Almost every western european starts with: "Bulgaria was a good surprise", like u guys think u r goin' to the jungle or somethin'? One Spaniard even asked me if we have water to drink.. left me speechless. Anyway glad u had good time in Bulgaria, but some of those stereotypes are just.. uhh!

Any Bulgarians out there that can give me a little bit of advice,I'm looking at buying in Bulgaria with my silly almost insulting budget there's loads of property I've seen but two Areas I like one is Elena the other ribarista the last one being mostly out of my budget...the region I like is veilenko tarnovo I think that's how it's spelt can't check because I'm typing...any thoughts of them and any region that I've got to look at..for me it's more about a good patch of land to grow food house comes second... Bulgaria could give me a life I'll never have in the UK....please any information would be great....

Hi Aly, Thanks for the Sofia videos. I stopped in Sofia for a week on my way to Athens last month. I loved it so much that I'm going back for a month in September. I want to see much more of the country this time. Thank you so much for your channel. You have no idea how much you have inspired me. I spent twenty years of my life as a single parent and when my youngest daughter left for college I fell into a rut of loneliness, depression and heavy drinking. Your travel blogs brought me back to life. So far this year, I've been to Barcelona, Tarragona, Sicily, Sofia and Athens, staying in hostel dorms and BnB's. The most exciting thing is that I'm leaving for SE Asia for four months in November. I can't wait. Not bad for a sixty-five-year-old man who had become a lonely recluse. The biggest joy I get from my travels come from the people I've met and the friends I've made along the way. So once again, thank you, thank you thank you. God knows how many other people you have inspired with your sense of adventure, your quirky sense of humour and your zest for life. May you have many more happy adventures to come, Sean Bracken

I went from romania to greece in march and we stopped at rila monastery since it was on the way. Oh my god it was so beautiful! When we entered deaper into bulgaria it started snowing and when we arrived at the monastery it got such a nostalgic and quiet feeling to it since there was nearely nobody around. I love visiting places off tourist season

Momchil Kutev i'm glad you like it, i love your country sooo much! We passed quite a lot of abbandoned villages where nature took over the place again and they gave a symilar feeling. I feel like bulgaria is coming to life again, but so much of it was abandoned, but i think it just shows how your country stayes beautiful no matter what, and we romanians sure love our neighbour

travel here yes. moving... think more about it. it's a great place, but a lot of things here are terrible, and it could be hard to get used to if you are used to more specific standards. Politics here is terrible and corrupt. I know it's corrupt basically everywhere, but at least in most places things get done and you see some improvement over the years. Here nothing gets done. the improvements take twice as long if not more compared to other "similar" countries, like Romania for example. what i mean is moving here should not be taken lightly. a lot of people move here and love it. but there are certain things they have to "trow away"

Cool Video! I have friends in Bulgaria who very kindly drove me to the Rila Monastery and it was so so beautiful!! I got to take lots of nice pictures and lovely video shots! Regarding budgets, I'm at the Black Sea at the moment and because if its highly tourist related nature it is more expensive than the rest of Bulgaria, but you can always find cheaper snack places or the (rare) local restaurant, but it is a lovely place to be!!

Hi! As a local I'd recommend spending more time in Varna and definitely going to Veliko Tarnovo as it is the old capital and is extremely beautiful! I, myself haven't been to Plovdiv but I've heard nothing but amazing things about it. If you'd like to visit the north, I'd say go to Ruse, my English friends said they liked it the best, it is known as the little Vienna. Overall, I'd say spend more time outside the capital as people tend to be nicer, too! Enjoy your visit!

For those who would like to visit Bulgaria and be more close to the nature I recommand you to go to Rila, Pirin and Rhodopi moutains. Accomodation should cost not more that 30LV-40LV for a couple and if you're a group it's even cheaper (better check for private guesthouses than a hotel. You can easly find something once you're there). My top 3 is the Rila lakes (18LV for the lift) and the monaster, Rafting on Struma river (50LV) and the thermal pools of Sapareva banya (from 10 to 30LV depending of the options you're choosing-SPA, indoor, outdoor pools). Sometimes it's cheaper to go and eat ouside rather that buy stuff and cook by yourself, especially it the small places. Enjoy!

My husband is from Bulgaria. His travel tip is: if you have a Bulgarian friend bring them with you and let them do all the talking. He said it used to be that they'll charge you more if you're a tourist for some things because you don't know any better. He's not sure if it's the same now, this was 10 years ago. But he told me that if we ever go to Bulgaria, he'll do ALL the talking, haha. Great video!

@IcoKirov 6 жыл бұрын
there is still some truth to that. but not as it was 10 years ago. things have improved in that regard greatly for the last 10 years. at least for the standard things. like you won't get cheated or charged more in a store. most taxis won't cheat you now as well (the ones who still cheat - they cheat everyone not just the tourists, although a tourists would be cheated for more money i guess). but their prices are shown on the windshield and inside as well, if you see their charging machine is not working just get out. if it is working it would charge you whatever it says as a price on the windshield (plus a tip :D ). you won't be cheated in restaurants as well. you could get cheated in clubs mostly. especially if they are at the sea. there are still places that are "especially for tourists" and charge a lot more. basically they make their high prices legal and don't let Bulgarians in... but again, they are not as much as they used to be 10 years ago. nowadays most prices are clearly shown everywhere, and it says if it is in bulgarian levs (the abbreviation on the price list is lv, лв in Cyrillic or bgn ) or if it is in euros. but almost everywhere prices are in lv. the price could be in euro only in giftshops and such.

I'm amazed at Bulgarians thinking their country is cheap. I'm half bulgarian, half greek - born in Greece but we spend great deal of time in Bulgaria and I know what I'm talking about. Bulgaria remains one of the most expensive countries in the EU..... for locals. While prices in, say, Germany, are twice higher than those in Bulgaria, the average monthly salary in Germany is 4 to 6 higher than that in Bulgaria.. So, if a quality white bread in Bulgaria is 1 Euro, to Germans that would equal to 5-6 Euro - in Germany. And last time I was in Germany, bread was dirt cheap. On a side note, a lot of supermarket chains in Germany are often cheaper than Bulgaria. LIDL for example.

Did a lot of people speak english there or were there a lot of signs in english? Also what is the tipping culture there? Are people expected to tip tour guides and at restaurants?
@PsychoTraveller
@PsychoTraveller 7 жыл бұрын
Tipping at least 10% is expected yes :) Plus most people can understand basic English :)

Tipping is not expected, it's just nice to do. It's not like in the USA where you must tip. If you dont tip nobody thinks you did something wrong, it's common not to tip (if you don't have money or all sorts of reasons). The bill is the bill the tip is like extra ''thank you'' to the staff...

In general, compared to most places in Western Europe, Bulgaria is cheaper to go out. In a supermarket, the prices are roughly comparable to a cheap supermarket in the West.

This couple stays up. They're living with parents and sharing good advice. I'm also making a vlog. "How I live in my own country" :-)) I'm not surprised that the English are escaping from their homeland. Wicked weather, bad and expensive meals, bad public services, vanished infrastructure.

To visit Bulgaria seems very reasonable. However, you are going there from England. What would be the cost of travel to Bulgaria from the US? I suspect it would probably be more than the rest of the trip - doubled. I hope I am wrong about that.

go on expedia dot com there are flights and you can check for flights only or flight + hotel or flight + car it's depend from where in us you are from NY to Sofia you can find tickets from 400-600 $ and above if are in Cali from LA (NY+ 100-150$) but it's also depend on season . if you fly on Black Sea there are airports in Varna and airport in Burgas. If you want to land on center of Bulgaria you get flight to Plovdiv.

Those restaurant prices sound like the bare minimum one might spend in a Sofian suburb. A normal three course meal plus a bevarage or two for a single person 10-20 euro.

George Smith I ate chicken wings and 2 pieces of bread and cost me 2.50 Euro in Thompson village. Water =.30 euro Depends ! How smart you are with your money. Where you stay and what your preferences are. But if you really want to see something I suggest going to eat in small villages pubs- so to speak. There is cheaper and the old folks are very sweet and helpful!

Dont put all your eggs in one basket. Not all live in a big city or are stupid enough to pay city bills and taxes. Also, most old school Bulgarians cook their own food because it is cheaper and healthier. I live comfortably on 300 dollars a month!

Good dinner in Sofia for 10 leva ? Lol you can get some peanuts and a coke for that money...sorry but if you wanna go to a restaurant and get 1 salad 1 steak with fries and mushroom sauce 1 piece of cake for desert with 4 cokes and 4 rakias will cost you about 60 or 70 leva. It's not that cheap. Well if you eat like 1 subway sandwich (big one) for dinner I guess 10 leva will fit you perfectly. Shopska salad which is the most common one in Bulgaria starts from 4.50 to 10 leva, 1 steak with fries for example will cost you from 8.50 up to 16 leva or even more depends on the place you're sitting in, 1 piece of cake cost from 2 to 6 leva. 1 small 250 ml coke will cost you from 1.80 to 2 leva. and 1 rakia will cost you about from 3 to 6 leva. 4x2+4x3+10+6=8+12+10+6=36 AT BEST. If you wanna get some bread or else it will cost you a bit more. And that is cheap version of this menu, it can cost even more if the restaurant is nicer, especially in Sofia's center. So no, you cannot get a good dinner for 10 leva, you can get a kinda decent one if you buy like a local burger from a garage with coke. It will cost you about 5 to 6 leva and it's delicious, yet thats not a "good" dinner.
