Coast redwoods need very specific conditions to thrive, namely moderate temperatures and a lot of fog in the summer and a lot of rain in the winter. Tampa would probably be too hot for a coast redwood to survive. Giant sequoia would also struggle. The redwoods native to California need goldilocks conditions to grow and reproduce. If you want to grow a redwood in Florida, you'd probably have better luck with a dawn redwood. Dawn redwoods look a lot like a bald cypress tree. At that point, you might as well just plant a bald cypress. They are at least native to Florida and have the adaptations necessary to survive and thrive in that climate.

I am currently growing 9 giant sequoias, 3 coastal redwoods, and 4 dawn redwoods to plant on my ranch in Brenham, Texas. I am not sure how well they will do but it will be a fun experiment. My biggest concern will be getting the trees propper water in the sanely/loamy soil early in their life until they reach the water table (~10’ deep).

Plant the sequoias at the end of summer ASAP after heat breaks. Summers down south are brutal and those roots need to get as deep as possible before the heat blisters them. The others will grow without problem there tho. My dawn redwood has grown about 6 feet with another 3 months to grow still. I just planted the coastal redwood at my aunts house and its grown 5 ft this year in its pot. No issues at all with these two, but the sequoias started dying outside in the summer heat so I moved them inside. The trick is to let their roots get deep because they dont like the heat much. They can handle the cold just fine tho.

@arboristBlairGlenn 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Ricardo, If this is true that you are dying, (sorry, just lost a daughter to Leukemia myself), and you truly do want your ashes to be converted into a tree, Here is my advice. First off, ashes alone are not what a tree needs but can be a good part of the compost that you add to the soil. Be very careful with fertilizer as too much will burn roots on a young tree. Choice. A Coast Redwood or a Giant Sequoia can be a good choice but be very careful of where you get planted. Often Redwoods are planted out of their native habitat and there is a serious trunk canker disease that takes out these trees. In the right type of climate for a Redwood tree, at the right elevation, with a good coastal fog and adequate rainfall, this can be an amazing tree. What does " pretty soon" mean?

An oak tree was blown to a 45 degree angle over my father in laws house during a storm one year. It was as bigger than that larger redwood. When it was cut, my ring count showed it to be about 37 years old. there were rings as thick as 1-1/2". A similar sized oak that blew over on my property during the same storm looked to be about 90-100 years old. I think the younger tree tapped into a spring for water, because the growth rings got much larger when the tree was about 12".

Fastest growing tree I have is an ornamental willow, outgrows everything even Leylandii. Planted a Dawn Redwood yesterday to give it some competition :) At 62 years old I am planting trees to outlive me on abandoned land, but I want to live long enough to see them get a substantial start., got a couple of Douglas firs too. I originally planted 7 of them but only two survived the recent flooding of the land where I planted them. Got some Spruce and Picea Glauca too, but slow growing varieties, oh and loads of Chamycyparis as hedging plants.

Coventry UK. I just got a Giant Sequoia to join the Dawn redwood, and am looking for a Coastal redwood to have a matching set. The Giant Sequoia is about half the height of the Dawn Redwood, which is a little over 1.5 metres I guess. I am now going to watch them to see which reaches the height of my shed first. Willow is fast growing but short lived, but thrives in my wet soil, one of the reasons I have planted so much is to dry the land out some.

Well since then I have aquired a coastal redwood, in fact I now have three of them. The dawn redwood proves to be the fastest growing. I have a deodar that has outgrown my sequoia (I have four sequoia now and three deodars) and a cunninghamia that is almost as tall. I now also have a lot more douglas firs than when I posted and they grow at various rates. As for the willows, they are still the fastest growing of all and now I have a regular little forest of them.

I live in austria and I love redwoods so much. I have planted all 3 remaining species in my yard, though seeing videos like this, I can't help but feel that I might have made a mistake. My giant sequoia grows about 9 meters (~29 ft) from the house and it grows with a lot of vigor each summer. It's about 6 years old now and stands at about 5 meters (~16 ft) tall. Looking at it truly brings me joy, but before I would no longer be able to fell it down myself, I'd probably be forced to remove it. I still have quite a few years left, before I might have to make such a decision though.

Hey those are some amazing trees! do you have an update video of them? Is it safe to plant such big trees so near your house? The reason i'm asking is I planted a ceiba pentandra or kapok tree in México City (where I live) 14 feet away from my house. Its a tropical tree that can get really tall, they are know to endure harsh weather typical of the Amazonian rainforest. Its growing really fast 13 feet per year! This video makes me realize that big trees can coexist without wrecking the house.

Take a tree out of it’s native environment and growth can go both ways. Very slow or way too fast. A Redwood grows in a grove with very little light getting through the upper canopy. They are supposed to grow slowly and grow tall and thin at first. Put a redwood in an urban environment with full sun and irrigation, you end up with an inferior monster tree. The urban Redwoods are in trouble. The native Redwoods are fine.

Right tree, right location, right climate, proper root development. I planted about 35 Redwoods at a memorial plot in the mountains (30 years ago). They were root bound five gallon pots donated by a nursery who wanted to just get rid of them. After 30 years, 12 are still alive but only 4 are of any size. Biggest tree is now only about 25’. At that same time, I also planted a tiny one gallon pot redwood only 8 inches tall. That tree is 60’ feet tall today. It was not root bound. None of the trees received any additional irrigation. All naturalized. Many of the trees that were lost died from fallen limbs or deer rubbing antlers on them. I go up there every couple of months and seeing this forest change has taught me a lot. We learn from what we observe.

Coast redwood grows a meter a year average, and soil and nutrient quality dictate rate of growth. After 20 years or so, they divert effort to growing wider than growing taller. The "Hyperion" specimen is 378 feet high and 600 years old meaning it grew about half a meter a year.

ANTHONY GUARINO trees that are adapted to a particular elevation and climate, often grow unnaturally when Planted in an urban location.

We need to stop the logging of the redwoods. It really is a limited species that needs to recover for a few centuries without “us”!

You could try but try they don’t really like growing in the tropics it’s not the best environment for them they need to rest in the winter where the temperatures drop.

In height yes but trunk diameter grows really big! I know a 65 year old Redwood with an 8 foot diameter base! At 4 feet above grade it is still 7 feet across but only 65 years old. To contrast this, I took down a mountain redwood that was only 20 inches diameter but over 100 years old.

arboristBlairGlenn Yes there appears to be a lot of variance on how fast and tall redwoods grow. Obviously part of this is environment, but even give the same location two specimens seem to exhibit different growth rates, most likely genetics? Do redwoods have natural 'varieties' or variation within the species?

Which means we cant properly determine the age of any tree like people try to

Understanding is key. In the wild, they grow slowly. So aging a native tree is very different than looking at a rapid growing redwood. In a wet environment, they can grow way too fast!
