How Drug Smugglers Won At Le Mans

An 80s / Outrun / Synthwave style mini documentary about the Whittington brothers. Three pot smuggling race drivers that had a go at one of the hardest races on the planet - the 24 hours of Le Mans. (yes yes Indy 500, Monaco, I hear you). This is the rather bizarre story behind how they won it - but also how they got to participate in it in the first place. I hope you all enjoy it!
I have been a fan of this outrun / synth / retrowave & miami / vice city / 80s style for quite some time, so I had an absolute blast making this video!

Just a heads up, the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans was won by a Mclaren F1 GTR in the GT1 category, ahead of the prototypes. It's at least as much of a production car as a Group 5 car.

I sent this to my grandpa, and this was his response: Ah yes, the Whittington family. They were taken away about the same time John Kaligen was racing out of Howell. We weren't sure where John got all his money either. John Mills who stored and maintained the car always said when money was needed it would show up. Kaligen was son of a Greek business man unknown. John was a good driver and very likeable, ready to work at any time. He spun and hit backward making him instantly quadriplegic. Started a Surf Shop in Florida from a wheelchair. Far more than you needed to know, sorry about that. Memories.

Fun Fact: When Porsche restored the 935 that the whittington's put on the pole (with a quali lap thst set a record which stood for almost a decade) and won le mans with that year they found a strange cutout built into the front clip that wasn't in the original design papers. Being somewhat perplexed porsche's engineers called up kremer racing asked too speak with klaus ludwig (who is now a high up in the team) too inquire as to why it was there. Ludwig responded with: "oh yeah that's where we hid the nitrous bottle".

Is there any source on the story of the sandwich-belt? I'd like to know more, since the story as reported by a magazine at the time is that he managed to shorten the belt and get it back to the pits with that.

Haha, a lovely story and given the size of a 'Baguette' even a halfshaft snack would have been possible. What I know from the Kremer files sounds different though. They had a reserve belt onboard and a quick repair course had been held before the race. He changed it, it flew off. Kremer invented the idea of cutting the alternator belt and fixing it with tape. That worked good enough to work the injection pump and limp back to the box. The rest is, as they say, history. Btw. Jacky Ickx in one of the dominating 936s was disqualified for outside help with, guess what, changing the belt.

@@howistoast In 1981 for the Brazilian Grand Prix he backed a local Colombian driver named Ricardo Londoño (who was also a friend or acquaintance of his) for the team "Ensign Racing". The car for that round had a sponsor on it just called "Colombia", but it was very short lived because he broke early into a corner in front of Keke Rosberg in a practice session and Keke complained about his driving, that and also Bernie Ecclestone doing some digging on the strange sponsor and discovering that the business had ties to Pablo Escobar, Londoño wasn't granted a super license so he didn't qualify or race. But Londoño had a motorsports career in other series' backed by suspicious Colombian companies, possibly owned Pablo Escobar and a dealership in Cali, Colombia (Cali cartel?), raced in IMSA, Can-Am, Formula Two. Post-racing he went back to Colombia and was involved with the cartels and was shot/murdered in 2009.

1) Is there some source for that sandwich & belt story (that isn't another KZfaq video)? Motorsport Magazine post-race story from 1979 says there was spare belt in the car and Don managed to eventually fix it. 2) Landing delivery planes on the Road Atlanta straight happened "allegedly" so probably untrue. They did land their WWII planes on the race track when arriving purely as a showmanship. ps. I would have posted two links but YT hates links in comments.
@howistoast
@howistoast 2 жыл бұрын
hey deggis, thank you for your comment! 1) Unfortunately I can't give you much in terms of sources for the sandwich story, as I have only heard of that from a friend (who himself is a fan of IMSA and sportscar racing in general), and somebody else who mentioned it on youtube. It wasn't the best of sources and I probably should have given that disclaimer during the video, so I am sorry for that! 2) As for point two, yes I have heard that they were landing their planes there as a stunt once, however I found the same story about the delivery planes corroborated in multiple articles - so I figured that it was probably true. It's always difficult when you research and write these videos - as you of course want to be as thorough as possible - but it's basically never absolutely 100% clear what had actually happened. Mostly it's a 3 out of 5 sources say XY on topic Z. One of those three say WXY on topic Z. Another one says X but only allegedly Y on topic Z. And so on and so forth. In the next couple of days I'll ask my friend where he got it from and look further into that and the other story myself! I'll make a pinned comment with a disclaimer regarding the nature of the sources if I can't find any more than I got now (i.e. that they are alleged / anecdotal). Again, sorry for not being able to give you more right now but thanks for your comment and for holding me to a higher standard!
