Why has this never been done?! How far is the distance from the take off to the landing? BUT WAIT! For those of you who bring up the point that we are traveling forward as well, so we are going farther than just the distance from wake to wake, I realize this but didn't think about it until after editing. That can be in the next edit when we figure out "How far are we really traveling when jumping on our wakeboard?" Thanks for stoppin by and feel free to put your questions or comments below.
Enjoy your ride! ✌️ -Shaun

Hey Shaun, I love the video. Wanted to point out that because the boat is moving you are jumping wake to wake at an angle, and the distance is a little farther when you increase speed (measuring about the same 1s-1.3s of airtime). Using 1s the boat travels 29.33 feet in that second at 20 mph and at 22 mph it travels 32.27 feet. On the horizontal distance traveled that puts it much closer to your estimate at 39.86 feet at 20 or 42 ft at 22mph. So you can both be right I think .

YES!!! I knew someone would come in with this and you did it pretty quickly Jeff! Wasn't until I was editing that I started processing forward movement and thinking about how we are traveling more than the wake to wake distance. I actually mention this in the description of the video but I love the fact that you have the actual numbers! Thanks Jeff!

Doesn't hang time play a factor? For instance if you just skip across the wakes as low as possible won't you go less far than if you hang it out there with height with more time in the air being pulled forward by the boat (but landing on the downside of the wake). Would love to see a video where you truly track distance jumped from take off point on the water to true landing point down the lake. JB did a high jump, but we need a long jump video!!
@rob2999
@rob2999 Жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff - At 1 second of hang time, 21 mph and a diagonal travel distance of 41' the rider speed is 28 mph. What do you think of that Jeff? Not sure hang time is an accurate way to calculate rider speed across the wake, because height and hang time can vary from a little to a lot depending on wake height and rider pop. Can you figure a good way to calculate rider speed when airing? At a given boat speed, say 21mph and rope length say 65, Rusty cutting and airing across the wake will be travelling at a different speed over ground than me airing across the wake.

All good banter on here. What we were going for was the distance from wake to wake. I think another edit on "how far are we really traveling" could be interesting as well.

Awesome! I've always wondered this and want to see different boats compared to see how much it actually varies when people say xyz boat has a "wide" wake vs. a "narrow" one. Overall, your boat speeds seem a little slow for those lines lengths which I guess explains why the pros get so much hang time! My friends and I ride ~22-24mph at 70 probably because our technique isn't good enough for stuff like switch TS spins with a 27 ft wide wake. I'd guess behind my boat (old 210 vs. your new G23) at my speed/rope it's closer to 20 ft w2w. Will have to measure next summer.

Hey Shaun! This really blew my mind! I have been riding at 65 feet for the longest time. The few times I've tried 70' we didn't bump up the speed but now I can't wait to go out and try going a bit faster with the longer rope. Can you tell me what the name of your flip at 9:44 is? It's the only inverted trick i've been able to land and I'm not sure what it's called. Thanks for all the fun, entertaining and informative content!

1.25 seconds of airtime at 22.5mph takes you forward 41.25 feet. 27 feet across means you jumped a diagonal distance of roughly 49.3 feet.🤓📐 further than I would have guessed. nice video!

Cool and interesting vIdeo. Changing ballast levels really should have extremely minimal to no effect on wake widths in an application like this. Boat speed and line length are the real variables.
@Shaun.Murray
@Shaun.Murray Жыл бұрын
Reason we thought ballast would change is bc the wake size/shape changes with the weight, to the point where you have to go faster than you would without the weight. Just our thinking

its wakeboarding science! Cool! So do all pro wakeboarders like a 27' wake or do they prefer different speed/rope length combo's? Wonder if other boats are different?

Would have to assume boats are different especially when adding weight. Tower placement can have something to do with it as well potentially

Very interesting… Reminds me some of the old boat tests that they used to do comparing wake sizes etc. To help people choose a boat. Am I bitter that I guessed 26.5 feet and Rusty beat me by 6 inches? ( That’s only eleventy-twelve millimeters in metric Rusty) perhaps! But Shaun guessed 40 feet: which makes sense, because he always thinks that things are taller than they really are.🤔😉 And Rustys guess makes sense as well because coincidentally that is the exact distance between his knees when he is wakeboarding …27 feet. Ok maybe Im a little bitter about losing! 🤣🤣🤣🤣Well done boys!👏🏻

would be interesting to see the wake size (height) with 19/20/21/22/23 mph. if you can vary line length with speed change to maintain wake width, what ballast increase is needed to maintain wake height from 19/20/21/22 ??? Woot Woot!!!!

I’m surprised you never used a Trace or WOO device to track your riding! They both used accelerometers to record everything from speed/height/air time/distance, and even impact force. The WOO even converted the board rotation data to record what trick was performed….too bad they stopped supporting wakeboarding and are only supporting kiteboarding these days.

Ok so let's think about this, you kept changing the speed and the ballast to get the perfect feel on the wake, thus Rusty's pre-jumps to test if the speed felt right. So really the conclusion to this whole thing is, da da da. 27 feet is the optimal wake width that you are comfortable with so every change you made to speed or ballast was to make the wake this optimal 27 feet. If you changed any one of the parameters whether it be speed or weight then there would be a difference in width. This is when you ride behind other boats that have a wider wake then you adjust one of these elements to make it feel comfortable to you and it prob is that magic 27 foot number.
@Shaun.Murray
@Shaun.Murray Жыл бұрын
Good points Shane. And I also think that everyone has their preference as to what feels good for them. When Rusty said it felt a little fast, I totally agreed but some people may wanna go faster or vice versa.

@@Shaun.Murray true and I wonder for those people does the wake them begin to fluctuate. Take me earlier this summer, I was fighting the perfect pass staying at the right speed when I first got my boat. I cut in for a comfortable wake jump but he speed dropped and I cased the wake hurting my ankle. So one of the perimeters changed, did that change the wake width or did it change my speed to the wake thus not going as far. If you ask me the width changed but how can I be sure.

So the principal is still more ballast, more rope, length, more speed equals a bigger ramp, and more time in the air. It would be awesome to see statistics on ramp size change with ballast and speed, then air time with those same changes. I think we all assume we know the results. If I find out, I can ride a slower speed with a bigger ramp, and more air time then that makes the falls less painful.
