Emily’s insomnia struggle began around four months after the birth of her baby. Even though her daughter was sleeping well, Emily was finding it really difficult to fall asleep. She started to get nervous and anxious as her level of exhaustion intensified.
When the medication prescribed by her doctor didn’t work, Emily started to get really concerned. She started researching solutions but found that the more she tried to fix her sleep, the more difficult it became and the more stressful things got.
Emily’s anxiety intensified to the point where the arrival of bedtime would lead to a racing heart and a sense of panic. It felt like her body was preparing for a marathon while she wanted to get a good night of sleep so she could be the mother she wanted to be for her daughter.
Emily’s transformation began when she changed her approach to sleep and her response to insomnia.
She reduced the amount of time she allotted for sleep to more closely match the amount of sleep she was getting on an average night. She started to do something more pleasant whenever she found herself struggling with being awake at night.
She stopped calculating the amount of sleep she was getting each night and she began to look at sleep with less judgement and more neutrality.
Instead of trying to fight or avoid her racing heart and the anxiety, she surrendered to them - she acknowledged their presence and allowed them to exist.
And, she committed to doing things that mattered, even after difficult nights and even when she felt exhausted.
Emily surrendered to whatever might happen each night - and this freed her from the pressure she was putting on herself to generate a certain amount or type of sleep and allowed her to move away from the struggle that came from trying to control her thoughts and feelings.
Today, Emily goes to bed sometime around 11 at night and wakes naturally around seven in the morning. Sleep is no longer a concern or a focus. Her focus now is on living the life she wants to live.

Your channel came into my feed today by no accident. Emily's story is mine except she caught on quicker than I did. Mine has been almost 40 years. I might have a small problem with control and safety. 😉. This program sounds a lot like Alanon which has helped me tremendously. I'm going to give it a go because my best thinking hasn't worked. I loved your comment to Emily about kindness and compassion for ourselves. God bless you for what you are doing. We recover when we realize we are not alone.

What I have figured after 3 years of brutal insomnia: the less you care, the better you sleep pls do not get sold on all the tracking apps, watches rings, whoops if you are already struggling with sleep. Sleep is the same thing as breathing, it is going to happen either you want it or not :))

I believe you are onto something there! I think we'll always care whenever problems or concerns are present - maybe what matters more is how we respond because our response often determines our level of struggle and how much power and influence these challenges have over our lives. I have a feeling you'll really identify with episode 61 of the podcast: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9-Gi86ct5umpnU.html

From person to person, the insomnia struggle is often so similar! This also means that transformation is always possible, regardless of how difficult the struggle might be at the current time.

Hey Coach, I have a question about this Sleep State Misconception A few days ago, I was tired and fell asleep around 12Am but kinda felt like I was "awake" until 4Am but I did manage to sleep and dream after that . But could the issues be also loud noises? Cause there are frogs squeaking next our home at midnight.

Ok I just wish if Martin answers me …. I have insomnia many years I dealt with very good I slept normally for years… but I don’t know what happening to me these days! It has been a month and half now and I sleep well like for two days and then I don’t sleep at all zero sleep! Is this normal? Should I keep what I have learned in your course? I believe it will help but I hate this situation it’s weird why I sleep normally for days and it happens again and again?

I know how you feel, What helped me is just letting of the fact that I have insomnia, even good sleepers sleep good only 80% of the time, so it is normal to not sleep sometimes, what we insomniacs do is we try and fix something that doesn't need to be fixed
