I remember how these funk rhythms confused me so much. Why? The muted ghost notes. IMO the advice "just add ghost notes in between" is really what makes it way more difficult than it is because when you hear them you tend to ignore them and just concentrate on the melody and that is the real issue. When you play them you absolutely need to be aware where they are and what rhythm they are in - just play them like regular notes. One needs to unlearn to hear just the melody and hear the ghost notes between.

Funk is the most fun. One day our band was sitting around after practice. I randomly started slapping the guitar, some rob scallon style slap stuff. Then my friend quickly joined in with some groovy chords and rhythms like yours. Our drummer quickly caught on, and did some sexy hi hat action with a consistent kick on the on beats, and our bassist pulled out a nasty slappy bass line. As soon as our keyboardist pulled out a funky bluesy synth solo, we were in the zone.

Eternally grateful to you for this video as an older person. This is my favorite guitar lesson I've ever had. I now see I would be so much farther along as a guitarist if I had known how to study & had a good teacher when I was young. I had no help, & wasted a lot of time/ energy without answers. I was even feeling sick lately, with stomach stress when I thought of guitar, & wish I had not had so many setbacks, feeling my whole life is passing, etc (& I even studied a bit at my local college, with a teacher who said, "you may go the whole semester & never learn this' rather than caring enough to want to actually help, when worship music was always one of the most significant aspects of my life & I hoped to serve people through music. I've been limited in what I could bring to others). This brought me joy & some relief & a ray of hope.

I think that's actually a pretty great exercise to build your funk fundamentals. It'll be frustrating for beginners to learn to whack the bass note and mute the other strings for 3 months, but it's pretty much the right place to start. And the steps afterwards are also in a pretty good difficulty progression. I'll try it myself !

I unintentionally taught myself funk guitar. I always found the "ghost notes" effective as a rhythm guitarist in a band without a drummer/percussionist. The key is in your strumming hand. Just gotta keep it in the pocket. Its very much like the concept of being a drummer. The little licks and notes you add along with the strumming fills are just like drum fills. At least that's how I see it and it's always helped me.

@@MarcelVLafonde From the moment he starts playing at least, it's one take, but it's not too long and he has been doing it for years, practicing a lot, doing it a lot. He does make tiny errors like forgetting to play the E and in older videos he'd not always keep to 4 beats or the tempo in between playing. It's easier with drums to tell you where the 1st beat is and what the tempo is. Well... less insanely difficult. Talking and playing is as difficult as playing the piano and singing and some people will just not be able to do it without programming every note and combination in your brain as a unit and that just takes forever. I'm sad to say I'm one of those people, which is why, as a singer songwriter I learned to play rhythm guitar.
