The show aired on the CBS network from 1960 to 1968. It took place in the fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina, which was reportedly based on Andy Griffith’s hometown of Mount Airy, North Carolina. Many of the show’s cast members went on to play other roles over the years that followed but each of them would be best remembered for their parts on the show. Some even went on to other iconic roles, like Happy Days’ Richie Cunningham for Ron Howard and Three’s Company’s Mr. Furley for Don Knotts. But their time in The Andy Griffith Show cast would stay with them until the end. Given that the show went off the air over 50 years ago, it’s reasonable to expect that most of The Andy Griffith Show cast members have died since. All but one of the cast members have passed away in the intervening years but many of them lived for several decades after the show’s end.
Only one cast member died during the show’s run, an event that had an impact on everyone in The Andy Griffith Show cast. Many members of the show’s cast remained friends afterward, and some went on to share the screen together in later shows, like Andy Griffith’s procedural drama Matlock.
While the show has been out of production for over 50 years, it has played in syndication almost non-stop ever since it ended. This means new generations can rediscover the show and they all get to enjoy its small-town friendliness and crazy characters. Make sure you click like and subscribe to the Facts Verse channel below so you don’t miss any of our upcoming videos.

All the characters were very good, in their own way , but Andy Griffith was like a father, a friend, a guardian angel , a counselor and many things to me. These last two years with covid and what it did to some of my relationships has been very very difficult and I find myself watching Andy Griffith for some Solace and therapy. Andy was unique. So warm and friendly. He just plain made you feel good .Still does .

Back in the day when I had many tough days I’d come home and watch Andy Griffith. A respite from the modern reality. Without it I think I might have gone nuts. My favorite episode is the one with Malcolm Tucker, the stranded motorist. A big city guy forced to spend a moment in a different world. And he finds peace.

I have to say that probably my favorite character was Briscoe Darling played by Denver Pyle. I loved all the main characters and if I had to pick one, it would be Opie. He was the real deal of a boy in that generation and such a natural actor. Also among my favorites were Otis Campbell, Malcolm Marriweather and Mr. McBeevee (one of my favorite episodes). There were so many great characters on that show, each one bringing his or her own wonderful personality traits to add such great and varied color to the show. There will never be a show that comes close to the wholesome and delightfully entertaining quality of the Andy Griffith Show.

I didn't Google the one who played the politician Howard Sprague or the cast members who played the Darlings because it wasn't that big of a deal. Unfortunately, Denver Pyle passed away; and he was fun to watch. There was that but who played Ernest T. Bass also. He's another one I didn't bother with. As far as the Darling family cast members there's that young girl who's probably still alive, and it's hard to say about the ones who played her brothers and the guy she wound up marrying on the show.

I loved them all. They were all important to make the show so good. But when Barney left the show it changed. It was not the same. Opie was a natural. Its still the best show on tv in my opinion.

Excellent video but missing a few. I have all seasons. I don’t watch television, I watch my dvds of Andy. I go to sleep with him on and if I wake up in the middle of the night and it’s off, I sleepingly hit the on button and go right back to sleep. My 6 yo granddaughter is very familiar with the shows and the casts. I’ll let you in on a secret. I’ve been watching Andy faithfully when I stop watching television, in 1992. Loved the video.

The real reason Mayberry was a place that was happy all the time is because no one was married. Andy, Aunt Bea, Barney, Floyd, Howard, Goober, Gomer, Sam, Ernest T Bass, The Darlin family, Helen, Thelma Lou, Clara and of course Opie were all single! The only married person in Mayberry was Otis and he stayed drunk all the time! Mystery solved!

Michael, you are true philosopher. Hysterically funny commemt. Brilliant. "Everyone's happy, ( on the show) because no one is married." SO true. I've been divorced almost 40 years. I will be 80 next year. I was never happy until I left that mean bSOB .... 40 years ago. Andy Griffith was a bully. Sad, but true.

Frances Bavier’s last name is pronounced Baa-vee-yay. Similar to Jackie Kennedy’s maiden name Bouvier pronounced Boo-vee-yay. Ron Howard isn’t the only surviving cast member. Betty Lynn who played Thelma Lou, Elinor Donahue who played Ellie Walker, Maggie Mancuso Peterson (hope I got her name right) who played Charlene Darling, Rodney Dillard who played one of the Darling boys, and at least some of the child actors like Keith Thibodeaux who played Johnny Paul Jason

Can't believe you left out Otis Campbell (Hal Smith) and Ellie Walker (Elinor Donahue) from this list! Elinor was actually my favorite character. Such a lovely lady with a beautiful smile. She and Griffith however were one awkward-looking couple, though. Andy was about as romantic as a wet sponge.

Hard to pick a favorite although Opie being so young and watching him grow-up he's most favorable along with Griffith. Bittersweet to hear about these folks' death but also interesting to hear of their lives post TAGS. Recently watched all the re-runs of the show. Also just now watched your Betty Lynn video. I imagine also still living are the other child actors like the kid who played a runaway cowboy and the girl who was Junior Miss Mayberry. She played in a couple of episodes. There were a couple of other child actors like the boy who moved the Sheriff's car, and the boy who played Sam's son in the last couple of episodes of the show, and Clint who was Ron's brother in real life. It would be interesting to see a video of interviews with them about what it was like for them to be in TAGS.

I lived in Manteo, NC in the early 2000's where Andy Griffith had retired. Locally, he was known as a grumpy, caustic old man projecting an image of entitlement. While he may have been a talented actor, his later years didn't follow his good ole boy country persona.
