Lewis and Evan explain how radios work in F1. During a session you hear radio messages between our drivers and their engineers, but what goes into getting these messages across? 🤔
Evan and Lewis explain how important those messages are and how they help the driver shape the best lap they can.

Riedel Intercom. Not quite your standard walkie talkies, but more like a conference call system. Operates on standard 1.9gHz to 2.5gHz freqs vs radios which would be in the megahertz bands.

Why do some block the names when touching the panels of the transmitter? Or is that the button to talk? So what are those knobs next to them then?

Yes, you can configure each button to be a call to another person or a conference (or special functions). You can press it to listen or speak to that group. The knobs are for volume control. Or for example the sidetone (0:50) controls how you here yourself. If you have headphones on you pretty much can not hear your surroundings including yourself. With sidetone you listen to your own mic to hear yourself speaking.

Why don't the engineers turn off the sensors by remote / by computer? Why does it have to be done by the driver? Is that a rule?
