“I was really scared. The noise during the quake was beyond normal, it was horrifying. I could hear the skate racks falling down, I could hear the entrance door going askew. Clash-clash-clash-clash! All the doors in the place flew open with a loud bang! "No, wait! We're screwed!"... I was crying, seriously. As the first wave of the quake was nearing the end I was feeling relieved. But soon after there was an incredibly loud clashing noise. When I looked around, the whole wall next to the rink had slided sideways. "Bang!" It didn't happen during the earthquake. It was right when the quake was weakening, and just when I thought it was going to stop. Takumi-kun was saying, "this could be the end." I was just repeating, "no no no no!"... But soon I was feeling a little calmer. When we evacuated the building, I was on my hands and knees. My legs were so stiff they didn't move. I couldn't put the edge covers on my skates when I escaped. I walked on concrete with bare blades so they were damaged badly. I took them off thinking "oh no," but I didn't want to leave my skates there so I held them in my arms... It was cold outside. I was only wearing short sleeved practice clothes, and it started snowing. I had left my Team Japan jacket at the rink, along with all my belongings and my regular shoes. There were aftershocks even after that, and many people were evacuating the building. The snow became a blizzard. While Takumi-kun and I were trembling and wondering what to do, other people who came out of the same rink told us what happened there. I was shocked. The water pipes above the ceiling had all broke and the whole place was flooded. The pipes around the rinks had broken too. As we stood there not knowing what to do, the coaches went back and brought our bags to us, and we were able to wear our jackets... That's how we barely survived. My family were all in different places at the time the earthquake happened. I was at the rink practicing, my sister was on her way home from the same rink (she had a part-time job there), my mother was at home and my dad was at work. I think my sister was the one who kept her cool throughout. She rushed back to the rink and calmed me down, and then went back to pick my mother up from our house. The three of us were able to evacuate together. In the street the telephone poles had fallen to the ground, the manhole lids had popped off and there was water leaking everywhere... There was no electricity so it got darker and darker. All I could do was frown. Our house was not so damaged, the bathroom walls had crumbled a little and there were cracks in the walls. Everything in the shelves had fallen out and the piano had toppled over. When I learned about the situation I really felt that this was a big crisis. However, since we didn't have any electricity, we still had no information on the full impact of the earthquake. We settled down that night at the evacuation center. My dad couldn't come home from work that day, so the three of us spent the night in a very small compartment about the size of two tatamis [about the size of two sofas]. We only had one blanket to share so we huddled up together...it was really cold. There was only one light bulb powered by gasoline, and there was no heating in place. It was really, really cold. I was even more shocked when I woke up the next day. I was thinking that the earthquake had only hit the inlands. When the newspaper was delivered to the evacuation center in the morning, I finally learned what really happened. I spent four days in the evacuation center, staring at the ceiling because there was nothing else to do. I've been thinking to myself, "I can't skate at a time like this. No, it shouldn't be allowed in this situation. Do I even need to skate from now on?” After that, surviving everyday was hard. We ate one or half of a rice ball each day. I would have dreams of me being in that rink, and it would shake as if kept repeating the earthquake in my dreams. It felt selfish of me to want to skate when everyone was suffering. I couldn't say it out loud.” -Yuzuru Hanyu

This honestly made me bawl. I will always remember that day, that very moment, when i turned on the TV in my family home's living room, and saw the news of the earthquake and tsunami. What was happening in Japan was all over the news here in India, and I'd expect the rest of the world, too. I remember my grandpa (who has passed away since) was sitting right beside me as we watched the devistating news in a sort of horrified wonder. I don't even remember anything else about that day. Yet that moment of turning on the TV, sitting with my grandpa on the sofa, and watching the sorrowful news, is one of the most vivid memories of my life. RIP to those who didn't make it. 💔 😥

This guy's whole life could be made into a movie. Earthquakes, injuries, bullying (only by a jealous person)... He always pushes himself too hard. He'd injured himself earlier and continued to skate in the Olympics while being on painkillers. He even skated after crashing with injuries that need stitches. JUST PLEASE REST FOR A WHILE.

Hanyu donated so much money to the Tohoku recovery efforts, even 7 years after the disaster. All of his Olympics winning money (Sochi and PyeongChang), royalties from his autobiographies, photo book and DVD; excess money generated by his 2 parades in Sendai, auctions (a pair of his old skating boots auctioned for 8 million Yen last March), etc. The man is a literal goal.

I didnt know who he was before this olympics, am not really interested in figure skating or any winter olympics really. But my heart goes out to him. When I watch his performances, even without knowing his story, you can feel his heart, his effort, his joy even. Watching this video made me cry, sincerely, it touches my heart. His passion, sincerity, his grief, his success. and I think this is the reason why we watch the olympics. I wish him well, all the best and I heard that he went through the olympics even with an injury, so I hope he recovers well. He deserves his fans.

He reminded me of a quote I love: "Don't let circumstances control you. You control the circumstances." The challenges and hardships he went through, they did not shy him away from pursuing what he loved, but instead empowered him and made him even stronger, as a skater and as a person. Honestly, I'm really proud to be born in the same generation as this man. He's a true gem to the world.

His performance not only included all of his efforts but included his thoughts for his country's people and all his feelings for them. Yuzuru is the best of the best and deserves to be crowned champion. He skates not only for himself, but for his country. He brings hope into people's lives. Appreciation and gratitude for Yuzuru here. Fun fact: did you know after the earthquake, Yuzu had a nickname of 'The Hope of Sendai'

What makes him so precious is not just his skills. To me skills are something that can be built up mechanically. My feeling is that the result does not always reflect the effort behind (as it showed again this time in Bejing). There are harder-working ones who could not even qualify for the Olympics. That said, I understand that the result is always important to every athlete. If you do not care about winning, why compete in the first place? However, winning for what is the question that sets them apart and I have seen far too many athletes who seek only for fame and money. I feel sad seeing the media always overpraises those self-benefiting, arrogant and ungrateful ones. Compared to them, Hanyu is almost like the conscience of sportsmanship.

*AHHH, I’M CRYING AGAINNN* Just what an incredible, beautiful human being he is. Not only is he one of the best figure skaters of all time, he's also one of the kindest, most caring people out there. Basically he's beautiful inside and out. From the earthquake to hate from antis to his multiple injuries, he still persevered through all of that with his beautiful smile and won gold for Japan, TWICE. The fact that he's getting more and more talented, just amazes me. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be into figure skating like i am now. see this is why he is and will always be one of, if not the greatest figure skater in history. his artistry, flexibility and gracefulness is just something that can't be rivaled and let's not forget that whilst quads and jumps are important, there is also an artistic element to figure skating. 1.38 was amazing. GO YUZU

That's the reason why I love him. He's really dedicated and he really puts the effort to win a gold medal for his country, the pride for his parents (family). Even though anything happened to him, he never use the excuse and give up on his dream. I really like this kind of person. We will always support Yuzuru Hanyu.

I cry every time I hear and read his story. The amount perseverance and courage and mental strength he has to not only face the earthquake but also shut down those who questioned him if he would be able to come back and defend his title. This man is strong, brave and someone who many will look up to for years and years to come. He really is someone you can call an icon. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for him and his career. I know one day he will retire and there will be a hole in the skating world and the ice will miss him. But his name, his legacy and what he accomplished will be for the records. So much love Yuzuru Hanyu. And thank you for showing us the beauty and the grace of figure skating. Thank you. 😭❤️❤️

I love his gala performance in 2016 Worlds. It's in honor of the victims in tsunami. And it is superb, beautiful, emotional, captivating, perfect.... Even his blades are performing. When he skates he is in the other world. And as a human being he deserves every appreciation from his fans
