VPN will make it harder to track you and your location but if you're using an open wi-fi network regardless of encryption you're still sending out the data and anyone can see that if you're hacking your database or network.

You can just install random tools onto any distro. Kali comes with several pre installed packages that allows the tools on it to work properly. Unless you’re experienced and know what you need and are willing to go around and turn whatever Linux into a Pentesting distro, go for it.

Even if you found the correct one they often are sold with the wrong chipsets now. Use a Panada Wireless one, they come with the correct chipsets for Packet Injection along with monitor mode.

If someone is trying to see where you're sending requests, instead of youtube theyd see your vpn's IP. Now the MITM attack on a maccas/starbucks wi-fi: You ------> Attacker -------> Gateway -------> VPN -------> Internet -----> Website/Service This happens because the attacker is on the same network as you so he is using the same gateway. This means that you're vulnerable to any activity performed on that local network.

While a VPN protects all traffic (including things like skype, online game sessions), a proxy only protects your traffic through a web browser (and sometimes torrents) . WPA uses a different style of security than what Cain was made for. Basically, the network wasn't going to handshake with you because you don't have the correct credentials. Just load up a VM with Kali, get a wifi adapter with packet injection and mon, and keep deauthing until you get the full passcode and eventually login and start packet sniffing the traffic.
