Dr. Martens boots are known for surviving music festivals, sandstorms, and mountain climbing. The company offered lifetime guarantees for its For Life boots and shoes, but it discontinued this service in March 2018.Dr. Martens take time to break in, and when they are comfortable, many people don’t want to part with them. Julie Derrick is a cobbler in Portland, Oregon, who's made repairing Dr. Martens her specialty. She explains how she restored a pair of boots where the soles started to detach and turned it into new.

One thing you need to understand is I have 30 year old Docs, I don't wear anymore because I've worn them out. In the present, and for the past 5-7 years, Dr Marten company has released two new versions of the 1460 (8 hole, black), the boot you see here. The company exported manufacturing almost 20 years ago. Die hard fans noticed a vast difference in workmanship and quality of materials. So, to appease the fans, they sell the outsourced footwear, including the 1460, at all major retailers, and from their own webstore. For 150% to 200% more, a person can buy a 1460 Lifetime boot, or a UK manufactured boot exactly the way they had made them for decades, over half of a century at this point. The Lifetime boot is what it sounds like. It is the retail version, but with free replacement boots, for life. The UK manufactured one is my preference... but they need to be worked in.

@@bobastu the lifetme boot discontinued in 2018. Also the Made in England 1460 boot which claims to be the same isnt a patch on one from the originals. The leather was thicker and so was the sole which also bouncier and had far more tread.
@bobastu
@bobastu 2 жыл бұрын
@@g4geetar I have the made in England boot. Once I put it on, I was immediately transported back to my first Docs. Not the ones I bought at the shoe store at the mall in the late 90s and forward. I had to break these in. Not just put on and go. Leather feels like a higher grade. I don't think I'm going to get the leather separation wrinkles past the toe box, while I am getting wear there, it's not the same. The sole does feel different too. For me, with the money. Docs started as a police/ military type boot, and that is what I was reminded of when I put on my Made in England 1460s. Are they for everyone, I don't think so. I've had Docs since the early early 90s, 1990 I think. Different colors, always a boot. Some steel toe, some composite toe electrical safety, but my faves have always been the 1460 8 hole.

Curious... why not make the boots even better and add a shank when the leather filler was installed and why was it not converted to a Goodyear welt?

Yeah i agree, otherwise what they did was good, sewed in a mid sole can replace soles easy now, but why no shank ? @@themisunderstoodgorilla7030 pretty sure the Made In England line still has beechwood shanks, but thats only their top-of-the-standard line of boots, and when you get to the $220 price range, just get Solovairs. They have an in-house resoling service where you can get an original sole put back on (also an option to change between standard and "commando soles" which is a more combat boot-esque sole that comes with some of their boots).

Yeah pretty much hey, go up to a $400 boot and you get a leather midsole, steel shank, cork foot bed and a good year welt standard. Doc martens are a cheap boot and most cobblers know this hence they aren't going to invest the extra time and effort to put a cork midsole, shank etc etc as the cost of the repair would far outweigh the cost of a brand new Doc marten boot lol

Personally I hate them when they're new.. There's more character when they're worn.. I have no issues with the resole either.. The point isn't to try and bring them back to factory new.. You're never going to fix or hide all those years of mileage. . If I had found a boot maker back in the 90's when I wore out my first pair, I would've kept them and had them resoled. Watching all these videos gives me some regret about it... . I do wish the vibram sole was a bit thinner.. I hate the "platform" effect you get with thicker soles..

Why would it be harder for broads? It's sexist to say chicks can't cobble. Lol

As a mechanic. I would die the boot and do the repairs before the sole and stitching. Just makes sense. I would have made the lady redo mine…

ok so i was taking off my doc martens earlier today and i noticed the back stitching (closer to the bottom of the shoe) on the back part that is under the tag was ripped.. the stitching seems to have come loose and broken off and now the back part has a hole between the back strip and the rest of the show on the side vertically. what do i do? try to glue it myself or get them repaired? they're also brand new like a month old and i've only worn them maybe 5 - 7 times total

Call Dr Marten customer service. They will replace them as long as you have some type of proof of purchase

The double stitching is ugly. Should have removed the original and replaced with new yellow.

Not a proper restoration .. it is using generic soles. Good job, but it wouldn’t be happening to any of my Docs .. some of us ARE expecting our boots to look original ..

My mum has a very damaged pair, but they're 14 eyelets so I don't even think they can be fixed (they don't sell them anymore cause they're "nazi" boots)
