Everything in newfoundland has to be shipped over on a boat, that's why things are a lot more expensive, you're shopping in st johns which is the largest center, so typically its cheaper out there. The smaller communities things are a lot more expensive.

I live in Nova Scotia at the very southwestern tip. Love it. I lived in Newfoundland a few months back in 03. Prices in Canada are definitely higher especially in areas like Newfoundland, Labrador, the Northwest Territories or any area that is extremely rural. Everything has to be shipped in by air or truck via ferry. There are also some things you just can't get in my area of the world Nova Scotia and I never saw in Newfoundland too. I really miss Artichokes. I was brought up in Florida but adopted from here. I moved back in 08. If you're shopping in Canada on the US dollar, you really save a lot but it's tough on the Canadian dollar for sure.

It sounds like you have a deep appreciation for the beauty and uniqueness of the Canadian provinces, especially the maritime areas like Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. You're absolutely right that the cost of living can vary significantly in different regions, particularly in more remote and rural areas. The challenges of transportation and accessibility often play a big role in pricing. It's interesting how certain items can be hard to come by in certain places, reflecting the local availability and preferences. And yes, currency exchange rates can definitely impact the affordability of living and traveling in different countries. Thanks for sharing your insights and experiences with us! It's always fascinating to learn about the nuances of different regions and how they contribute to the overall culture and way of life.

It's true, there's so much to see and explore, especially when you're taking the backroads and discovering hidden gems along the way. Lighthouses are such iconic and picturesque landmarks, and Nova Scotia is certainly blessed with its fair share of them. Even though three weeks might not seem like a lot, it sounds like you made the most of your time and captured some wonderful memories. Here's to more incredible journeys and lighthouse-filled explorations in the future! 🌊🗺️📸

Unless grown locally the produce spends two weeks in the back of a truck before it gets here so the fresh factor is long gone. Harvest season in the fall is the best time for fresh produce that is grown by Newfoundlanders and does not require long distance shipping.

@@theRTWguys no problem. Just simple geography. We are on the End of the line for shipping from anywhere west of here. Most of the produce that is shipped here (Especially farther away) is past the best before date when we buy it. Picking out the mouldy strawberries before the rest are spoiled is normal out of season when the produce has to travel across the continent and even from South America !!

What surprises me every time at the register is the “bottle” tax. When my children were young I liked to have juice boxes for them …in Newfoundland they charged bottle tax on EACH juice box in the 8 pack. The price of milk KILLED me…it was a always 2/$7.00 ( sale price)….that is $7 a gallon!!!!! Interesting in Newfoundland you cannot purchase gallon of milk but only half gallons. Big milk drinker here.

@@timcollum5015 I too live in a state with .05 cents deposit…on soda beer bottles or can. Newfoundland has it also on carton of juice, juice boxes ( size of a yogurt where 8 are in it…so adds bottle tax times 8 for the pack), there was more items that qualified than just beer/soda. I might be wrong but yogurt containers might be included too.

The booze is so expensive because of the tax! Interestingly, it makes the cost difference between bottom, middle, and (some) top shelf alcohol much smaller, so a lot more people opt for nicer stuff. I'm sorry to hear about your brother's health and the challenges you're facing regarding the cost of living and grocery prices in your area. It can be really frustrating and overwhelming when the cost of essentials like food is significantly higher than expected. Changes in prices can often be influenced by various factors such as location, transportation costs, and local economic conditions. It's unfortunate that these circumstances can impact your ability to comfortably stay in the area you're in. If you're finding it difficult to manage the cost of living, exploring budgeting strategies and seeking out resources in your community might be helpful. Additionally, considering alternative options and destinations that offer a more affordable living situation could provide some relief. Remember that your well-being is important, and making decisions that prioritize your health, financial stability, and overall quality of life is crucial. I wish you and your brother all the best during this challenging time. If you ever need more information or advice, feel free to ask.

fun fact about the no name brand is its the same as name brand even made in the same facility just cheaper tobacco can be sky high if you dont know where to buy it the gas station a pack of ciggerettes is $20 or i can buy a carton of 8 packs for $55 the indian reservation in ontario and bC manufacture them and the one in BC sells online tax-free so theres no federal punishment for smoking. and the transportation is only illegal if you're moving them to resell the reserve sells customer direct and wont sell more than 5 cartons at a time to prevent reselling what i dont think you're accounting for is the exchange rate and the fact its an island so the farry fee makes everything more expensive just like the terratories everything is so exspencive because its all flown in

You bring up some really interesting points! It's fascinating how some generic or no-name brands can be produced in the same facilities as well-known brands, offering similar quality at a lower price. And your insight about tobacco prices is enlightening - knowing where to buy can make a significant difference. The Indian reservation's approach of selling directly to customers and preventing reselling seems like a clever strategy. You're absolutely right about the exchange rate and the geographical challenges of living on an island. These factors can indeed contribute to higher costs, especially when items need to be imported or transported by ferry. It's a unique perspective that highlights the intricacies of cost of living and the various factors that come into play. Thanks for sharing this valuable insight! 🛒💡🌏
