Since its development during the First World War, the military gas mask has turned into the modern-day respirator. But what the steps did it take along the way?
The advent of chemical warfare saw the German army deploy chlorine gas against British soldiers at Ypres, killing more than 1,000 troops and injuring over 7,000 others on 22 April 1915.
Since that day the gas mask has become a vital part of military equipment - and is still just as crucial on the battlefield today.

@ForcesNews - as has already been commented below, Iranian Embassy Siege SAS operatives wore the S6 Respirator NOT as you have broadcast in this clip, the S10.

It was the S6 not the S10 during the Iranian Embassy seige.

Exactly the comment I was about to make! 1980 OP NIMROD, 1980 = S6

There's a lot of inaccurate info in this video, such as the S6 being introduced in the 50s when it was actually late 1960s.

As others have stated, there's a lot of inaccuracies in this vid, S6 isn't from the 50's(although maybe it's design started in the very late 50's, maybe someone can confirm, but I suspect 60's) , and S10 wasn't used at the Iranian embassy siege !, it was definitely the S6 that the SAS used at that

Both of my grandfathers served in the US Navy in WWII. Those gas masks have thankfully significantly improved since then. ❤

Indeed. I still have my aunt’s gas mask which was issued to all British citizens back then. It’s frighteningly primitive!

Correcting some incorrect facts that were mentioned during this video: The SAS used the S6 respirator during the Iranian Embassy Siege, they did not use the S10 until the 90s.

This was very informative. However I think I would have a panic attack having to wear these so I have full respect for all military personnel wearing these whilst fighting our enemies.

How do they aim their rifles with those big cheek filters?
@jackrklive4200
@jackrklive4200 8 ай бұрын
you twist the filter as they can lock in opposite of each other that how ever ive also been told you can take the filter off and just use the other filter but breathing becomes slightly harder as only one filter of air passes through instead of two. but it is a great peace of kit.

With the traditional filters they're mounted on the opposite side. With the GSR soldiers did report difficulty using their sights. They're forced to tilt their heads at a rather extreme angle. The company that made the GSR, Scott got the contract for the MoD by selling the mask at a very cheap price...well you get what you pay for. Avon make superior masks

The S6 and S10 respirators were never "comfortable" to wear! That spokesman never had to yomp or dig a slit trench wearing all the kit let alone play a game of football in it(N Instructors Course)!!
