I have asked the distance question several times including the Nazi on this channel who would not even respond to a personal email. That said I am going across I-70 this summer and my wife and I will be in two separate cars. I-70 is straight for 2000+ miles so for the most part line of sight. I was just hoping I could talk 10-15 if we got separated. No one in the radio world has ever talked between two autos on the interstate for they can't answer the question. I have had some say 1-2 miles. If I am going to spend $1,000 on two Wouxun 50 watt 1000's and can only get 1-2 miles , guess what? Yep I will use my cell. But I bet I can get a lot farther even in crappy weather. So I am going to make the purchase and test it. I finally started looking at GMRS seriously when I was regularly was able to reach a repeater located 60 miles away, and held conversations with a friend that lived 20 miles past the repeater. And you are completely correct about altitude, I live at sea level, but can see Mt Rainier from my place and have regularly intercepted conversations of climbing parties using small portable HT’s on the mountain over 70 miles away.. great video as always!! I just watched this and I love the way you answered this question. I use to have a few wireless stores and I was constantly explaining to people with complaints why their phone didn't ring or why they dropped a call, particularly when in a vehicle. It's amazing how some people thought these half watt phones at 850mhz should be able to connect all the time. Great Video.

I installed my radio (Midland MX-275) in my truck about a week ago and was listening to conversation between a couple of guys in a city about 40-45 miles (straight line) away. The repeater was in the same city on a hill, (they mentioned the neighborhood it was located) one of them was on a handheld because, first he said he was and second he was walking a bike path. There was static and only a couple of bars but I could fully understand them. I was on a elevated ridge, not in the valley. I was impressed.

You’re the best! I love all your videos! I come from an electronics background currently designing security systems. My father got me into shortwave radios when I was a kid and taught me how to build an fm transmitter which I made a little station for me and my friends. He had a GMRS radio and never got licensed but he could talk from his mobile car unit to our bass unit when he went to Los Angeles (25 miles from us).

Trying to dip my toes into the comms world and subbing because this is not only the most straight forward but also based video I’ve seen on gmrs😂

Fun fact did you know that Puerto Rico is only 100 miles long and 35 miles wide and there are over 200 repeaters. MY repeater is on one of the highest mountains in Puerto Rico and I have reached the repeater from practically the whole island with my 5 watt walkie talkie

On gmrs I got 50miles fars on my base station Midland mxt115 and I got 35miles mobile from my vehicle... I do a lot of test all the time even with my handhelds ppl need to do the work and find your fars 😆... Luv the videos keep them coming randy....

Funny, I frequently converse with other GMRS radio operators in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and even Alaska, using an inexpensive chinese 5w HHT, transmiting from central Arizona. Not sure how many 'fars' that is, but I'm pretty sure it's more than 6, or 11, or even 100!

Just found your vids a month ago and they crack me up! Anyway long time ham and GMRS licensed and it's all about your antenna and location. I've talked 40 miles simplex on 2 watts VHF, but I lived on a ridge in Denver, had a Diamond X510 antenna on a chimney mount with a Icom 7000 and was talking to a guy who had a similar quality set up. On 50 watts I could hit the Vail, Colorado Springs, and Kremmling repeaters. Since I've moved, on 50 Watts I can hit the Fort Collins and oddly, just smoke on simplex areas South and West of Parker. Location, location, location. I only moved 5 miles! Anyway, to I try to describe "How many fars" to to friends as a comparison to a good stereo system. Antennas are like the speakers, transceivers are like your amp/home entertainment system and your microphone is like your input... Think CD player/turntable/mp3 decoder etc. Location is exactly that.

We spoke at a distance of 107km (66.5 miles) in a straight line using two identical Baofeng GT-3TP handheld radio stations. No repeaters! Station no.1 was an altitude of 2544m and station no.2 was an altitude of 417m. It certainly works from an even greater distance because the sound quality was good.

I agree with you on the distance's you can transmit. I have a 10 element Beam antenna that I transmit from Tombstone, AZ to Silver City, NM 129 miles away to hit a repeater there.

I can talk further on my GMRS radio because I'm a licensed Ham Radio Operator....Slay Me !!! Good video. You're radio will talk as many fars as it will. One tip, keep the antenna vertical when talking and receiving, it does make a difference. Holding your radio sideways is Ghetto and Ghetto does not get fars or hot chicks. I can talk to a repeater in Niles, Michigan 70 miles away on the other side of Lake Michigan from my 30th floor rooftop in Chicago, using a $25 Baofeng HT. So height does make might.

I just spoke with a fellow gmrs newbie this afternoon and again tonight who was 110 miles away from the repeater that’s around 20 miles away from me which we thought was absolutely insane, his house is at the top of a 580’ tall hill and he was using a midland mxt400 set up as a base station and I was using my Wouxun kg-935g plus handheld!

I tried it today in good ole flat Florida. I was able to talk 2 miles on a 5ish watt BaoFeng with a 6 dBi Comet sumthingsumthingsumthing. This was from my Chevrolet 2500 talking to a Tram 1486 bolted to a 6 foot tall fence post connected to a BaoFeng 50 watt mobile sumthingsumthingsumthing. So the answer is... Blah Blah Blah.

I'm going to have to get me a ham license so I can critique your videos and tell you how wrong you must be, I have gotten my gmrs license thanks to you, but right now I'm just not smart enough to critique your videos without my ham license yet. 🤣 Great video Randy. Love your videos.

You are 100% correct Randy but I have surprised myself and talked through dirt with a 5W UV-5R and a Amp-U25 to an RT97 antenna on the roof of my house but that was only at about 2 1/4 miles. I'm fixing to put that repeater on a hill with a marvelous view of the Snake River Valley In the Boise area. I have a Jackery 1000 to power it but for starters, I won't be setting up the solar panels. I hope someone doesn't steal my hardware.

"Happy HAM" here. I only point that out cause we do exist and talk to each other but hate the Sad HAMs too. Being such I have used radios in the KHz range - GHz and you are spot on. This actually goes for all of them WITHOUT skip. If you can see it, you can talk to it. I will point out that your "see it" is a great rule of thumb for lower wattage and higher freqs. If you are on a mountain on say 2 meter (144ish MHz) really the only thing that stops you talking to Mars is getting out of the atmosphere and that there isn't anyone there to receive you. Between two points on Earth that aren't blocked by a land features the only real problem is what is in the air between them be it humidity or interference. Hence why with 23w of power the Voyager probe was able to talk to use from beyond our solar system! 23w of power, line of sight, with NO weather conditions is enough to make contact 12 billion miles away! So regardless of what the dingleberries pop up and say, YES it is IS possible (under good, clear conditions) to talk across an entire state if you are both high enough. What is crazy is how the Happy HAMs seem to do this all the fuckin time but the Sad HAMs seem to never do it! I guess living in your mother's basement and never getting laid you entire life makes sad hams forget it happened 2 minutes after you sign off.

Using the UV5R the VHF almost always seems to get the best range over UHF. I do love my GMRS radios, even though here in Canada they are limited to 2 watts and no repeaters.

I paid extra so my watts are bigger than other radio's watts. ;-) Seriously though, according to an online horizon distance calculator, to extend your visible horizon out past 69 miles only takes about a 4000 ft relative elevation gain. It is very believable that the repeater would be at least that far above the surrounding landscape.

Good morning Note, thank you for your excellent video tutorials. I am new to the GMRS Community, I already have my license and thanks to you I bought a Baofen UV-5R GMRS version. I have a pretty good command of the radio. We're in Florida, I'm in Deerfield Beach and he's in West Palm Beach. We would like to speak in simplex without the use of a repeater. Would that amplifier that you demonstrated B-Tech U-25 help us with an external antenna? or what equipment you recommend to set up a base.

I just got my GMRS license & ordered a couple handhelds. I plan to hook up a mobile one eventually. Honestly I'd just love to be able to talk to family that is about 15/20 miles away. Mostly highway. We unfortunately don't have a single repeater in our area & live in an apartment so not able to actually set up a repeater myself. But looking forward to trying out the distance.
