Best Tip When Viewing Vids About Japan: Take them with a grain of salt and remember that MANY people make things appear far more than what they are. Also, the only consistent place I see the regular occurrence of foreigners being rejected is with housing. Now that is fact.
@sboinkthelegday3892
@sboinkthelegday3892 Ай бұрын
Japanese people just have a whisper network, they don't even realize they get a good apartment because a friend of a friend knows your mom. And additionally a lot of people get funnelled into poor regions the same way as into classrooms, they're just so good that you don't realize they're The Projects. Which bring us to the supposed "racism" in USA. Everything you don't get you're jealous of, and everything you do get, you take for granted. That's why people resent the pretty decent and lax acquisition of HOMES in USA. Neighborhoods are bad because neighbors are bad. Somehow people turn the tougher chances of finding a Japanese home, into THEM being selectively helpful to each other. When Japanese do to each other the same thing that "only" happens to blacks. Except firearms death.

I have been on vacation in Japan for the past month and visited Sapporo, Hakodate, Utsunomiya, Sendai, Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka with a group of 10 people and we have had zero issues trying to eat, travel, purchase or stay anywhere. Up north we saw virtually no foreigners and the people living there were extremely nice to us and very accommodating. Strange enough we saw the most foreigners in Kyoto and Osaka but still ran into zero issues with any shops or people. Overall it was an amazing experience.

@Gouka07
@Gouka07 Ай бұрын
I can only speak for my own experience, but I saw this a lot while I was in Japan as a foreigner. There weren’t actual signs, but there was a general refusal to serve or sell to foreigners. The shop/restaurant owners would bow and smile and apologize that they don’t take credit cards (which was a lie), then they would say their register is broken so they couldn’t take cash (which was a lie), and all the while they’re slowly stepping forward and bowing and ushering you out of the door. I agree it’s not a thing in the bigger cities like Tokyo, but when you get out into smaller towns there is a general dislike of foreigners, particularly among the middle-aged and older. At the end of the day there’s nothing you can do. Whether good or bad, they have their reasons for thinking this way and they make their own culture. But it’s definitely not rare.

Hanae bro, whose rightful manners do we follow? The customer, or the seller? The guest, or the host? Do we bow, shakes, or bump fist? Maybe we should all just stay home, behind our screens to not offend anyone. There seems to be a lot of that in Japan. That must be the best custom to have.

If it's written in English, it can't be very informative and succinct. This language is actively formulated to lack a lot of concepts and be overtly idiomatic, like you often hear people mock the term "compassion for oneself" in buddhism. But the reason you have to say it like that, is because English conjugation would be "impassion" and basically means the total opposite, so there's absolutely no room to find any conjugation that won't get the American reaction "lol that makes no sense, so you CAN'T know what YOU are talking about". Recently somebody commented that literally "ikigai" can't be a concept, because it just means "reason of living". Not even "Raison d'etre", that USA has had to steal that cultural concept BEFORE to think "reason of living" is anything but food in your belly and blood in your veins. And Boy and Heron is literally about that conept, which clearly shows why such culture has to be created in Japan, and not in USA, where you don't have langauge. The last you saw of that was Taxi Driver ripping off Le Samourai. You do this CONSTANTLY even with basic concepts, like "pom" is literally a nonsense obscenity law disticntion, while jaapnese draw all the way from greek "eros" to describe it. "Romance" is just jingoist reduction of ALL Romance langauge content, into French kisses and erotica for women. Not Romance of the Three Kingdoms, THAt to you is a funny pun. "Anime" can't be mentioned in Japan, because it ALREADY is just a word that means every cartoon from Spongebob to Crayon-Shin-chan. You could say that is a concept "miising " form Japan, but there IS no such difference, you have ADDITIONAL concepts when you refuse to credit TMNT 1987 as "anime" when it's animated by TOEI. If a Japanese person asks why is THIS one "anime " and THAT one "cartoon", your only real answer is segregation, so that only directors would be credited but not underpaid TOEI animators. Akira Kurosawa came up with everything about Cowboys and high noon sword duels, which were lazily copypasted to some vagrant farmers from American settler history. It'sa direct conversion of The seven Saumrai into "how can we make NOBLE CLASS RONIN in Americans", and you picked up cowherds, with none of the connotation of lost status and redemption, which is a classic theme from chivalry. In USA you just wash all that subtext away and into the Smith & Wesson Man who owns a gun.

@@sboinkthelegday3892 Is that why nearly every language needs to use English for some words and descriptors? Anyways, Anime is a Japanese abbreviation of animation. The actual modern definition is "animation originating from Japan" or "a style of Japanese film and television animation". The word Anime refers specifically to Japanese animation.

@@sboinkthelegday3892 In post-WWII Japan, at a time when his homeland was being occupied by the United States, Kurosawa chose to look toward and embrace certain Western ideologies of filmmaking. He used Shakespeare and American pulp novels as source material and embraced Hollywood narrative styles and filmmaking techniques. In turn, his works inspired some of the great works of western film. Another major influence on Kurosawa was his elder brother, Heigo, who was addicted to the novels of Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Maksim Gorky. Additionally, he introduced Akira to Western art and the auteur cinema of Fritz Lang, John Ford, Vsevolod Pudovkin, and Sergei Eisenstein. From Dostoyevsky, Kurosawa inherited the concept of redemption. Gorky was also a significant influence. Kurosawa penned an adaptation of his The Lower Depths, bringing to the screen Gorky’s insights into lowly human behavior born out of evil, cruelty, and poverty. Kurosawa’s early training in Western painting and kendo, both under his father’s supervision, was also instrumental in his creative life. Van Gogh’s and Gauguin’s dense, layered brushstrokes and sensitivities find their glorious way into Kurosawa’s screen images, evident in their composition, outline, and emotional vibrancy.

As some one who actually been to both Tokyo and Kyoto. Unless you’re being a complete dick like some KZfaq streamers. You will be fine. You don’t have to walk on eggshells. As far as locals go. People in Kansai are actually nicer than people in Tokyo. I just think the issue is the Gion District where tourists are disrupting Geisha. Not all foreigners but some foreigners. Most of Kyoto is fine. They see tourists from all over the world. It’s not like they don’t know how tourists behave. Covid happened and some of the locals that don’t rely on tourists for income loved the quiet atmosphere and non crowded transportation. Now that tourism is back and busier than ever due to weak yen. It causes inconvenience for locals. But I think it’s not the locals that are complaining. It’s loud vocal tourists that are complaining about other tourists. Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto are not the only places in Japan. If you hate large crowds. Don’t travel to Japan during peak travel season April, May, August. Go to other cities. My brother’s home town of Fukuyama is a perfect city to stay and you can do day trips to Hiroshima City, Okayama, Kurashiki, Onomichi. Fukuyama also has one of the bigger Japanese Castles in Japan. And it’s right in front of station. It’s far less busy and cheaper than staying at Hiroshima. Way less busy than Osaka or Kyoto

The only place in Tokyo I encountered that didn't want foreigners was one restaurant that came over and asked us to go elsewhere when we stepped in. The reason being they didn't speak English, so didn't want us to feel uncomfortable with any language barriers over the menu or ordering process. I totally understand that! I've worked in retail in areas with people who didn't know English, and yeah, it complicated things a lot! Trying to explain how to use cards or what sales tax is can be difficult if the person doesn't understand the explanation. Fortunately, we had someone on staff who spoke their language. But if not? Yeah, I can see why they wouldn't want shoppers who they can't easily communicate with. Google translate has limits! So we just said sorry and moved on to somewhere else. Mostly, everyone is just happy to have business. It doesn't matter if we're caucasian so long as we're willing to pay. And just like in the USA, they're glad we came and wanted to have whatever the chef felt was his or her best dish! Don't act like an anime character, don't be rowdy or weird, and all is well. A tourist is a tourist and so long as you're there to appreciate and enjoy the culture, they appreciate and enjoy your company!
