How does this Mechanical Counter Work?

This is a mechanical counter that can go from 0-999 in both increasing and decreasing counts- and the whole thing is made with 3D printed parts- no additional hardware was used!
Something as simple as keeping count is easy to do in the digital space. Before computers and the digital age, however, we used gears and other mechanical components to achieve things such as keeping count. This is a 3D printable adaptation of a really cool mechanical device that is becoming increasingly obsolete in modern times.

We still use these for cell counters in the lab! Very cool to see how the internals work.

Actually, these haven't totally disappeared. For example, you can still find them on asthma inhalers. In any case, yeah, there is so much clever stuff in those kind of total mechanical systems. Thanks for sharing it with us!

It's so funny (sad?) to see a young person get so excited about this "obsolete technology" when it is so familiar to me because I grew up surrounded by it.... And they say you're old when policemen look young.... Sigh!

Is there a name for the mechanism where the lever makes the first wheel turn 1/10th of a turn?

I remember these counters. I had many different ones in my childhood, but I don’t remember where they came from )). But I remember that all of them had RESET button, pressing on it all digits on all wheels set to zero. I am wondering how this was made.

My guess is there would be a torsion (rotational) spring in it that would wind up as it counts, and when you hit reset it would unwind the numbers back to 0. (Just a guess though)

Im wondering if this is a possibilty. If I were to redesign this counter so that it only goes to 30, and every time it hits 30 it rotates another wheel, with a month, technically, wont it be a perpetual calendar?

Actually a counter, even a mechanical one, is digital by definition: It shows an actual number.
