From the random stranger that your well-behaved dog barks at in the street, to the neighbor that your pet refuses to go near, sometimes it seems dogs just know when someone is a ‘bad’ or ‘good’ person. Stick around till the end of this video as we dig up the dirt on your dog's incredible abilities.
Dogs can detect a mean person
According to a study published in the journal of Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews, dogs can tell when someone is mean to you!
In three different scenarios, a dog owner was trying to open a container that was tightly sealed with an actor standing next to them. The first actor helped open the container, the second was passive, and the third outright refused to help.
Scientists found that the dogs were much more likely to accept a treat from the actor who tried to help and showed kindness toward the owner.
Most dogs also accepted food from the passive actor, but they were not willing to trust the person who didn’t lend a hand.
Dogs can detect liars
Another study conducted in Japan followed a similar experiment to find out if dogs can recognize an untrustworthy person.
In this experiment, the scientists placed two containers near the dogs. One had treats inside, but the other was empty. In the first test, a person pointed to the container that concealed a treat, but the second time, the person pointed to the empty container instead.
The dogs were happy to find the treat the first round, but were disappointed when they found out they were lied to in the second time. Then, the third round, the person pointed to the container with the treat again. However, that time, the dogs did not go for it. That person had been untrustworthy and deceitful in the second round, and the dog remembered that.
Dogs can remember their owner’s scent forever
Dogs can remember the scent of their owners for their entire life.
A dog’s memory is so complex that they will remember emotions associated with their owner or a person they met. The association of how that person made the dog feel remains stored in the dog’s brain.
When a dog recognizes a particular scent associated with a human that has brought them joy, a particular portion of their brain is triggered, and they remember them.
Studies have shown that an owner’s scent activates the pleasure centers in the dog’s brain. It’s similar to the way the human brain responds to the perfume or cologne of a loved one.
Dogs can interpret facial expressions.
In a touchscreen experiment in Austria, scientists put dogs to the test.
When the dogs were shown angry or happy faced pictures of people they hadn’t seen before, they were still able to tell the difference and earn that reward.
The scientists say that the experiment proves that dogs can discriminate between the two human expressions. Dogs had a natural aversion to pressing their noses against pictures of angry faces. This means that our furry friends have some knowledge about the meaning behind human expressions.
Dogs can smell bad intentions
If your dog barks at some people, but not the others, it could be that your dog picks up on subconscious signals you send about those people.
Outwardly, you may be being welcoming and friendly to a person, but your dog will notice tiny, subconscious signals that you are not completely comfortable around that person.
Your dog can sense when you are nervous because your body produces certain stress-related chemicals and hormones that have distinctive odors.
On that note, remember that dogs can smell fear. In a study of 694 people, the scientists found a link between an individual’s emotional state and their likelihood of getting bitten. Confident and emotionally stable people didn't get bitten nearly as often as those who feel anxious around intimidating dogs.
Dogs can read your body language.
According to animal behavior specialists, canines will pick up on every move a dog or human makes.
This is because dogs rely on canine body language to assess their own safety when they are around other dogs.
Dogs can smell serious illnesses
Believe it or not, dogs can detect cancer. Simply by sniffing someone’s body.
A study conducted at the University of California Davis has shown that dogs can detect Cancer-affected tissues out of many samples.
Dogs can even be life-savers for people with diabetes.
A dog’s super nose can also predict seizures, and migraines, and can detect malaria and Parkinson’s disease.
Now, let’s talk about why dogs bark at some dogs, but not the others.
While humans communicate using words, dogs mainly communicate through their body language and scent.
Your dog may bark at some dogs because they show threatening body language and have an off-putting scent.

Ann Rule mentioned this in her book The Stranger Beside Me. The title refers to Ted Bundy, who was a coworker of hers for a while, and she had no idea he was capable of the crimes he committed. She wrote, "The only clue I had was that my dog (who liked everyone) didn't like Ted at all. Whenever he bent over my desk at the Crisis Clinic, she growled and the hackles on her neck stood up. The lesson is clear: Pay attention to your dog!"

Well, I feel I am not a bad person but I once wanted to pet a dog on the train, and just did so, so the dog was suprised by it-and I shouldnt have done that. But when we all got out of the train the dog recognized me and growled at me and also other dogs bark at me. I do think they sense that I am always in my head and not in my body and due to violence comitted to me, I feel anger inside me. So, yes it probably is true that the dog senses something is off.

The part about dogs forever memorizing smells of people important to them made me take a trip down memory lane. When I was little more than a toddler, our neighbor had a Shiba which was still an extremely rare and unknown breed here in Europe at the end of the 90s. Fatefuly, we were both born the same month of the same year and ended up growing up next to each other, a green see-through fence separating us. The dog, named Luis, wasn't happy : his owner never took him out to walk, was rarely at home and he didn't really take much care of him. So Luis decided he wanted to stay with us and dug a passage under the fence to come over to our garden. Every single day after his owner went to work, he would crawl under the fence, come spend the day with me and then go back to his house in the evening before his owner returned. When I was 4, due to my father's work, we moved to a different country and got separated. A decade later, teenager me came back to where I spent the first years of my life. I went to the front gate of Luis house and, before I could even call his name I saw him, now an old dog, cruising out of the house followed by a younger Shiba. The younger Shiba stayed a bit back, watching me with a mix of curiosity and wariness ; Luis, on the other hand, was so happy he was screaming and jumping all over the place. In that moment, I was certain : after almost 10 years apart he still remembered me, still recognized me. This was the last time I got to see him and it still breaks my heart that I couldn't just open the gate and cuddle him in my arms.

The part about a dog's memory of an owner's scent is very true. My dad adopted my dog after I moved away. I was 22 at the time and I thought a puppy was just what I needed. I had my dog for about 4 or 5 months before I realized I wasn't home enough to provide her with the life she deserved. My dad had just retired and he said he would take the 9 month old pup and give her a great life. I knew it was the right thing to do. She always loved me though, and anytime I would visit, she always stuck by my side. My dad became her favorite person. But he died 13 years later, one day when he was cutting wood with the dog, in the woods behind the house. When Mom found him, the dog was asleep in the truck. She had no idea what had happened. After he died, my dog never stopped watching for him to come home. Mom would come home in the car and the dog would see her park from the front window of the house. My mom would open the front door and the dog would whine and cry looking for dad as she circled the car. Then after she couldn't find him, she'd come in and greet mom. It was just mom and the dog in the house after that. The dog never really loved my mom like she loved my father or myself, she never quite understood that it was just mom and her left. She thought dad would be home tomorrow. At night, the dog would sleep on the couch in the living room, waiting for my dad to come through the door. For 3 years it was like this. By this time my dog was 16 years old, arthritic, mostly deaf, and mostly blind, with roughly 6 teeth left in her mouth. She required a special diet and we needed to take extra care to preserve her kidney functions. One night, I drove to Mom's house and I didn't get there until midnight or 1. The living room light was left on for me, and there was my dog, asleep on the couch. She didn't hear me come through the door and the light didn't keep her up. She was snoring in her little doggy sort of way. I brought my bags inside and gently walked to my room. I sat my things down on the bed and returned to see if the commotion had woken up the dog. I must have been quiet enough, because I did not wake her. So, I walked beside her little sleeping body and waved my hand to blow my scent over her face. Her little nose began to wiggle as she started to take short chopping sniffs as her head lifted from the pillow. She didn't even have her eyes opened before she started to whine and cry in excitement. She got up as fast as she could and wiggled her old bones all over the place as she became filled with joy. I will never forget that night. My scent was all it took to wake her up from a very deep sleep. She died of a stroke about 3 months later, she was 2 months shy of her 17th birthday. I held her as she died. I was her last smell, I hope it was enough to stir a great memory together, as she slipped away forever.

@@jonharrison3114 Dogs don't really understand death like we do. They don't know that it's permanent. My dog eventually inspected and smelled my Dad's body. She still waited for him to return. A dog can understand when any living thing quits interacting with them after a traumatic event, like a fight or some other experience. But they don't really understand what it means. My dog got to sniff and see my dad's body. She just waited for him to wake up. Any time he slept, she left him alone. There is nothing you can do, short of destroying a person's body in front of the dog, to show them someone is never coming back. Dogs love their pack. They serve their leader. Even when that leader isn't around. They are Conditioned by us to expect us to eventually return. We always return. We may leave for a few weeks or months, but we always come back. That's why they never stop looking. They speak a different language than us. Dogs have a similar understanding to 2 year old humans. 2 year olds cannot understand death.

This one day, there was a guy passing by us and I noticed my pup sat on my feet (facing away from me) and started growling and not taking her eye off him. The guy was so spooked, he went to the opposite side of the street. I always suspected she did this b/c she detected something and wanted to protect me. Who knows….my pup is prob the reason I was able to return home that night 🤔🥹🥰

@@yesman1743 exactly, I don't believe dogs can read through you, rather just for the moment. I am a piece of shit, or used to be; and dogs either love or hate me depending on my mood. I've had dogs be pissed at me just because the day went to shit, and every time I give the dog a direct eye contact and piss the dog off more, just to have them retreat from fear. Other times I'm in a great mood and dogs come up to me and ask for love, and I give it to them. I fucking hate dogs that are reactive, they sit there and agitate you because they don't like your energy. I have to deal with people with shitty energy all the time; I don't get to yell at them for an hour because of it though. One day I seriously feel like I'll end up kicking some dog across the room, just because I was in a shitty mood and it felt like agitating me. That's why I love cats, I can be in a shitty mood and they come up and want to help me; they don't agitate because they can see I'm agitated. I trust my dog first. When he shows alarm around a new person, I listen carefully. Horses, cats, etc. have shown me the same respect. He was invaluable while I was temporarily homeless. He took treats and wagged his tail at many of the people around me. There were a few he flew into a rage whenever they got near me. He was right; and I took the hint. Usually, others came forward to quietly inform me that the dog had good instincts. He is a rescue, who has rescued me many, many times since. I show him the kindness and care that he has always shown towards me. I don't know how they do it; but I trust the process. Animals have many senses that we lack; we need their help. Rats can find mines or survivors in the rubble, dogs can alert to cancer, seizures, help a blind person see, etc. Respect them.

A lot of this depends on how the owner treats the dog and what kind of environment the dog is raised in. I have come across dogs that wouldn't let me go. I would come over and they would run to me to be pet and loved. I have also had a handful of times where dogs did not like me. It's not always the personality of the person.

Due to all the lock downs Sydney siders all bought dogs and they are everywhere now and as a fellow sufferer but not a per owner just watching them in the street has done me the world of good and the following is a true story. I was out working Uber eats on my bike when I was stopped at a pedestrian crossing reflecting on the fact that god is dog spelt backwards when a Groodle looked me in the eye and I heard the words in my mind "you have your answer" I rode for a bit still "reflecting" when it occurred to me the we are the ones who are spelling it backwards and that they really are gods who walk the earth to show us how its done by accepting everyone you meet as family, google maps then said "turn left into Barker street".

I have a service dog for PTSD and she’s literally saved my life. I’ve always said she is my “danger alert” too as she has an uncanny sence of determining “baddies”. One time we were walking alone on a beach and she kept looking behind and growling and barking (which she hardly ever does) I turned around to see what she was so upset about and noticed 2 guys walking a considerable distance behind us. I trusted her instincts and lead her off the beach and up to the street and took a different route home. We pass people when out walking all the time and she’s trained to ignore everybody but now I know, if there’s someone bad around, she’ll tell me.

This explains something that happened with a dog I used to have. We took our dog to the family Christmas get together. My sister in law was there with her boyfriend and their kids. Her boyfriend had a son around 7 or 8 and was a real mean kid, was always disrespectful to adults and would bully my nephew. We had a yorkie/pomeranian mix that took one look at the kid and started growling. The other kids would come up and pet her and she would show no reaction, but she refused to let this one kid near here. If he moved towards her she would step back and start barking. The whole time I kept thinking of that scene in Ace Ventura Pet Detective where a dog starts growling at the villain and Ace says "so it's true, animals can detect evil."

When I was a kid, I was in an abusive "friendship" with this one awful girl who used to bully people, like would even physically assault her mother, call her a bitch, etc. One time she came over by my house and looked out the backdoor window where our dogs were, and they IMMEDIATELY started tensing up at her. Like would not blink, their hair was standing on end, and they began growling and barking at her. Prior to that, I had NEVER seen them act that way towards someone, and they usually loved meeting new people.

You have to take that with a grain of salt because some dogs are hyper protective to thier owners no matter what. I embrace dogs and there have been a few who just growl no matter who it is because the owner is around. It does matter how owners influence thier dogs behavior. With any experiment you have to look into the details of the experiment. If its sample size is reliable, what kind of dogs were used, and other factors. Different dogs have different aggressions. However, there is no doubt dogs are sensitive animals. "Mans best friend"

I had a Malamute mix for 16.5 years. One time I went to visit someone who lived really close to where I lived and I had been friends with but had gotten into drugs really bad. I walked my dog over and brought her some food. He was probably around 5 at the time. We were sitting in her living room and my dog was right between my legs on the floor. Staring down the empty hallway. So alert. Suddenly, one of the doors started to open, and my dog's hackles stood up so high, his entire crest, down his shoulders. And this almost imperceptible low growl started from deep in his chest and as the door opened more, it got louder. A man walked out into the hall. He was white, probably 6 feet, at least 250. You know those big thick guys? Big boned kind of tank fat? Shaved bald. My dog stood up as he was growling and backed up onto my lap, completely blocking me from view, fully between this guy and me, and he hunched down like he was going to spring off and lunge at this guy as he came down the hall. Obviously he stopped at the end of the hallway, he came to the entrance of the living room and stopped dead, finally hearing and seeing this 115 lb wolf like dog ready to tear his throat out. He asked, "What tf is wrong with your dog??" And I remember thinking, _No, what tf is wrong with YOU?_ My sweet, gentle dog who lets kids sit on him and spends his time swimming in lakes getting kids to hold onto him so he can bring them to shallow water where they're safer, is ready to rip you apart to keep you away from me. He was only aggressive/suspicious of people a few times and he was right every time. Once a friend of my bf at the time stayed over at the house. Apparently he woke up at like 6 or 7 and couldn't find a cigarette, so he went out the laundry room through the garage so he didn't have to wake us up, and went to the store. He said he came back, and when he opened the door to the laundry room, my dog was sitting there waiting. And wrapped his teeth around the guy's hand and started biting down until the guy pulled the door shut. He let go. He was protecting the house. Another time he was home on the porch alone at my mom's and a guy my mom knows came up on the porch and knocked on the door. My dog didn't move. He tried the handle to see if it was locked. Bad move. He called my mom freaking out that he had been stuck on the porch for 10 or 15 minutes but every time he tried to get off, my dog would scare the sht out of him, and he made her come home and tell my dog it was ok. He went and lied back down. Job done. I really miss that dog. He was my life partner for a decade and a half of my life. He was given to me at 5 weeks so I even bottle fed him briefly. I used to say I should've called him Shadow because he was always in my personal space bubble, within reach, I never felt unsafe or vulnerable with him. I wish I still had him but he was like 120-140 years old when he passed. He stayed as long as he could.

My husky was chill with everybody, never got aggressive or barked incessantly. But whenever my grandfather would show up, he'd get tense and start barking at him through the window. Even went as far as to show a bit of fear when he got close. He never got used to him after his frequent visits. Nothing about my grandfather set off alarm bells to me; he was a chill old man who never hurt anyone. But later on I heard that he was a bit of an animal abuser when he was a kid, twisting cat tails, smacking dogs around, that sorta thing. If he was sensing his past, it was pretty wild that he could tell after decades and decades ago. Like I said, this was literally the only person in the world he had issue with; strangers and people delivering packages he would just stare at with curiosity. Other family members like my uncle and cousin he would embrace their affection every time.

My late husband invited an old school friend over one evening. The friend took his friend. Immediately, you could tell our GSD did not like this other man. For the entire evening our dog wouldn't take his eyes off this man. When one stood up to leave, our dog was OK. When the other stood up to leave, our dog started barking, growling and baring his teeth. The man sat down again. This happened several more times until we removed our dog from the room. This is how GSDs operate. As soon as the person they don't like tries to leave (and this includes intruders like burglars), the dog will prevent them from leaving. Our dog did not like this man and nor did I - there was just something about him. We found out a couple of years later this man had a criminal conviction for crimes that, shall we say, involved young children. Our dog was right. I would trust a dog's judgement over a human's any day. Sadly, I no longer have our lovely dog as I lost him to old age 2 years ago.

I grew up with a GSD, who was normally very VERY protective of the house around strangers. When my uncle, who had lived out of state for the dog’s entire life, relocated back home we were prepared for a long process of introducing a new person into his world. It took seconds. I maintain to this day, the dog recognized a “family scent” and just instantly accepted my uncle as part of the pack, it happened too quickly to be anything more complex or behavioral.

Dogs are really quick to pick up on how their owners feel. When my husband passed away, Buddy came over and put his head on my lap, looked up at me with his soft brown eyes as if to say "It's OK. I ran an beach side, Island Style Dinner Show for about 10 years here on Guam. Guam has a large population of feral dogs and we had about 9 or so that hung out under the stage on most days. I noticed that when Tourists walked along the beach, by the venue, the dogs paid no attention most of the time. But, when local strangers came by, they would all come out barking and make a fuss. They also seemed to know who was a potential beach bar customer and who was not. I observed this behavior for years and it always amazed me how they knew who was who. These were just feral pups with no humans training them about anything.

As a person who gets high anxiety, I've had many dogs bark at me for this reason. I mightve made their owners think im some sort of bad person. But really, I just get high anxiety around new people in general. I wish dogs could understand that there's a difference between anxiety and evil intent.

Same - but I've found a lot of dogs are a lot like their owners. Sweet dogs with kind owners get my anxiety and act like "it's okay, dude - I still love you". But jerks get off on watching their fearful, aggressive dog make people nervous (which I rationally know is just the dog's own fear response at my state of anxiety, but still makes my anxiety worse creating a vicious circle).

@MyGuitarTwerks don't listen this bs:D I had similar problem in the past. Everything changed when I moved into the new dorm. It was a fenced community, and security folks tend to let their dogs go around after the midnight. The dogs barked a lot on anyone who approached the territory, and even could attack you if you would mess up. We were students, and you know, even with the dogs, from time to time, we came back after the midnight. So security folks explained us how to interact with the dogs. Nothing very special - no running, let them sniff your fist. First few times, I came back with other guys, so it was helpful, and then I got used. Not saying the steps are applicable to any dogs, but the best thing you can do is to ask a dog-guy/cynologist for a lesson on what to do/do not with the dogs. Shortly, learn and practice to interact.

I have wondered for a while if some dogs have better intuition than others. Or maybe it's just a difference in how they follow their intuition. I remember being outside in a group when I was at a mental health clinic, and a dog who was being walked by someone from a nearby building came up to meet me for the first time and he just plopped down right on my feet. In that moment I was feeling really depressed and his presence comforted me a lot. His name was Benny. There are dogs like Benny. But then there are yappers who seem to kind of just bark and sniff everything and don't seem interested in anything besides treats. All dogs have their own personality so I guess, so it seems plausible that some would be more inclined to comfort people than others. Dogs are interesting.

I knew a German Sheppard who hated people in uniform, whether it was a maintenance person, or mailman or whatever. When he saw that uniform it made him very uneasy. He was fine with anyone else, and so we figured he must of been treated badly by someone in a uniform. Perhaps a mechanic because he was adopted. We were told he came form a junk yard situation and was used as a guard dog to guard the yard in all kinds of conditions.

She is also the “sniffiest” dog I’ve ever met, her nose is always to GE ground (which we’re working on, because it’s generally not appropriate for a working SD). I discovered that she can smell when I’m having asthma symptoms. She can detect it from other people too - including the dog behaviorist we’re working with. So we’re working on shaping that into an alert and a response. She is also being trained to perform tasks/do work related to psychiatric disabilities.

I’d never been bitten before. Fast forward to now, no matter how I approach some dogs (this doesn’t happen with all of them) they’ll act nervous around me or bark at me. Delivering packages 20 years ago I had almost no fear of dogs and that lasted about 6 months when after leaving something on a porch an Alaskan Malamute was calmly sitting on it bit me three times in less than a second slicing the tip of my middle finger. It took about a year before a dog could come around a corner without the hairs on the back of my neck sticking up. Eventually with exposure to enough dogs you'll just run into a dog that bites. You just have to learn to read them. A house with dog toys in the yard will never have a mean dog. Some will try to bite you from behind so let them see your face. I'd avoid any poodle but most pit bulls I have no problem with. If the tail is wagging they are cool except for dogs that growl and wag their tail at the same time which I haven't figure that out. Some dogs you can scare away. Probably some dogs don't like me because I'm slightly more weary but I've only been bit once since then from a dog that slipped through an open door. So for my job it's better to be a little cautious than naively thinking no dog will ever bite.

I am one of those people who can go for a walk in the country in an area I have never before traversed, and come back with a pack of farm dogs tagging along. I knew a young couple whose dog behaved diferently with me depending on which of the pair was present on the times I dropped by to visit. They were friends of my husband and I only managed to actally visit and interact with the dog five times. I liked both of these people and I enjoyed their company. I also liked their dog. When I was visiting and the man was there, the dog was relaxed with me. The three trimes during our visits when the man left with my husband on an errand and it was just me and the woman there, her dog immediately became overly protective and aggressive with me; the third time, it even blocked my path, and grasped my arm firmly enough to leave a bruise when I walked towards the woman. There was no growling - ever, but the message was clear: stay away from my human. I have never had a dog react like that towards me before or since. I was puzzled by this, as the woman was always pleasant towards me and she came across as if she wanted to be my friend; I liked her and I had no problems being with and interacting with her; but I know enough about dog behaviour to know then to keep an eye on this person, as it was highly possible that her dog was picking up on what she truly thought of me. But the woman was so pleasant that I chalked it up to typical canine protective behaviour towards a stranger. After she and her husband moved onto my farm for a couple of months (without the dog as my LGDs woud have probably killed it), it took less than a month for her facade to slip, and I could see that she did not like me at all; the reason why her dog behaved the way it did towards me whenever it was just the woman and myself together was due to the woman's negativity towards me and that she did not want me around her; the dog picked up on that and acted accordingly - as it should.

I moved from my mom’s house to my dad’s house to leave the country I was in. 1 year after I came back our dog was happy to see me, but he wouldn’t let me carry him anymore, nor hug him. It surprised me because I got sent pictures of him sleeping in my bed during that year. The next year when I visited again he tried to bite me, and was territorial towards me. Which he had only been when we first got him from the shelter. Lil buddy probably thought that I abandoned him. Specially since or other dog who used to keep him company ended up dying not so much after I left.
