you're trying to grow your fanbase on Spotify, Soundcloud, KZfaq, or Instagram, it really is a matter of making sure you create more content than just the songs you write. Building a fanbase for your music involves being very public and building a fanbase from scratch requires lots of content.

Def! Need to try this! I first started making music about 3 months like for real and have seen growth but now I’m at a stopped point where I don’t see any growth.

Artists usually grow quick early on when they create the content that they want... but then the plateau happens when you don't adjust based on fan feedback. I recommend doing a bit of research on what content resonated the most in the past, while also asking your fans what they want/expect to see from you in the future. Then you'll get more engagement and more growth (and happier fans)!

I am focused on growing my fan base on social media, trying to create a platform for myself, and I feel like I’m doing a pretty good job, but I’m working on my first EP as an independent artist and I’m planning on also releasing music videos and merchandise along with the EP, my style of music is very synth inspired pop music, what I would like to know is when building a fan base, what’s the most effective way of finding them? Also, I would love to have a one on one to learn more, I’m in the process of finishing my last semester of college and then after that I’m gonna focus on my music career. Your advice would definitely be helpful, thank you!

Hey Kenny, congratulations on graduating soon and for wanting to take the dive into full-time music! As I've covered on this channel, everyone's individual career is unique and it's hard to give cold-hard, actionable instructions without digging deep into your strengths and needs of your fans. I'm glad you recognize that and want to talk one on one! The short answer to your question is that the best way to reach new fans and grow your audience is through advertising-but there are really two best ways that are tough to explain in a YT comment. Let's get a call scheduled (totally free) and dive deeper into your specific career. When you're ready, go ahead and sign up for your free meeting with the link below. Looking forward to chatting! members.lionbold.com/artist-development

Link don't work. And the price you charge for spotify streams is extortionate. We are absolutely overwhelmed and this is just monetising on desperate artists. Adding to the severe problem that industry benefits from but the artists do not. The "audience growth" strategy is really just a confirmation strategy on an already captured fan base.

I really don’t enjoy the way you said “Stop looking at your music as an artist and start looking at it as a business.” Unbelievable
@IndieMusicAcademy
@IndieMusicAcademy 5 жыл бұрын
What I actually said is "Stop thinking of the music industry like an artist and think of it more as a business" which is a statement I stand behind because I believe that there is a strong entrepreneurial aspect to navigating the music industry. But I dig if you have a different opinion. What is your alternate opinion on how musicians should view the music business?

Lion Bold Records I think it’s a fact of just enjoying and loving what you do before you try to make money off of it. What’s the point in trying to make money off of music you don’t really care about
@IndieMusicAcademy
@IndieMusicAcademy 5 жыл бұрын
@@chrisssofficial1751 I completely agree. Steve Jobs said that "Any rational person will give up when doing things they don't love because they are sane." Giving up feels like defeat, but it's not a defeat if done for the right reason. I 100% support people who do music as a hobby, but this channel is about doing music as a job. If an artist doesn't LOVE the WHOLE process of writing, recording, marketing, and delivering music to your fans and every aspect of building a music career, then it's okay to move on to a career they do enjoy! Thanks for your comment btw, I think we are on the same page because my message is just for people who are wanting to make music their job. No shade to folks who just want to have a good time with their music.

Audience growth strategy: Videos!!!! Make videos for TikTok and Instagram (not necessarily music videos). Joseph Solomon and Iniko make tons of video content. They do a lot of covers and people love it. They both have very specific aesthetics for their videos and they post content consistently. I have seen them both grow so much. I would recommend recording a bunch of videos in one session and then creating a posting schedule (based on your apps analytics) for the best time to post.

I think the fastest way is to tour, it's easier these days, go on Instagram, choose a place you want to play, call them and negotiate a reasonable fee(obviously not full price) and go play. Don't forget to have merchandise (CDs or USB ) and sell. It's worth making a banner of social media handle. That's my take
