How fast is SwissMicro's DM32?

I show two testruns between the DM32 and the famous DM42. The result is that both of them play in the same ballpark. I'd say they're par. But others say other things, you might want to read this thread:
forum.swissmic...
By the way, at the time being the DM32 does not have implemented the fast mode into which the DM42 switches when on a power line! The great news is, that the developers at SwissMicros have exactly this in mind, it is planned to implement this function in the near future, and this will speed up the DM32 even more as soon as it works on USB power!
Here's the program to compute the Collatz sequence:
LBL C
ENTER
ENTER
STO A
RCL A
2
÷
FP - see hint below -
2
x
X=0?
GTO D
GTO E
LBL D
RCL A
2
÷
PSE
STO A
1
X-Y - swap x and y -
X≤Y?
GTO F
GTO C
LBL E
RCL A
3
x
1
+
PSE
STO A
GTO C
LBL F
RCL A
Remarks:
1. The FP function is in the PARTS menu.
2. I must not use angled brackets here, see the X-Y swap command.

In the Collatz sequence you are actually only measuring the pause time (PSE). Without PSE, on my calculator, it's running in less than a second. You need another algorithm to see if one is faster than the other.

That's right but as far as I remember this has been already discussed in the comments. Nevertheless, I should have noticed that. My fault. I believe I thought something like PSE == PSE, but that's for sure not necessarily true between different calculators.

It makes no sense to use programs with embedded PSE instructions for benchmarking, especially when the time for PSE completely dominates the time used for normal instructions. Otherwise nice video!

Sorry about my naive question, but what's the purpose of the DM42 and DM32? I thought the 42 can do everything that 32 does, so, why to have both?

I must say sorry, too, because I'm on tour and do not have great Internet access each day. This delayed my answer significantly. - Well, your question isn't naive, it's only rational. You ask for a true reason from a practical aspect, but there is none. What Swissmicros did was to develop a new hardware platform, and the first project they sat upon it was the DM32. One may like it or not, I'd rather have seen a new DM42 version on the new hardware but this doesn't seem to come. So, one irrational reason to buy a DM32 may be the new hardware, just to have the best hw platform. On the other hand, the DM32 is an interesting concept, as well as seen from the HP aspect when it came to market as now in the form of virtual calculators on the SM platform. But there is no rationale to buy them both, you may even wonder if there's a true rationale to buy a pocket calculator in 2024 at all. It's a matter of fascination, a matter of personal recollections, a matter of how you see the world as a whole if you will :)

Thank you for the excellent video. Question: If you could only afford 1, which of these two would you purchase? The DM32, or DM42? (My background: At one time I had a 28C, 28S, and 32S, but those are gone. Currently I own 48GX and HP Prime.)

I'd recommend the DM42, and that particularly for one reason: You can easily put glorious alternative software on it. If you're on the RPN-side, try out the C47, and if you're on the RPL-side try out the DB48X. No other Swissmicros calculator offers so many third-party options as the DM42. There are even people who use it as it comes from the factory :)

@@N.A._McBee So the DM32 is not flashable? Wow. Thanks. I thought they all were.
@N.A._McBee

@@Quidisi That's a misunderstanding! The DM32 can be flashed! But it has a new version of DMCP (the underlying OS so to speak) which is not popular in the developer community. This may be due to a lack of documentation, I'm not sure. But in principle, 3rd party projects on the DM32 hardware were and are possible, but the C47 and the DB48X are definitely only available for the older DMCP version on the older hardware.

@@N.A._McBee Thank you! This information was very helpful in clearing up my confusion.

One clarification, the DB48x on the DM32 is called DB50x. So it is available. One consideration when selecting: the DM42 processor is slower and I believe the memory is also smaller. If you want to run third party firmware the DB32 would be more “future proof”. Just my two cents.

Well, just out of curiosity checked Free42 on Iphone15 for integration test LLIM=-20, ULIM=20, ACC=0.001, e^(x^3), dx. It's like instant or something towards 0.1s, whereas for ACC=1E-11 it takes like 0.3 - 0.4sec, and for insane ACC=1E-34 it took 11.5sec...
